Okay, here's yer story...(I posted this elsewhere, BTW)

Gee, it's like no one ever heard of "cookies" (and I don't mean Keebler or SoftBatch).

Anyone doing electronic transactions is doing some form of this. If they claim they don't, they are lying or at least spinning their activities.

Individual privacy died with the invention of the telephone (I remember, as a kid in the days of party lines, some neighbor kid showing us how he listened in on the other parties' conversations and thinking that was twisted). It hasn't gotten any better, it will just get worse. Is it serious? YES. Can we do anything about it? Yes, but we won't. It's gonna take more than a few folks haughtily posturing on an Internet forum (gee, the forum owners can't track us, can they? Please, grow up already) to get anything done. And then, you trust this government to do anything effective that isn't profitable to them?? I'm chuckling now at the thought.

Just face it. We are screwed. In every way imaginable, and not just because, OMG! Phone makers are tracking us. No, an immeasurable percentage of the population cares enough to lift a finger over this. And my faith in humankind says that this ain't gonna change. Go ahead, prove me wrong. No one loves hearing "I told ya so!" more than me, I assure you. I'm not sure what's worse...the fact that this tracking activity is going on or the fact that no one seems to care, past a few folks bloviating on an Internet forum about it. Lots of effort to do that, eh... :smileyvery-happy:

The day I chose this cynical view of things is the day I felt better and quit worrying about it.

Yeah, I know. I really don't mind them collecting network and handset data.

What really fries me is that the Carrier IQ rootkit was written to grab ALL keystrokes. This includes HTTPS protocol that is grabbed and logged before encryption. Now as I understand it, that may be the only way to do this at the rookit level, but that is a true breach of privacy.

VZW claims they don't utilize this softwware, but I'l but there is something similar they use.

Like I said, I could care less about acquisition of useful data, but if you're going to snoop my secured traffic and subvert recognized universal internet protocols, please have the courtesy to tell me in advance. I just might want to change my habits and maybe my handset.

Verizon already has answered this -- They say that their devices don't have Carrier IQ.

Or course...people can/will say, "They're lying!" Could be...

...But AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile have admitted that their devices do have Carrier IQ, and Apple says that their devices do except those running iOS5, so seems like it would be safe for VZW to admit it if true. If VZW was lying they'd look much worse if Carrier IQ was then detected on their devices. And people already have developed tools to detect it.

If/If-not Carrier IQ is discovered on VZW devices then we'll know who is rational and who is paranoid. :smileywink:

I mean, "know" is an absolute -- requiring documentation, not a guess...or paranoid delusion. If you have a link to actual documented evidence of this, please share.

Who is naive enough to think that anything you do on a cellphone isn't tracked?

I know, I know, the Big Brother and privacy issues are important to some people, but our cars "spy" on us (OnStar) and so do our computers.

Getting all riled up over this just doesn't make sense. Doubt anything will change it. Kudos if the outcry helps. Till then, you can always use pay phones, if you can find one.

From what I've heard, it's not just Onstar....

The "black boxes" record a bit of info that the insurance companies and/or law enforcement can use when determining fault and responsibility in auto accidents. And this has been going on for years. I don't think it's quite as simple as I make it sound here, but it has been going on.

I think this is google-able (gee, what a word... :smileyvery-happy: )

I suppose in this instance, the customer is rewarded with the potential of lower rates.

Maybe, if we were similarly compensated by voluntarily letting our phones spy on us, folks wouldn't be rubbed the wrong way. But, that will never happen.

Same here, dude. I went through 3 of them in 5 weeks (and nothing to do with privacy issues) before I gave up, bought a 32gig iPhone for FULL PRICE, and ebayed the last Bionic outta here.

Feeling yer pain? YOU BETCHA.

All of my connectivity issues went away when the iPhone showed up. However, the fellow that bought my last Bionic on EBay is still loving it 6 weeks later. Go friggin' figure...

Back to your point, just in case you didn't get it, a sense of humor and the ability to recognize sarcasm when you see it will help a lot in these, our turbulent times... :smileyvery-happy:
