SD card blank or has unsupported filesystem error Help!?!?!

While taking pics yesterday I got a notification that stated "Blank SD card (SD card blank or has unsupported filesystem)". This SD card is in my Motorola Droid X (which I have only had for 8mnths). I am not able to take pics, lost all photos and music that was on my phone.

SanDisk 16gb Micro SD HC

I tried 3 different computers and none of them will recognize the SD card. (with adapter and usb cord)

I have not done a format on the card yet incase there is a chance to recover the missing data.

If you have any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it!

Just had the same thing happen to me today.... Went to Verizon store and when I asked them about it they just said that they were going to overnight a new phone to me... I still haven't been able to get mine to work. Have tried taking battery out and removing the sd card and still did not work. Also tried mounting the sd card in via the phone menu and still did not work. Verizon offered no explanation as to why this happened either....

Try reading the sd card with a separate card reader on a computer. If that works. Copy the contents of the sd card to a folder on the computer. Then format the sd card. Then you can copy the contents back to the sd card. I would suggest that you copy one folder at a time. Then if there is a corrupt file, you will have a better chance of pinpointing it.

Don't expect Verizon to do anything about it. I tried last week on both the 800# and in the corporate store across from work and they both pretty much told me it's not their problem and I was SOL.

best thing you can do is just shell out a little money to get your own card and not deal with VZW about it. They don't care as they consider the card a 'freebie' and will do everything in their power to avoid having to replace it (some stores will actually do the right thing, but very few and far between). Amazing how a card that is worth to Verizon about $5 at the most will have lost them a customer becuase they can't be bothered to replace something that the phone came with, yet they say is Motorola's problem

I understand how important your pictures and videos are to you, as the same is important to me! Thanks Ann154, for your posting. I would definitely recommend following her instructions to see if you can retrieve your data.

I do want to ask, have you been able to get the data backed up to your PC or back on the device? Did the replacement phone fix it for you? Please post back with how it is working for you.

Unfortunately I was not able to recover the photos and music from the corrupted SD card. I tried using several card readers, desktop PC's, laptops, Windows XP, Windows 7, connecting the phone to systems with USB cord. I even downloaded several free data recovery apps. When I ran the recovery programs all of them came back with no data/files found. I still have the card hoping that I come across something that works.

Again, Verizon was not helpful over the phone. THey transferred me to Motorola again no help. Motorola never called me back like they said. I still need to go into an actual Verizon store... They can at least replace my card for me which I was told they would on the phone when I placed my original call for help.

I had a spare 2gb card that I put in the phone and everything works fine now. I noticed since doing a recent system update the phone reboots a lot more then ever. I wonder if this may have had anything to do with it?

I just don't understand HOW this happen while in the middle of taken photos.

I just did another update on my phone. YEAH, guess what just happen? The phone can NOT recognize my SD card.

What is going on?? Are you not suppose to update the phone with the SD card in? Is it typical when doing updates the card is erased?

Grabbing my keys right now and heading into the Verizon store now! Wish me luck!

This is amazing - suddenly all these SD cards are coming up as being bad on Droid X's lately. Mine failed 2 weeks ago and now I'm finding several posts a day about them failing on other cards

I've actually purchased a new SD card on my own (thanks for nothing VZW!) and I noticed Saturday evening when trying to take pictures at a wedding with it, that it wouldn't save the pictures I took. I rebooted the phone and I could take them again (one picture showed some signs of corruption), but less than 24 hrs later the problem came back until I did a reboot. This is exactly what was going on with my phone prior to the original VZW supplied SD card crapped out on me and I'm hoping that I'm not gonna be out $$ for my new SD card to crap out too. I'm really starting to think it is the phone that is causing the cards to go bad. I had the problem show up after the original GB update...it was fine when it was on Froyo. How can I put a brand new PNY 16GB class 10 SD card in my phone and 2 weeks later it is showing signs of potentially being corrupted? yeah I'm sure some of you will say they go bad more often than most think, but 2 cards go bad in the same phone within a months time? Thats not right

this second one hasn't gone bad.....there are just signs that it MIGHT be going bad. I hope it doesn't go back since it's only been in the phone for a week. I may just go in and do a format on it just to be safe and see what happens, and just watch the phone. It's just a shame that such a great phone has so many problems lately

Transferred the SD card to another reader, was not able to read it or format at all, so total loss. Not only that my droid was automatically turning back on when I had conveniently turned it off. this haooened quite random. So I called the Droid support system, the agent indicated that they have not heard of such reports that this is happening...however, they agreed to replace my SD card, so they sent the necessary information. But what bothered me was in order for me to get a replacement SD card, I had to ship it overnight express, so not to damage it...and get this, I had to pay for overnight shipping. at the cost to ship a chip overnight was costing ~$, so I figured what sense did it make to pay that cost to ship that card when I could just go out and buy another one for the same cost. So I did, went out and bought one...my loss.

Months later, (actually yesterday to be exact), 2nd time, happened AGAIN..."SD card blank or has unsupported file system...not able to format, everything wiped out AGAIN, good thing I backed things up on my computer, so now I'm out of another SD card, called the droid/motorola community, once again, they say they have not heard of such thing happening, or maybe I got the wrong agent again. Verizon won't replace it, so no sense in going there. If you goto the store they will probably laugh at you and tell you that you are out of luck, like they did with me. They will tell you that their 'official' policy is that you have to goto Motorola or SanDisk depending upon the card included with the phone. Its a very stupid policy considering the card came with the phone and they'll replace the actual phone if there is a problem, yet not the SD card it came with. Anyway, you're better off just buying a card of your own like I did, although I'm finding some signs of the card I bought as a replacement is potentially headed towards corruption just like the one the phone came with did....I can't voice my true displeasure with VZW without getting my hand slapped by them like I did last night.....anyway good luck getting it resolve

I am having the same problem, although I haven't replaced the SD card yet. Has anyone been able to successfully recover their pictures or other data off the corrupted card?

This just happened to me yesterday! My phone rebooted twice on its own, but this actually happened after the first reboot. I use my phone as a business line so having no SD card makes using the business apps I have installed non-functional at the moment. It slowed down my day considerably yesterday, so not good at all! I also am going to be really upset if I have lost my pics and videos of my son (yeah, I know, I should have backed them up...hindsight is 20/20).

To read on here that others have been told it's not a VZ problem really upsets me. I did not pick this SD card; it came with the phone. To me, that is part of the phone "package" that I purchased. I firmly believe VZ should find a way to help us solve this problem. I am not a super technical person, but it seems like there might be more of a system or network issue causing this, not just random card failure. I wish I could truly believe that the engineer people were looking into this and not brushing it off as a SanDisk issue. If we're talking about quality customer service, then pushing it off as a "not our problem" doesn't seem like the best route for customer satisfaction.

It is also very frustrating to see the various comments on here and in other related topics (i.e.., getting duplicate text messages) and have the VZ people (stores, on the phone) tell you it they don't have any other reported difficulties of this type. It makes it feel like either 1). they are implying you are a **bleep** for being the only one with this problem or 2). VZ is so incompetent that it doesn't even know (or want to admit?) when there are actually reported problems mentioned in different platforms (i.e.., message boards).

Very frustrated with VZ right now, so looking into other options. At this point, even the term fee isn't scaring me away from this prospect...Does VZ even care about losing customers?

I had the same problem. Happened out of the blue; never happened before. I just got off the phone with Motorola support 800-734-5870. Talk about being frustrated....was put on hold, then cut off. Over a half hour overall. Last person I got said they would send me a new SD card, no fee, no questions asked. Shows me they know there is an issue with the hardware. No consolation to losing pictures and the ability to use certain apps.... but for those of you who need an easy way to "back" it up, use dropbox and just put all your pictures in there.

My wife and I both have droid X's we got last December. Everything was fine with our phones until the latest update last month. Both of our phones turn on after we turn them off, both restart on it's own, both have had apps. magically disappear and my droid won't recognize my sd card now. its the one that came with the phone....it just restarted one day and didn't recognize the card. Her's is fine as far as the sd card right now. I almost bet....that the update is what's causing our problems...including the one with the sd card.

Same thing happened to me today - it seems to be happening more and more. I also think it's somehow tied with the GB update, which has been horrible overall. I've pulled the cart out and rebooted, but of course that didn't work. I will give some of these other options a shot.

Same problem just popped up on my DroidX today while in my pocket, not in use, also got the same text 5 times.. Had tried unmount/remount, reformat, Tried on my computer with adapter and also with cord shows SD Card Blank. Lost most of my pics, purchased ringtones, music, no camera function...............Called Motorola....they deny knowledge of a problem. I advised them to read their message boards that they keep telling me to read. Took 4 long holds and and hang ups before I got an oriental speaking rep. I live in AMERICA and I speak ENGLISH.

Last Droid lasted almost a year and they offered me a refurb which forums said were major problems. This time they are mailing me a new card and want me to mail my old one back and I refused. I hope to recover my pictures and other data one day. I had backed up but just not recently.

They could not understand my complaint that they are ripping us off. Everytime a new model comes out the old one suddenly dies. Verizon requires a 2 year contract on a one year phone.

Motorola has demonstrated to me that they do not care about consumer satisfication, so this in my last Motorola phone.

Same thing happing to me! i went to my local verizon and they told me that they will push an update to make it work, well, it been almost four freaking months! seem like i will have to replace the card which is a bull**bleep**

This is clearly related to the last update. All of a sudden all of these cards are blank or unsupported?? I am thinking I will be part of yet another class action lawsuit. Can't anyone just make {word filter avoidance} that works?

Add me to the list. I've had sporadic issues with saving pictures or videos, or having corrupted pics or videos, but nothing major.

Last night - phone was fine.

This morning - SD card "blank or unsupported".

Tried taking battery out and then SD card out - no success.

Got a card reader - it doesn't even see the card. I am truly astounded that this is obviously happening to so many people in such a short period of time, and Verizon is not seeing this as a huge issue.

I am having the same problem, phone was fine this morning, heard a tone, and now BLANK SD CARD! all my pics of my grandkids are gone, backed up recently but not recently enough I guess, and a lot of my apps and ring tones are gone. So frustrated! Seems like it would be a waste of time to call, since I see no one here has gotten any decent answers from Verizon. Has anyone discovered a way to recover the data?

Yep, mine crashed last night, out of the blue. Have tried turning off, removing, replacing, USB on laptop. Nothing! What's up with this Verizon? A little (lotta) help would be much appreciated right about now...

Ultimately, this issue falls on Motorola.

Anyone notice their forums are "unexpectedly down" until next week? Yes, that is apple and oranges, but it makes a statement about what's going on over there.

And Moto, you can advertise on every network broadcasting NFL games and cram those Razr commercials down our throats, but after this Droid X, no way I purchase another one your phones.

MOTO is moving their servers along with a major design change of some sort. They actually documented that this was going to happen and asked for patience while they made the transition to the new forum. They're expecting to have the move completed in the next day or 2.

I read about the forum upgrade and there was no mention of downtime, hence the message, "Well, this was unexpected" (their words) on their forum homepage.

My point, they can't even get that right.

I'll be the last one to defend MOTO (I'm still a bit annoyed that they can't fix the auto-power-up issue). I just recall an MFN email I got that said they "Hoped" (not Promised) to have things up and working within a "couple of days" after shutting it down on Friday.... but of course we all know how that goes .. and obvisouly went... thanks.

I'm having the exact same problem with my SD card.....tried formatting the card when I realized there wasn't any way to recover the pictures on the card...it won't even format.

Add me to the list, too. It just happened to me after an afternoon at the 9/11 Memorial. Fortunately, I have my pictures set to back up automatically. So, with the possible exception of those I took this afternoon, I should be okay.

Hard to believe that with 5 pages of forum notes and complaints from consumers, ALL saying the same thing- that Verizon will not take any accountability for this "glitch." I have tried ALL the remmdies from the other people on this chain and nothing on the phone- it will not let me format the card either.

It is now obvious by reading the posts on this forum that there are bunch of defective SM cards associated with the Droid X - they all seem to be occurring with 1 year old phones. The Verizon store was no help- clerk telling me it is my problem. How can it be my problem if so many people on this forum are stating same thing???- I woke up and out of nowhere my phone read blank SM card/ SD card blank or has unsupported file system. Needless to say I lost ALL my pictures and music., I tried ALL of the remedies listed in the various emails to no avail. Last night I had a lengthy conversation with a Verizon tech on the phone who connected us to Motorola as Verizon still disavowing that this is a big problem with the phones- We spoke with Motorola spoke for a few minutes then then we were mysteriously disconnected. As there are so many of these cases, VERIZON is the one who needs to make good on this. There does not seem to be any accountability from Verizon. I am also considering switching cell company after this contract is up if this is the luke warm, disinterested service Verizon provides. :smileymad:

VERIZON- I WOULD LIKE A RESPONSE. Seems that there is a problem here and this is a $10.00 fix. VZ prefers to lose customers? Or is this such a monopoly that you are afraid of losing customers as you can sell more phones???

Same problem with the "SD card blank or unsupported file system". Got the phone September 2010 which tends to support someones observation that the card is failing after one year. Mine won't reformat or be visible through a USB/PC connection to the phone. Haven't tried a card reader yet. Spoke to Verizon Cust Svc last night. They had me reboot without the card etc. Everything indicating a bad card (of course not warranty). After doing that i got a stream of voicemails that had been accumulating all day because people couldn't reach me. What-the-heck.

I got the same message when I tried to take a picture yesterday. I was afraid to re-format the card because I had 157 pictures which I had not transferred off. Many were of Christmas last month. I took my phone to a Verizon Store and was told the SD card was corrupt and I would need to buy another one. The guy at Verizon tried to recover my pictures but couldn't. He told me to try a different e-reader, when I got home in my PC, and if the computer recognized it to transfer immediately.

I've tried 2 and nothing, I'm just sick over not being able to recover those pictures!

This really is sad to hear about all these sudden SD Card failures. Since the report of the failures starting some time back, I make it a policy to always back up any new pics or files that I can't afford to lose ... I guess it's the only insurance we have - to be pro-active in the event this happens to us. So far so good though for mine - 15 months and counting.

My droid x is 1 year 4 months old.

I got the "SD card blank or has unsupported filesystem error" 2 days ago. I re-booted it several times. I've also hooked the phone to several computers with the USB cord, and tried reading the card with a card adapter to no avail. it does seem that the card itself has failed, but there is no physical damage to it. So i'm not sure wither it is a problem with the card itself, or with the hardware in the phone that "corrupts" the card bad enough that it won"t read in anything. My card only reads "Micro SD HC 16GB" and has the number 2 with a partial circle around it, So I don't know who made it.

Too bad there is no one on here that designs/builds/tests these cards. I'd be curious if they could read the card, or tells us what the damage is.

I have a couple of sd cards that will work in a digital cam or my droid but will not in my PC, unless i connect device thru usb.

The same happened to me a few days ago... NO fix. The MicroSD card is toast. This happened just after checking a voicemail. I think it is Verizon's way of promoting their new Backup program.

manufacturers acknowledged an issue with the card itself. I have had a few

that are not recognized directly pluged into my PC, but thru my Droid or a

digital camera they work thru USB connection to my PC

I tried plugging the card directly into my laptop, and plugging the phone into the USB... no luck. I can't even reformat the card. Toast. I think Verizon is trying to get us signed up on their Backup program.

This just happened to me maybe 2 days ago! All right looks like I get to join the long list of "yup ****ed by another cell phone company"

I am going to "try" one of thier stores this week and hope some how I get help for this issue. Sounds like my pics/vids/music is all gone though. Wonderful! I was not storing those memories for anything special. I mean its just a bunch of random pictures of my daughters first year. Who really wants to remember that sort of stuff...

I have never experianced a cell phone company that actually does the right thing... Verizon will you BE that one company that does?

This just happened to me tonight out of nowhere. I had not even shut my phone off and I noticed the error message at the top of the screen. Verizon "tech support" told me to call SanDisk. I am going to paste the response from SanDisk. Apparently Verizon and Motorola are giving us the run around. It really makes me angry because I lost years of pictures, years of my children's activities. Seems that they just really aren't too concerned about the things that are most important to us.

I am going to try a card reader and see if I can't recover some pics and music. Had wedding and honeymoon pictures on there; don't think I backed anything up. Live and learn I guess.

How about a good old fashioned class action lawsuit for a problem such as large as this?

I have not yet contacted Verizon but after reading this discussion I am already fired up. I CANNOT BELIEVE That this is how Verizon treats their customers!

Congrats Verizon for cheating your customers in more ways than one.

I have a Moto Droid X2. Yesterday my 16GB SanDisk mini-SD card became unusable...poof--music, pictures, everything: gone! Unreadable, unrecoverable, can't be reformatted. Has it been determined if it's a SanDisk or batwing problem? This is the worst Motorola phone I have ever owned. Ridiculously short battery life. Constantly reboots. Destroys the mini-SD card. Makes you want to ditch Android and go iOS (did I just say that out loud?) ;-)

I can tell you for a FACT that this issue is 100% related to the Droid X software update.

PROOF: Verizon reset my phone over the air and updated the O/S as part of the reset. As soon as they updated it, the flash card became a brick!

Fortunately, I just backed up all of the images and videos from the flash card to my PC prior to the reset so I didn't lose any data. I really empathize with those who have lost irreplaceable pictures and videos of family and friends.

What ticks me off the most? Verizon continues to screw over innocent customers (just Google it… this issue is all over the internet) and they won't even acknowledge that they have a serious problem or tell their customers that the update will wipe out all their data and turn the flash card into a brick...never mind about working with Motorola to fix this horrific bug in the Droid X software update.

Ironically rational people know Motorola is the one who pushes the update to Verizon. Verizon does nothing more than add their standard bloat and then push out the update. If Motorola screws up... Well everyone will blame Verizon for it anyway like you.

OK add mine to the list, "SD card blank or has unsupported filesystem" didn't do anything phone was charging off outlet picked it up and notification bar had the icon with warning tried all of the above in this thread, nothing worked. tried http://www.cardrecovery.com/sd-recovery/ didn't work. my concern is my pics, apps and music. i had A LOT of apps. not all from market. and scientist want us to go to mars. yeah right. if the memory wipes for absolutely NO reason, you'll never make it. I don't care WHO's problem it is just fix it! now! or else!

I too had my sd card crash. it won't let me format it or anything. I lost everything. Not happy! add me to the list.

Possibly unrelated, I recently used a MyCharge Portable power bank 1500, the SD card error occurred the following day.

Put me on the list while everyone else is being added...Have had Droid X2 for maybe 10 months. However, have had the SD

card for the several years I have been with Verizon. All of a sudden, 5 days ago, the phone would say "preparing SD card" and then the SD card simply would not mount or I would get an error telling me that the card is damaged. My phone is and has always protected by a durable case, no water damage or exposure to "extreme" temperature. I got the X2 after the prior Droid 2 I had randomly crapped out. But at least then, I had the security of knowing that everything was backed up onto the external SD card that I'd never had any problem with. I did have some of the contents backed up onto my PC but then however, updated the operating system/wiped everything clean. Therefore, I have lost years of photos, videos and quite a bit of music also. Verizon is shipping me a "replacement" phone. Quite franky, it can be made of platinum and diamonds for all I care. Because memories aren't just irreplaceable. I have tried two different card recovery programs with no luck so if there's any random miracle anyone comes upon, post it.

It has now been two i have tried everything lots of pics are gone all my ringtones i do know that i am almost up for a new phone and i will not be getting another droid!!!!!!!! My actual gallery has never worked. I put my phone down sometimes and decides to dial who ever. grrr not been happy with this phone. maybe i will switch to an iphone has anyone had any problems with them?????

I wanted to add this: I am a virgin mobile customer w/ a motorola triumph. This phone os is fixed can never be updated (not the issue). It is droid 2.2.2. Anyways, same issue - RANDOM failure of SD card. Phone can just be sitting by itself for 24 hours and boom, either locks or reboots itself with subsequent sd error. And after months of use, boom, it can reverse itself. But, then, boom, reverse, haha. It is obviously a very expensive fix for google and their partners OR could it be as perverse as an agreed upon technique to get folks to purchase new? Either way, it truly is horrible the way they've danced around it. Next phone is iOS or windows for me.
