Samsung 4g LTE Hotspot PPTP VPN Problem

Hi all,

Can't get access to PPTP VPN on my SCH-LC11. I enabled VPN passthrough in the SCH-LC11 Firewall, and it still isn't working. Any suggestions?

Oh by the way, using Mac OS X 10.7, and have 5 different VPNs configured that work everywhere else.

I finally found the complete manual on the verizon site: http://support.vzw.com/clc/devices/index.html?p=5636&m=

I logged into to the manager and noticed that VPN is not enabled with the factory setting. You need to log into 192.168.1.1 and activate it. I hope this helps all of you needing this feature.

Just posting to say that I have the same problem (PPTP VPN from Windows7 to our Windows Server worked fine with MiFi but fails to complete the connection now using Samsung LTE hotspot device). This happens regardless of whether the network is LTE or 3G. I haven't yet had a chance to packet trace to see what Verizon is filtering/corrupting in the traffic. Very annoying though because I picked up the LTE device yesterday to replace my broken MiFi, headed off on a business trip today only to find that my VPN no work..

Same problem here as well. VPN connections worked fine on my previous Novatel Mifi. Not happy.

I too am having the same issue. I called Verizon, and they said it is the fault of our VPN. This isn't the case, as I'm able to attach to the VPN from every connection I have tried (LAN or wifi at hotels around the country work fine, as does my home wifi network). But when I connect to my new 4g mifi, I am not able to connect.

The problem is not on our server end, as our server is not even receiving the user and password request. Our IT guy believes Verizon is filtering the information before making it there.

Please, any help would be appreciated.

I also am having the same issues. Verizon is working to provide a static IP solution so that Microsoft VPN will work. Timeline isn't set however.

I did recently purcfhase the Thunderbolt, and I'm using it as a hotspot also. The speeds are the same, and I AM ABLE TO VPN WITH THE THUNDERBOLT, which is mighty strange since both devices behave similarly. They are both hotspots, but the HTC Thunderbolt is not blocking the VPN.

Hope VZW give us a fix soon, since it looks like we all baught this new gimicky device for business use. It's fast, but we need a solution quick, not to mention they need to fix the bugs.

Spoke to customer support last night. There were very helpful but unfortunately there is not definite timeframe for this to get fixed. They are aware of the problem and have been for a while.

They did indicate that static IPs would be avaiable sometime in May. This may help some who can use static IP instead of VPN.

Unfortunately looks like i'll have to send mine back until they have a fix for the VPN. Speed is awesome but I need the VPN.

Back to Sprint.

I realize it doesn't help you, but for others concerned about the Samsung and VPN in general I have successfully ested it with Cisco VPN.

I was using Verizon 3g usb modem with Cisco VPN Client. Then I upgraded to 4G USB modem and the VPN would not work. It would work with WiFi but not on the 4g network.

Contacted Verizon support and Cisco support. Verizon support was no help just said it was a VPN problem. Cisco has a newer VPN Clint called Any Connect. I installed it and it worked.

I don't know if it fixes your problem, but there was a firmware update released today on the Samsung web site. I don't know if Verizon will be pushing it or not.

There is a firmware patch on Samsung's website now for the device. It will reset all your settings to factory default though after applying it.

Thanks. Installed the update but didn't fix the VPN problem. Will get with my network admin to see if he has a possible fix. The Cisco Any Connect might be an option.

Following up to my own post because I figured out what's going on here:

When I "upgraded" to the Samsung LTE device (from a MiFI which had stopped working), I thought I was simply changing the device on my account. It turns out that Verizon forced me to change plans too. The new plan (if you read the small print on your plan docs you'll see this) does not provide a public IP address. It's a NAT'ed service (so in my opinion is not "Internet" connectivity per se). The previous plan did not NAT -- the device was allocated a public , routable address.

Ok, so they force you to use a crappy NAT'ed service, but typically that wouldn't cause trouble (almost all networks are NAT'ed these days internally). The problem comes now that you use the Samsung Hotspot device, which ALSO has NAT. So the connection is now double-NAT'ed. It turns out that PPTP doesn't work in a double-NAT scenario, or at least it won't work unless both the NAT stages have the right pass-through support.

My guess is that the Samsung device does have working PPTP pass-through, but Verizon's NAT does not (perhaps intentionally??).

Anyway, I'm not too happy about this because I never needed LTE. I "upgraded" because my MiFi broke and the store happened to have these Samsung devices in stock (and I needed something for a business trip the next day). If I'd known that I'd be switched to some new plan that made my VPN not work, I wouldn't have made the change.

Really this is the solution - I wouldnt call it a solution if the last line states there is still an issue that needs to be addressed. 4 mouths since this deceive has been out and still no fix.

My corporate VPN does not connect using this device. How can I get connected to my office?

Enable Network Address Translation (NAT) Traversal on your VPN client. We provide 4G LTE customers with a NAT IP address that is internal to the Verizon Wireless network. A NAT IP address is not addressable from the Internet. Some VPN clients must be configured to support NAT Traversal in order to connect to their corporate network. For assistance with your VPN client, please contact your IT administrator.

If you are using a Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) VPN, the Samsung 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot LC11 currently does not support Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) packets used in this configuration. Please contact your IT administrator to configure your connection manager to use Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) or another alternative VPN solution available within your company. Samsung is working to provide a software update for this issue, which is targeted for release this quarter.

Just wanted to update this thread. This problem still is not fixed. No new firmware since April...

I updated firmware to EF07 and test it for a week or so.

Fixed:

- PPTV VPN through

Not fixed:

- Web page randomly stop loading

I still have problem when I am browsing webpages and, randomly, it stops loading and I am stuck with "Sending requiest..." (in Chrome) or "Waiting for.." (in firefox or IE) white black page and/or page just half loading.

This also cause my VPN connection to drop and I have to reconnect the VPN again.

This is my 2nd Samsung device. Will call Verizon and change my SIMS back to use my Pantech Dongle.
