Tethering phone to HP laptop, is it a bad idea?

I have TWC internet and it is pretty expensive, like nearly $40.00 for slow crappy service. If I d/c my internet can I tether the Droid to HP laptop and expect descent speeds, or is this a very bad idea?

 

I have TWC Road runner "basic", and it is like $39.95 a month.  Verizon internet is not available in my area and AT&T  has service with a lower price but the modem is costly and there is a contract.  I don't have many options for internet services where I live, and all the wifi in my building (other apartments) are protected by passwords.

Careful (pvcdroid) ...  you'll get a nasty-gram from VZN.

 

To the point of the OP --  You'll likely never get "similar" speeds that you're used to with DSL by tethering.It's a nice convenience to have it for special situations like when DSL or other Internet service is not available, but YMMV. If you can cost justify it and it actually works for you (in areas or situations where you don't have other internet connectivity), then maybe it's the right solution. But as others point out, it $20/month - minimum.

 

My opinion? I think it's just nickel and diming ... hence why I don't use it.  But hey, try it for a month and see if it works for you.
