If they are a Verizon wireless customer, the icon next to your sent message will indicate if the message was delivered to their phone. As for whether they opened and read it....no, there is no indicator for that.

If they are on another carrier, you only see that your message was sent. Some phones do have an option for you to receive a delivery receipt....

If their phone was no longer in service, would the text message still go through?

Probably not, you would get a message stating that the phone couldn't be reached or something....
