Phone heating up since Gingerbread update when "background data" is turned on

I have noticed since the Gingerbread update this past week that my phone heats up excessively and the battery drains very quickly within hours. I tried to figure out why and from what I can tell this happens when the "background data" is turned on. This is a feature listed under "Data Delivery" under "Battery & Data Manager" under Settings.

Why would this happen now?

How can I fix it other than turning this function off?

I'm having this problem, too. Hopefully somebody can help us.

I wasn't aware that there had been any update, but recently my phone has been getting HOT, and for some reason the screen "times out" repeatedly when in the upright position, but not the sideways position where you can slide out the keyboard. Basically it won't stay on, I have to use my phone only sideways with the keyboard out.

I'm very concerned about this, please somebody help us! :smileysad:

Additional info for me: I have the Droid 2 GLOBAL.

I also have the Droid 2 Global. I haven't noticed the phone getting hot, but it keeps going from 3G to 1X so the battery is draining super fast. I fully charged it this morning, and it is now at 30%.

The phone heating up is definitely concerning. Overheating can happen when processor-intensive applications are running. Maps is a good example of this. While the phone will get fairly warm, it should not be hot to the touch. Has anyone noticed if the overheating begins when using a specific application?

Here are some steps to try:

1) Note the application that you're using when this happens. (If it's just random, skip #2)

2) Clear the cache on that application. Settings> Applications> Manage Applications> (May have to choose All at the top)> Select

App> Clear Cache.

3) Touch and hold on a blank spot on a home screen> Motorola Widgets> GPS Toggle. Turn off GPS quickly this way.

4) If you have a live wallpaper, that may cause the device to overheat as well.

5) See if your software is up to date. Settings> About phone> Android Version 2.3.X. If it's still 2.2, go to system updates at the

top.

6) Last resort: Master Reset (Settings> Privacy> Factory Data Reset).

If none of this has worked, please reply back with the following information:

1) Temperature of the battery: Dialer> *#*#4636#*#* > Battery Information> Battery Temperature.

2) Android Version: See step 5.

3) Whether or not you have tried a master reset.

4) If you do have Gingerbread, did it only happen after Gingerbread.

If something above worked, and your phone has stopped overheating, please reply back with what worked. Perhaps it will help someone else or identify a trend.

Hi, Mike, thanks for getting involved!

Okay, on my phone I went directly to your suggestion of seeing what os version I'm on. I am on 2.2. When I go up to check for status updates I'm told that there are none! That seems problematic to me.

I absolutely LOATHE factory resets. I lose everything. I know this sounds really absurd but where will my Angry Birds go?!?!?

Not necessarily. Motorola/Verizon pulled the update until Motorola fixes a problem with encryption mostly effecting MS Exchange and corporate users. So until they decide to release the Gingerbread update again, 2.2 is the latest version available.

I know the factory reset may be cumbersome, however many times it does resolve the issues people have with their phones. While any paid applications will reinstall once you have entered the GMAIL email account through the set up process, any free apps (Angry Birds) are still available in the Market for you to download again.

Also cutienerdgrrl, do you have the original Droid or Droid 2?
