two issues with my fascinate

My phone has been doing automatic and random media scans for the past two days. When it does them, it blacks my phone out completely prior to, and I can't do ANYTHING on it for a good 2 minutes. Even once it is done, and I start doing something, it can and does happen again, in the middle of WHATEVER I am doing. I have removed the SD card, removed the battery, put both back in, and it still keeps doing it. I don't know if it is related or not, but my volume control on the side of my phone works, but does not show on-screen that it is adjusting, as it did and always has up until about two days ago. This also causes the black out- anytime I use the volume control button??

My second issue is that I have tried to check for new updates, and it will search for one, for a good minute or two, then it will say "server is unavailable". It has been unavailable for the past two days!

Any help would be appreciated.

Try *228 and do 1and 2 and see if that clears it up. If that doesn't then you can disable your current phone, reactivate an older phone, then deactivate that phone and reactivate the fascinate

I definitely understand why this issue would be frustrating. The phone should normally complete 1 or 2 media scans at startup, and only complete another scan if new music or pictures are adding or SD card is unmounted. This could possibly be an issue with the SD card itself, or a hardware issue in the phone. I would suggest first booting the phone into safe mode to see if this issue still occurs. If it doesn't, it may be an application causing this issue. You will need to try removing any recently installed apps to see if this stops the media scanning. Start first with apps that may be installed to the SD card or that affect pictures, videos or music. If still occurring during safe mode, then I would suggest formatting the memory card. First backup to your memory card, then format thru Settings>SD & Phone Storage.
