Charge Command Keys illimunation

Does anyone know the rhyme or reason as to when the Command Keys will illuminate?  Seems like when I need them to be illuminated, they are not.  I can't figure a pattern to it.

This may not answer your question completely, but there is an ambient light sensor in the upper part of the phone. very near the speaker. If you cover that with your finger for a couple of seconds, you should see the physical keys illuminate and the screen dim slightly...the phone is going into Night Mode.
