DROID X2 - using punctuation in text is freezing keyboard

Hi! I'm hoping someone can help and am hoping it's an easy fix (though I'm not confident! lol)...

I've had my Droid X2 for about a month now (LOOOOOVE IT!!!). Suddenly when I was texting today, when I hit the period on the keyboard three times, the keyboard froze on the screen. I was able to get out of messaging and navigate through my phone, however, the keyboard was still frozen on the screen.

I would shut off my phone to clear the keyboard from the screen (now I just avoid punctuation - which is not fun! lol). I tried resetting the phone to fix the issue (powered off, removed battery). I also tried updating my roaming capabilities (dialed *228) - hey, you never know! lol Neither of these attempts fixed the issue.

I have the extended warranty so I imagine it's still covered, but I obviously would like to try to avoid replacing the phone. I have considered doing a factory reset, but am hoping to avoid this solution (if possible!) as well.

Any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

In addition to clearing cache, I would also suggest to download a third party app and try texting with that. This well help us narrow if there is something wrong with the default text app. Please repost with results. Thank you.

Try going to Settings -- Applications -- Manage Apps -- Select your texting, and keyboard app and select Clear Cache for both.

I only cleared cache for my 'Multi-touch keyboard' and it seemed to have solved the problem. Thank you so much.

I tried to go in and clear my cache but it already says there's nothing in it, and my keyboard still freezes. I also tried downloading another app for texting and had the same issue. Any other fixes?

Have you tried the CLEAR CACHE proceudre at Power up? or just via the Settings / Applications?

Wiping cache partition

Power off
Power On Holding Home Key
When Andy with Exlamation Point Shows up Press BOTH Volume keys
Use Volume Keys to navigate to "wipe cache partition" and tap power button to select
Wait for it to finish and select reboot system

When does Andy show up? I think I turned that off when I first got the phone so when I powered up my phone it just went to the main screen.

I am having the SAME exact issue. I have tried all steps mentioned on here as well, however the keyboard is still freezing when using the period punctuation mark. Any other suggestions please?

Thanks for all the feedback and assistance to our other members!

What I recommend doing is disabling the word prediction. Go to "Menu>Settings>Language & Keyboard>Multi-touch keyboard>uncheck 'Next Word Prediction'".

Please post here if disabling this feature corrects the issue with the punctuation. A fix for this concern is under review by Motorola. We will communicate additional information as it becomes available.

I'm now having the exact same problem, however when I go to settings to clear my cache, it's grayed out and I cannot. I have downloaded a third party text application and it locked up again. I did change from the multi touch keyboard to swype and the punctuation worked, but unfortunately I'm not savvy enough to use the swype...any other suggestions?

I've had my X2 for 2.5 months and it started doing this exact same thing this morning. My cache shows empty, so I've tried the fixes mentioned, hoping for a fix!

I turned the vibrating keyboard off and my text hasn't locked up since!

Settings

Applications

Manage Applications

Make sure to hit the ALL button

Scroll down to Multi Touch Key Board

CHOOSE CLEAR DATA not CASHE

That suggestion HAS FIXED my problem. I only had a problem when text and hitting the space bar. The space bar would freeze the message. Did not notice any problems with any punctuation keys doing the same.

I am also having the same problem I've only had my x2 for a month or two. Have you found a solution that works? I have tried to clear catch and have used different messaging APS and still having this problem. I love my phone and do not want to have to start over with a new one. If you have found a solution please let me know thanks much!! Kim

Mine started doing this yesterday. Clearing the data under the keyboard app also fixed my problem.

Clearing data was to far for me to go. The problem is your phones learned to many words so to fix u simply go into *settings, *language and keyboard, *multi-touch keyboard, *clear learned words. Worked like a charm!

I recently started having the same issue, too. I use a Droid X. I did the *settings, *language and keyboard, *multi-touch keyboard, *clear learned words as suggested, and that seems to help. If it still happens over the next couple days, I'll report back!

Ya im having the exact same problem! the other guys suggestions work... but then it just happens again :smileysad: should i just go to verizon and ask for a new one or is there a new/better way to fix this stupid problem.

Thanks to all the community members for your input and suggestions. Hobbit, I know how this can be an issue, especially if you constantly use text messages and email like I do. In previous suggestions in this post from us, we suggested clearing the cache. I also wanted to advise to clear the app data for the Multi-touch keyboard cache. I wanted to give you those directions; menu>setting>applications>manage applications>all>find multi touch/multi tap keyboard>force stop/close and also clear cache/data. Also make sure your software is up to date. The most current software should fix any keyboard issues. I have listed a link below to view the benefits of the update and directions.

Additionally, other customers have turned off word prediction to resolve this problem. To turn this functionality off, simply follow these directions; Home screen>menu>settings>language and keyboard>Keyboard settings>word predictions uncheck.

Hobbit, if you take your phone into a corporate Verizon wireless store or call our customer service team from an alternate phone for trouble-shooting, we will do our best to resolve the issue. If we can not resolve the issue and your phone is under the one-years manufacture warranty , and has no physical or water damage we can replace it with a Certified Like New replacement of the same model of phone you have.

Wow, this thread was a godsend. Had my phone for almost a year now and just started having this same problem a few days ago. Was driving me nuts! The keyboard would lock up and drain the battery because it would just keep trying to process. Thankfully the fixes mentioned above seem to have worked! I cleared the data and unchecked all the options in the Multi-touch keyboard. I was starting to worry that my poor phone was getting worn out already!

I began having this problem yesterday after using my Droid X2 for almost a year with no serious issues. it's actually been a great phone.

I thought I would add to the forum that the problem did not start for me until I downloaded the Yahoo IM app. I have no idea if there is any relation, but after the phone performing so nicely for so long, I have to give at least a little consideration to yahoo doing something to cause the problem.
