Droid Fail x2

3-4 months ago I upgraded from a Blackberry to the Droid 2 to improve my internet connectivity. I've had very little time to play with the new phone, so it's pretty naked as far as apps are concerned (as in 10 apps or less). Two days ago, it started operating independently. It played a game, placed a few calls, had a beer... I called Verizon and the rep wasn't surprised. According to her this is a fairly standard occurrence. The rep was helpful and immediately initiated an order for a replacement phone that would arrive the following day. Score one for Verizon customer service right? Not so fast. The phone that arrived to replace my almost new phone was refurbished and refuses to stay powered on. I'd love to call customer service to complain, but the replacement phone they provided won't stay on long enough to make that call.

Is this just my dumb luck or is it really that hard to produce a functioning Droid 2?

The only problems I've read about so far when someone's phone magically works on its own is when they are using a 3rd party charger.

Sometimes that makes the device register touches in the incorrect areas on the screen.

I've only used the manufacturer's charger.

The "certified used" replacement they sent is even worse than my original phone. At least the other problem was intermittent. The replacement phone has progressed from power cycling when in use to refusing to turn on at all. If I take the battery out I can reset the phone and use it until it powers down (usually 1-4 minutes) and then it becomes completely unresponsive. Black screen and a flashing green indicator light. Power button does nothing. You have to take the battery out to get it to turn on again. How on earth did I end up with a replacement phone that is more jacked than the original!

At this point I don't have high hopes for the "certified" replacement that is due to arrive today.

This bit of information won't help you with your current problem, but I read a thread today, and I tried it, it does work, you don't have to remove the battery to reset the phone, using the physical keyboard you can reset using shift+alt+delete.

Keep sending them back until they send you one that works. I've heard of a few people experiencing similar problems with certified replacements.

If you have a corporate store nearby you might try that route as well.

While they will still need to send you a certified replacement, it does give you a better opportunity to build a relationship with an individual who will at least feel bad when he sees you for the 4th time in a week because they keep sending out replacement phones that don't work :smileyhappy:

I have had my Droid 2 since August and have had no trouble with it at all
