4G dropping to 3G

I just picked up the Charge on Saturday and I'm having issues with the phone dropping from 4G to 3G. I have to go into Settings > Wireless Networks and toggle from LTE to CDMA and then back to LTE for it to go back to 4G. My phone usually has 3 bars and as long as I keep the phone "active" it doesn't switch. However, if I put the phone down and let it go into standby for more than 5 minutes, when I go to use it, it has switched to 3G and I have to do the toggle setting game to go back to 4G.

There are tons of posts just like yours. Read through the threads. There are no answers that exist either from VZW or any user. Their system and/or the 4G phones (not just the Charge) do not function properly. You may want to consider a 3G only phone. For many of us it's too late for that.'

BTW, consider yourself VERY lucky if that's all that happens. For most of us not only do we lose 4G, but we lose data entirely. I'd be very very happy if I only lost 4G but maintained 3G.

So I would be better off just exchanging it for an Incredible 2?

I would exchange for anything other than a 4G phone. I think all these 4G phones on the VZW 4G network are lousy. If VZW can't get their act together, what's the point of having 4G (and it is fast when it's there) if you can't get data at all many times during a day.

Don't let anyone tell you 'your' phone is defective, they're all like this. I've had two and they're identical in terms of this behavior.

There is a known issue with the phone fluctuating between 3g and 4g. Samsung is working diligently to resolve the issue. If you are with in your 14 day worry free guarantee you do have the option to return the device. Thank you.

I think unfortunately, however, there are several of us that are now outside the 14 window. So basically we are stuck with a phone and service that does not perform as advertised. Is that correct?

No, you certainly are not stuck. We are working with Samsung to resolve this issue so that the phone will work as advertised. I understand this is a frustrating issue and we have escalated this issue to get it resolved as soon as possible.

Does this escalation include the MUCH more significant issue of 'no data connectivity' when, despite showing a strong 3G signal, and despite a 3G only phone right next to you having no data issues, the Charge gets no data? If you read the threads on many of the forums, there are TONS of Charge owners having these issues!

As a novice I ask is it possible that the "radio" for data built into this is just incapable of being corrected to receive proper/stable 3g or 1x? The very very lowspeed 3g issue is huge issue forthose with no 4G yet and for all of us with 4g dropping to 3g that often goes to 1x when one most needs it during the daytime/evening .. on the Samsung Droid Charge

4g goes to 3g all the time but the worst is when 3g drops out especially while typing an email like I was on the new york city bus in gmail... it offered to save as draft like gmail usually does but out did not save what I typed
oops it dropped to no connection then 1x here on west30 & 6th avenue

on this Samsung Charge model it is pretty much a crap shoot but then again I do live in small town Manhattan
do not expect anything with this phone that consistently keeps you connected to the internet without interruption... but like a writing session might just be because of all of the traffic and all of the big buildings! I lived all my life here and I.ve never heard something like that from voicestream tmobile for 10 years!

this phone has been out for more than a year, I find it hard to believe you have been working diligently on this issue, please fix it

I have not had 4 G for months. This phone is terrible but cost too much to change now. I will never get an android again.. freezes alot- terrible

Hey timnyc,

I understand as I am on the other coast and in the San Francisco Bay Area and am often dropped from 4G to 3G all the time and most often when I am trying to use the system to demo a networking feature of the 4G system because I am demonstrating WordPress or some cPanel access where the current wifi access will not allow high security access.

This happens all of the time and I am given excuse after excuse to explain away the fact that they (verizion) can not deliver what they claim, EVER,.

THIS IS OLD AS I TALK TO THE TECH SUPPORT EVERY MONTH ABOUT THIS AND IT IS ALWAYS AFTER I TALK TO THEM THAT THEY SAY HOW SORRY THEY ARE AND THE SYSTEM ISN'T PERFECT BUT PLEASE BEAR WITH US AS WE ARE WORKING TO IMPROVE.

so are you dropping Verizon and if so- what provider do you think might work better. Besides these issues, my email freezes alot and when I call CS they walk me through a factory reset which is a pain in the $^$^. I am so tired of problems.

I can be in the exact same spot and watch my Charge go from 4G to 3G or just plain nothing at all. Come on. The weather is nice outside; there is no reason the phone should drop like that.

Nathang, this happens all the time with my devices and in my area where we get 5 bars which makes no sense at all. When it is on the 4G LTE mode the speed is stellar and then it will switch to 3G within an hour or so. So after pulling slower speeds I reset the device or turn it off and then I get the 4G LTE again, this is something I do in the evenings at least 2 to 3 times, and Heaven forbid I should be streaming something that always makes the process very interesting. The funny thing is I get more bars on the 4G side than I do on the 3G side of the coin. Also it seems to freeze up sometimes when switching to 3G which makes the device unusable and the one device I use frequently has already been replaced by Verizon being I was told it was defective. Also the older the devices get, the worse it gets which adds more intrigue into the equation. It truly does seem that 1+1 does equal 11 in our scenarios where it should equal 2.
