Can't wait to get rid of Droid X

Will have had my Droid X one year next month.

In that time it has frozen up probably 100 times. It calls the wrong person 10% of the time, has wrong ringtone 5% of the time, shuts off on it's own (not low battery) 4-5 times per week. Not a great phone. One more year and I'm rid of it and get an Iphone. (not going to pay $400-500 to change before my 2 years are up)

Anyone have similar problems? Solutions?

And you are going to put up with those issues for another year?

Your post brings up many more questions, but since posing those questions makes us look like Verizon and / or Moto shills (so I hear from some participants around here), I'm hesitant to get involved past my initial inquiry.

I've had my droid x for about a year and I have to say your problems all sound like operator errors. As the IT guy at my work, I frequently have to solve people's android phone problems.

We have people with Galaxy S's (Those are a friggin nightmare), some other US Cellular crap android devices,

I have to say, my Droid X has been the most intuitive and best working of the entire bunch, and I have never experienced any of the problems you have encountered.

The incorrect ringtone playing is definitely not user error. It happened on my D2 and it happens periodically on my DX.

Once the ringtones are set, that's it there is nothing else for the user to do, yet sometimes when a contact calls with a custom ringtone a different one rings. It clears it self up later.

A contact's incorrect ringtone did happen to me every great once and a while.

Hasn't happened with the X2 (yet).

Kindly place them in a box and send them to me, I will be very happy to put up with the issues that so many other people have.

I think it's just like cars/trucks. I had an old Chevy Lumina sedan I put 550,000 miles on. It still ran like a champ for me when I gave it to a friend. She put 400 miles on it, lost the muffler, blew out Reverse, and managed to foul 3 of the 6 spark plugs. I'm sure if i had kept it I could have gotten another 100-200k out of it.

And, enough bashing azcat. He was just posting his opinion and I'm ALMOST in agreement, lest the fact that I am unwilling to spend full-price for something else.

Anyone who reads my posts knows how much I have liked this phone and my unmitigated dislike for anything Apple. I have no issues with Verizon. My dissatisfaction is towards Moto. I'm not climbing on a bash train, but I've overlooked a lot of things for too long.

The caveat being that Android apps and their conflicts with the Android O.S. smothered in MotoBlur are probably the largest culprit of issues with the X.

But, if you take away the apps, what's left? A phone with average quality. A camera with the quality of a $99 digital camera. A video recorder that records choppy, albeit HD, video.

The USB-computer interface issues:

This probably ranks second to rebooting in forums as the most frequent issue with the X (Exchange email issues notwithstanding). While my phone has always been a little flaky when connecting it to a computer, it has been intermittent.

Most of the time, there are no issues. About 25% of the time, the computer doesn't recognize the phone when the USB cable is connected (on more than one computer, no less). How do you troubleshoot that, when the issue isn't repeatable?

Rarely, but still an occurrence when connecting with USB is the phone rebooting. Also too rare to troubleshoot.

Falling asleep:

Even before GB, sometimes my phone won't "wake up". Pressing the Power or Home buttons does nothing. And, this might be only seconds after the display timed out and went dark.

The only way to wake up the phone when this happens is to pull the battery. Again, it doesn't happen frequently enough to call it an issue (though I have posted about it). This is something that can be a major problem when you are in a hurry to make a call, send an email, etc.

Video recording:

Maybe one out of ten videos recorded, for whatever reason, are corrupt. You've probably seen it when you are scrolling in the Gallery after recording a video and instead of a thumbnail of a video, there is the gray icon and you get "Cannot Open File Because It Is Corrupt" (paraphrasing).

Sometimes, this even locks up the Gallery until that file is deleted (also reported by others in this forum). Meaning, if you are recording something for work-related reasons, sentimental family events, etc., use a camcorder, not this phone.

Browser force-closing:

This rarely happened before GB. Now, it's a common occurrence. Isn't the browser one of the main phone apps that you verify is compatible with an update before you release it?

And, irony of ironies, while "participating" in the soak on the Moto forum site, the browser was force-closing constantly and repeatedly while on the MOTO SITE.

Random freeze-ups:

Pre and post-GB, and no doubt oft-blamed (and probably rightfully so) as app conflict related; there are the phone freeze-ups.

From removing the phone from the car dock, to opening a random app, to simply just scrolling through homescreens, the phone suddenly freezes. Screen is locked. No touch response.

Most of the time setting it down and letting it sit a minute is all that is required. Other times, a battery pull is required.

This is also intermittent and not something I could call CS about, or even replicate at a Verizon Store.

None of these issues are deal breakers. I haven't even read any of the USB threads, because it happens so infrequently. The rest are nuisances, but exist, nonetheless.

Soft and hard Resets, clearing cache, done them all. This isn't my first X, either. I've had these experiences across all three (two were replaced after the last update).

I'm not bitter about GB. It just nudged me over into the no-longer a Moto fanboy category.

In my unbridled exuberance for this phone I have accepted (and probably even denied to myself) it's flaws. I don't want an iphone and there hasn't been another phone I'd rather have than this one, warts and all.

Seriously doubt my next phone will be a Moto phone, though. The Bionic, or whatever it ends up named, would have to have a proven track record before I would even think about buying it.

With less than a year left before my next upgrade, I concede to keeping the X until then.

I don't get into smartphone conversations, anymore. Can't do it. When someone asks me what phone to buy, I suggest the Thunderbolt and change the subject if asked about my X.

Otherwise, I am going to use the "Emperor's New Clothes" story illustration, again. Time to stop pretending how "great" this phone is.

Folks, this phone is a buggy, glitchy phone. Period.

You can reset, clear cache and reboot in Safe Mode until the cows come home and you simply can't fix what can't be fixed.

This is a great forum and with great people. I have spent hours enjoying learning and sharing.

I'm not complaining. Not picking a fight. Not being an (self-edit).

It it what it is.

Wow ... if I had those issues I also would no longer be much of a fan of this phone ... I guess I'm just lucky or something.

Regarding your USB "issues" ... Prior to GB, I had to enable the Setting for USB DEBUG for my connection to work in MASS MEDIA. I was NEVER able to get consistently connected to transfer files. But after GB, I no longer had to enable DEBUG MODE. It works flawlessley now every time I connect. You might wish to try enabling that option and see if your problem goes away. At last that will be 1 of the issues. Sorry you're having all those issues though.

i don't have to much trouble with my Ringtones an my gmail. ringtone you defiently no when its playing. its the Eurotrip Tone ! Lol :smileyvery-happy:

@droidsw: I wasn't bashing on the OP, my story was simply illustraiting the point that something can work great for one person, and fall to pieces in the hands of another. There is a distinct difference between having a problem then seeking answers and utterly flaming a device.

Just to give you an idea, I have a distant family member who owns every thing Apple. He thinks it's fun to make dummy accounts on these very forums and other Android forums just to flame the device and it's users. I personally don't find the enjoyment in such an activity.

@gerio: I have no doubt that the Lumina failure was the direct result of her operator failure.

Everytime I read post of a user having a number of issues I cant help but be confused because I have had the Droid X from release day and I really havent had any major issues with my device, there was a few hickups here and there from a few apps installed but in a nut shell the device has been a reliable device.... I guess I have been lucky because I havent had my phone call or text the wrong person or experiance unexpected reboots.

I understand that this can be frustrating but there usually there is a explination why issues keep happening to some and not others. I feel you pain but I would say until you can isolate the issue for sure I wouldnt exclude anything, including defective device or operator error...

If you bought the device on release date and got the "New Every Two" at that time you may be able to update one more time with the early renewal plan eventho the plan has been discontinued, on release date the contract that you signed still had the early renewal clauses included and maybe they will still honer this agreement.

Wildman and Gerio, I am taking it as your comments are directed at the OP. I'm not going down that road of "operator error", if that is what you were implying, in response to my post, if you even read it.

In fact, every person I have spoken to that owns an X, or that I strike up conversations with whenever I notice they have one, have all expressed similar experiences.

I'm not saying the thing reboots or freezes constantly. It does do it and the other things I listed way more than it should and way more than I would expect.

Now, having been on your side of the fence (wearing rose colored glasses, i.e. this phone is perfect because it's always been perfect for me), I too was skeptical of OP's coming in here and slamming the phone.

I've had the phone for going on 11 months. It IS a buggy, glitchy device. I know all the troubleshooting steps.

To insinuate that the OP, me, or anyone else has issues has them because of operator error, or lack of troubleshooting is a cop out and a flat refusal to acknowledge the flaws of this phone and you aren't being honest.

Get your heads out of the sand. Wink wink.

I think somewhere you have misunderstood my post because I wasnt directing my post to any spacific person unless noted, I havent in any way stated that the situation was operator error in my recent post, I simply reported that without being able to directly troubleshot and identify the problems reported, that the situation should be viewed with a open mind and understand that device malfuction or user error will always still be a possibility..

Sorry for the misunderstanding but I am focused on assisting the OP not start a conflict...

I've had my phone since launch, and I'm currently approaching 400 apps installed as well as about 12 GB of videos and music on my device.

This past week I have been preparing for a move and I've been streaming music to my bluetooth headphones. I've lost connection a couple of times but it's no big deal and it even turns out it was because of the Slacker Radio app, which they've now updated. There have been a few bluetooth bugs since the GB update but they are simply annoyances to me and I can work around them pretty easily.

On each of my WinMo phones that I owned previously I would have to do a battery pull ATLEAST once a day. Heck, my HTC back cover was on and off so often that I had to buy 3 replacements because the tabs wore off them. Then there was the fact that I had to unplug once the charge said 100%, then plug back in several times and charge for another hour in order to get a true 100% charge.

I won't say the Droid X is 100% perfect, however I will say it is the best phone I have ever owned. Every single other phone I've owned I wanted to take to the shooting range for target practice within 6 months of buying it. I've had my Droid X for nearly 1 year and it's still getting software updates..... That's unheard of for a Smartphone!

crb79, EXACTLY my point. I like the (self edit) thing, too. But it ISN'T perfect. GB ISN'T perfect. And, EVERYONE that has an issue isn't an idiot or too lazy to troubleshoot. I think some in here think that just because they have had great luck, success, whatever, with their X, those that ARE having problems are doing something wrong. It's a COMMON, prevalent theme in this and all phone forums.

I have seen posts of users saying they are on the 5th to 10th DX. I have had mine since March and I have yet to have a problem where I even considered having to take it back. This is my 2nd Android device the first being the Droid 2, which I've also read other users having tons of major issues when I had none.

That implies user error when each device they obtain has the same issues. I just like to point out some of the issues people say they have are not due to user error such as the incorrect ringtones going off.

Some people don't reveal the total number of customizations they have made incuding the R word, which can cause lots of issues once they start deleting files. Not saying that is your case.

Some people have multiple task killers installed, they side load apps that could be malicious and they refuse to believe those things could be the root of their issues.

Apps causing a phone to have issues makes that a GLITCHY phone, because without apps you might as well have a flip phone.

Is Google and the Android O.S. to blame? Moto' s Blur. Verizon's bloat?

Whatever it is, to tell someone that an app is the problem is a cop out unless you expect them not to have any apps.

I've noticed and removed bad apps. We all have. Now, with GB, there are more.

When the same person goes through several phones, sometimes (my router issue) it is not easy to figure out. Hence, Verizon keeps throwing phones at the problem.

Do some people get "new" phones and load the same crap apps into it? Yes. Your other points are true, too.

My friend with a Thunderbolt told me his phone also "falls asleep" and can only be awakened with a battery pull.

What does that imply? Is HE doing something wrong?

Is it an app? Probably. But, here we go again........

my ex-voyager couldn't do pop3 email and was very limited in what it could do on the internet, i'm not a gamer, don't have 200 apps onboard, so i shouldn't have a smart phone?

I must say, I commend you for not instantly personally attacking anyone when opinions differ (many other posters do) and I did not intend my post to be bitter either.

I will say that I do hope your phone's issues get worked out, this phone is really great when working properly!

I personally enjoy my x. Its taken me awhile by searching different forums and taking chances on some tricks and hints that I have found on many forums. This is not a superphone but it is a great smartphone. The hardware is nearly second to none. The issues a few users have can be resolved but it takes time and a willingness to try certain things. Do I have the perfect blend of hardware and os in the palm of my hand? Nah but its pretty darn close. I have a feeling my x will still be serving me well for the remainder of my existing contract.

I pulled this sentence out of your post because I think it is slightly incorrect. You total post was well worded and presented in a well thought out manner. So what I'm about to say shouldn't be taken in any way as disrespectful.

Now when you said "this phone", I assume you were referring to Droid X's in general. Right? Your conclusion was based on your experiences and the other posts on this forum by people relating their experiences with their "X's". I will agree that there are many hundreds of "X" owners with problems. However, looking at the big picture, I'm guessing Verizon has sold many hundreds of thousands or possibly millions of Droid X's, and the vast majority of those are not having any problems. It's a fact that most people that don't have issues with their phones don't seek out these forums and post that information.

Now before I go further, a little analogy. On my street where I live, four people have purchased Chevrolet cars (Not the same make and model but cars built by GM) in the last 2 years. Three of those owners have never had their cars back to the dealer for any reason. (Except normal maintenance like oil changes, etc.) But the 4th owner has had his back to the dealer 5 or 6 times that I know of. A/C not cooling, turn signal not working, not starting, and others. Now, should I learn from this that all GM cars are buggy, glitchy cars? Or, that my one neighbor got a buggy, glitchy car? (Just FYI, the owner with all the problems does have a teenaged son that is allowed to drive the car, just throwin' that out there, haha!)

I have the GB update on my phone and It's worked very well for me. I like it. The big thing I don't like is when making a new text message, I can't pull up my entire contact list from which to select recipients. However this is not a bug or glitch, it was designed that way.

I know this is a minor issue that probably only "bugged" me, but it's a Sunday afternoon here in Hawaii and nothing good on the tube. (Well, technically not a tube anymore..... it's a plasma screen) Haha.

I hope your phone miraculously cures itself or your next phone (handheld computer) works out better. Best of luck,
