texting to Canada from US with unlimited texting plan

I have a plan with unlimited texting and I want to text a friend who lives in Canada with a Canadian phone carrier. We're both able to send and receive messages from each other, but I want to make sure I'm not being charged anything extra. I can't seem to find a solid answer.

Texting to and from Canadian numbers does not cost you anything additional. My daughter has a friend in Canada and they text back and forth (on our unlimited texting plan). We have had no additional charges from those texts.

May I ask how this is possible that you don't have to have a international plan for texting to someone in Canada

I inquired about texting to Canada and Verizon said I needed a international plan.

I believe CALLING to and from Canada needs an international plan; the texting my daughter has been doing has not resulted in additional charges, the texts have all been included in our unlimited domestic texting.
