160 Character Limit issue

I have an issue with the 160 Character limit. The other companies i have been wiht never had a character limit. I recieved a text message saying that anyone outside of the verizon network would only recieve the first 160 characters. that led me to believe that anyone within the verizon network would recieve all even if it exceeded 160. But when i sent my boyfriend a text it shows up an unreadable mess. Strange letters and symbols. This is frustrating enough that if it wasn't for loving my phone I would be willing to go back to my old carrier.

Does anyone know if there is a feature to change this or can the 160 character limit not be fixed?

You can use a picture message, or MMS (Multi Media Service) and use up to 1000 characters. SMS means SHORT message service - limited to 160 characters. If you have more to say, call or use email.

All carriers have an SMS limit of 160 characters. That's a standard to SMS, not any specific carrier. You only notice this on VZW because some of their phones don't use EMS, Enhanced Message Service, which allows you to text beyond 160 just fine. EMS creates trouble when you're sending messages to another carrier number. Depending on the phone it will either be broken up into several messages, or it will display odd symbols, or it won't even be received at all.

So if you have a lot to say, do as suggested by Suzy, use an MMS to send up to 1,000 characters, or be old fashioned and just call.
