Screen Backlight

I just got my Droid and I can't figure out why the screen turns off when I receive and/or make a call.  Like when I call my voicemail, the screen goes dark when it connects so that I can't see the keyboard to enter my password.  No key that I've tried will bring the screen back up until the call disconnects.  Help?

So i had this happen on a non-smart once. Rebooting/starting it worked the first time, then I had to take it into to verizon and they had to manually install a software update.. or just reinstalled Im not sure which. But then I never had the problem since.
