Signal problem with LG Ally. What would be a better phone/brand?

Hi, I have the LG Ally and I live close to an area that won't put up a cell tower. I have to literally sit near my windows in order to get a signal of at least 1 bar. I wanted to know if there are certain brands that carry better signals (or work better far from a cell tower)? Or what phone I could try that might work better? I want a droid/android phone as I access the internet/facebook/email quite often via my phone. Also I would like a phone with navigation/gps as I use that funtion frequently also. If it matters, I plan to buy the phone and extend my contract at Walmart (I'm not due to upgrade my phone til July 2012).

Usually smartphones have worse signal than feature phones. I don't know why, but that's just what I've experienced.

If you are not due to upgrade until July 2012, then you would not be able to buy the phone and extend your contract at Wal-Mart or any other authorized reseller - at least, not without paying the full retail price for the phone. The discounted prices are for those signing a NEW contract or those eligible to upgrade and extend their current contract.
