How to prepare for the update to Gingerbread

What should I do to prepare for the Over The Air (OTA) update?

I will have my battery charged to 101%.

I will backup my Contacts no matter what. It took me to long to get then straightened out!

I will backup my Photos and Videos???

I will backup my Music?

NOW HERE ARE SOME QUESTIONS.

Will all the APPs that I have installed from The Market be deleted???

What else should I backup before the update???

Is there anything else I should do before the backup???

OTA's always make me nervous, I prefer manual updates via the update system on SD card.

The update is the OS, kernal, radio updates. Not apps. unless you request or get the official SHIPPED versions like the leaks have been.

The OTA and SD update should not alter your installed apps and saves, some items are backed up prior to the overwrite, others left in exisistign file folders. However, some apps will require updates when gingerbread is detected.

There is a chance thigns could go wrong, or be bugged, even tho there is a network check system and auto restore prior to the VIA overwrite. If such a thign happens you will need to SHIPPED version or a Verizon tech to do a full over write and shipped restore. It shouldn't happen, but just in case.

Back up contacts to be safe, Goodle shoudl be doign it automatically for you. Then you have the verizon back-up as a secondary- and the sd numbers only as a third back up to sd.

Game saves on the SD won't be altered in that emergency but the app will need to be reinstalled partially. SUch as the MMO liek WOW CHaos........ Online, it won't redownload everything just the launch apk.

I'm going to restart the phone, bump charge the battery a few times making sure it says 100% while it is off, then boot it up wait till the battery full icon pops up, switch to wifi, keep the phone plugged in and download the ota update and after thee phone updates it will reboot but I'm going to reboot again :smileyhappy:

. And of course have stuff backed up.

Thanks Houston. You and Philthedrill have always given good and timely info.

You are both really helpful especially when contrasted with the folks that ask for help and when you answer them they NEVER again log in to see what help was offered or comment if it helped them.

The same goes for the rant and rave folks that rant and then they are never seen again. I have wondered if these folks are really shills.

In preparation for the Gingerdread update so far I have backed up my contacts in two places (Google and Data Pilot 7), my photos, my videos, and today I took a Screen Shot of my two home screens and my four other APP screen pages.

I did the six screen shots just in case I wonder whether or not I still have all the Icons on these six pages that I had before the Gingerbread update. It will be easy to delete them afterwords.

Anything else I should update???

I'm deleting a bunch of apps I never use. I figure the less junk on the phone the less likely it is to have any conflicts or problems. I might actually delete almost all my apps before Tuesday and add them back if I want them after the update.

IT shouldn't over write anything.

Now games and such should be on the sd memory anyway. Incase the launcher file is eared 9shouldn't) but in case you will jsut need to reinstall via markeplace to restore that.

I play Order and Chaos online (best MMO for droid, its def WOW like in your hand and true 3D MMO). Even after a total whipe and reinstall, I only had to redownload and it downloaded a 108mb file to play what was on the SD. COnciderign how big the install is on the SD I am glad.

I read elsewhere that doing a factory reset before updating to GB is a good idea. Not necessary, but better. If I decide to do this, what should I do before initiating the reset? I have contacts synced with Google. I have access to all the apps I have in the market. I use My Backup Pro, backed up to SD card. So I guess after a reset and install of the GB update I can re-download MyBackup Pro and then restore from the backup files. I was also told that doing this backup and restore procedure is not a good idea and that if I am going to go to the trouble of a factory reset, I should just reinstall and configure all apps on the new GB.

What do people think? Is all this worth it? Or should we just do the OTA update and leave everything as it is now on the phone?

It seems that a Manual Update may force a Factory Reset so backup beforehand and be ready before it happens.

Thanks, JerryF, but what I'm wondering about is the OTA, not the manual, update. I'm pretty certain this (OTA) doesn't force a factory reset. I just figured it might make more sense to get the OTA update first and perform the factory reset afterward but only if it's necessary (if the OTA causes issues).

The ota won't cause a factory reset. I would just reboot the phone before you do the update to refresh everything and do it over wifi or 4g, and have a fully charged battery.

:-D I did my update on a battery with about 30% but plugged in to a charger. Doing the update from the pc to sd card method it kept dropping the process saying *low battery* then after a few minutes on the chrager it went through. Seems to work good even with my disregard to battery life. Not saying you should do this but thought I'd share.
