Droid X speech to text.

The speech to text feature on the Droid is abysmal. I have trained the phone to my voice 3 times and it gets worse every time. I have spoken slowly, normally and quickly and none of those techniques work. Is there any plan to improve this "feature" or am I stuck with it? My last phone was an LG Versa and right out of the box I had zero problems with the software understanding what I was saying. Also the Droid speech to text cannot digest more than a few words at the time without telling me there is a server problem. Help!!

You actually just answered you question, the voice application is very accurate but if you are receiving error that it cant connect to sever means you do not have a good 3G connection, the voice application transmit to a Google server and then send back the information translated and if you have a bad or weak connection you will have issues, I use the voice app all the time and I very seldom have to correct the translation... Make sure you have a good connection with 3G and then try the app, it should be better.

I've never had any problems with the voice command features. In fact use it for multiple things.

mossy, "Bother" away. That's the purpose of this forum.

Not sure who your post was directed at, considering another user posted the original question.

Anyone that has spent any measurable amount of time in this forum sees the same thing over and over.

Someone posts a question, concern, complaint, etc. (no doubt the first they've had with their X) and no doubt before that issue they thought their X was the best phone out there. (The number of posts for users are posted under their user name).

Now, they are pisssed. Furious. They want Verizon to "fix it". They want Moto to "fix it". They threaten to return it and buy something else, even a fanboy phone.

Many times, they go into how long they had their previous phone and how it never gave them any problems.

Many times, they disparage the X, Verizon, Moto and the suggestions from those in the forum trying to help.

All of those things don't apply to the OP's post. But, that's the jest of and place where my reply was coming from.

What about the environment you're using the talk to text? When I'm in the car (where I do most of my talk to text), I do need to close the window, turn down the radio (I tend to blast), and turn down the vent fan (I always run it on high). I also don't hold the phone close to my mouth. I do need to speak a bit slower than usual because my normal speech is rather fast. I had an email exchange (seven separate emails) on the way home from work today; there were no errors! (It even picked up "y'all" and "gonna" and I've never trained the phone for my voice.)

I do have one question about talk to text, though...I am able to say "Question Mark" or "Period", and that punctuation is placed correctly. However, I haven't figured out how to capitalize the start each sentence, or people's names. (Saying "Capital A" or "Uppercase A" doesn't work. Any ideas?

I too have used speech to text and almost never have any recognition problems. As a matter of fact, I think it's phenomonal how well it works.

One question though, where do you find the "speech training" on your X?

There is no way to train the voice command, it is a universal applicatrion, the daata base that translate the voice comand is on Googles server and isnt even on the device, so a training process isnt possible on a Android device while using Google Voice Search.

Hmmmm...thought I saw it somewhere, but I guess that explains why I never voice trained.

Mine works well, I use it all the time. Now from time to time I will get unable to connect server. Its my 3g connetion. If someone is sending you a text while you are doing this it may not work. I sometimes kill the app in advanced task killer, restart it and it starts to work again. I suspect a defect of it has not been working well. Factory data reset time.

I don't know where the username Mossy came from unless it is from 2005 when I first joined this forum. Anyhow the way to "train" the voice is Open voice command > press Menu button > click Settings > click Adaptation and go through the training.

Ok maybe I missing something because I am not finding this menu... Now I see a personalize option but its only a check box so I do not get how that could be used to train the app... What am I missing?

Ahhh, okay. Found this in the Voice Commands app. Actually, I haven't had any issues to speak of with the voice commands, but what the hey, I'll run through the adaptation process....

Trying to get past the phone numbers in the process.... :smileyvery-happy:

Yeah, I found it in the "Voice Commands" app.

Open the app and after it realizes that you aren't giving it a command, click the Menu button and select "Settings". There, it starts the adaptation process.

BTW, I was seeing only triangles where your screenshots were supposed to be...

The voice commands app accepts "training" because it uses proper names.

The "speech to text" doesn't need training or at least there's no place on the phone to do it.
