FINALLY, I did the manual update to Gingerbread 2.3.6 - It went great!

My battery was charged to 98%. I did NOT have the phone plugged into the charger. To do this your Charge phone MUST be running STOCK on Froyo 2.2.1 EE4.

I went here and downloaded this file to my PC: update_EE4B_to_EP4D.zip The file size was 117,613 KB in my PC but after it was copied into the root folder of my phone the file size was 114.9 MB.

Next, in my PC, I changed the name of the file to: update.zip

Then using the USB cable I copied the file update.zip from my PC to my phones SD Card root file. That's where all my other stuff is stored. After you copy it there you should go to the APP My Files to confirm that it is there. The file size is now 114.9 MB.

FINALLY, in my case the screen that came up was a RECOVERY screen. It said recovery at the top. You will see a choice of about five things you can do. On that list of choices I touched UPDATE.ZIP and then I pressed the HOME Button at the bottom of the phone. The update started and the screen that came up had an picture of an open box with an arrow coming out going down toward a Droid. Now we know there is a little Droid doing the download! There also was a BAR showing the progress which was slow at times.

It took all of 15 minutes and then the phone rebooted itself and finally just turned off. The little Droid was probably exhausted! I waited a couple more minutes after the screen went blank (black) and then pressed the power button.. The phone started and it's working very well on Gingerbread 2.3.6.

The photo I included shows my new Gingerbread setup. To see yours go to: Settings>About Phone and then go down the screen to see the new Gingerbread specs.

I got the courage to do this myself, its about 25% done I hope all goes well. In order to get the official update OTA will I have to do anything??

This is supposed to be the OFFICIAL one.

If my phone says that there is an update available I plan on refusing it.

A few folks at XDA developers said that it was the official VZ version for UNrooted phones running on stock Froyo 2.2.1 EE4..

By the way, if you used my set of instructions, were they easy to follow?

Thanks Jerry, I followed your instructions and easily upgraded two phones that are both working perfectly at 2.3.6. At first I was holding back because I wanted to get the correct update but verification later in the thread from a OTA user pushed me to giving it a shot.

I had zero issues with both phones I've upgraded except booting into recovery mode was not clear to me. Holding down all three buttons and the device restarts itself then releasing the power button only put me right into recovery mode after a number of tries.

I have all my contacts, files, emails and apps and I'm working great. Maybe the best thing is I don't have to come back to this site to find out where my update is.

Since this version matches the OTA version exaclty I doubt I will ever be prompted to upgrade as I'm already current.

On my phone I am trying to figure this out because it could be a problem.

When I go to settings>about phone>status and look at battery status it shows the word Discharging whenever the phone is NOT connected to the charger. When we had Froyo 2.2.1 it said Not Charging when it was NOT connected to the charger.

This is ONLY for all you folks that have Gingerbread 2.3.6 installed. Does yours say Discharging when the phone is not connected to the charger??? I ask because it could be a problem but I suspect that this is just the way they said it and there is NO massive discharging.

Technically your battery is discharging when not plugged into a charger.

Yes mine says discharging now with the update.

Can you explain that for me? Thunderbolt has 2.3.4 and Gtalk video is enabled plus most the GB Motorola Droids and ffc is working on Skype now. So why no Gtalk video love in our GB update?

Some phones had it added after they released gb to certain phones....i wish they would add it on the charge, I don't want to use skype to use the ffc, I want to use g talk as it is a native app, I don't want to download bunch of 3rd party apps to make these features work. I hope they add support for it!

I improved my original description and made my explanation on how to do a manual update to Gingerbread 2.3.6 a bit more precise and clear.

This is for the Samsung Charge phone from Verizon. My battery was charged to 98%. I did NOT have the phone plugged into the charger. To do this your Samsung Charge phone you MUST be running STOCK on Froyo 2.2.1 EE4. This update does NOT root your phone.

I went to the URL shown below and downloaded the Gingerbread update file named update_EE4B_to_EP4D.zip to my PC. The file size was 117,613 KB in my PC but after it was copied into the root folder of my Samsung Charge phone the file size was 114.9 MB.

The three buttons are: Volume Up Button, Home Button, and the Power Button. One user gave me the suggestion to Hold Volume Up + Hold Home + Hold Power until you see the Samsung logo, then release the Power button. Finally release the other two buttons (Volume Up + Home) several seconds later.

No. You do NOT need to be ROOTED to do the manual update I described. When you're done the phone is not rooted...it's stock Gingerbread 2.3.6. Same as the OTA update.

Thanks for the instructions - this appears to have worked just as described. One quick question - is there any reason that the update.zip file needs to remain in the root directory once the update has been succesfully installed? Does it need to remain there for future recovery needs, or is it just wasting space?

I just downloaded the file and noticed that it is 114 MB (120,435,571 bytes) and not the size as listed in the first post. Should I download it again or is it fine?

I'm eager to go but waiting for someone else to confirm size or even file hashes for the file they used.

I just tried it and I was able to enter recovery mode and the bar started going across the screen. Once it reached about 1/2 way (3 minutes at most) it chagned screens to the droid and a triangle above it. Didn't seem right so I pressed a button and got the original screen back with some errors so I rebooted and am back to the way it was. So I'm not sure if there is a problem with the file I have or if I should try again. I'm a bit of a chicken now and may just wait for the OTA

Suggestions?

This is completely out of the blue. i did the manual update and everything went very well thanks to jerryf but i was playing around and i couldn't seem to find the update assistant that they said would be in the update. can somebody tell me exactly what this is?

I was referring to the link I provided for video on gtalk. Sorry it fell after your revamped update description. I did already do the update and thanks for the original post it worked great.

You downloaded the wrong file. I noticed a file, probably an ad, on that site that was 114 KB. I almost made that mistake myself but someone on this forum warned me.

The original file you download is 117,613 KB That's why I gave the file size for confirmation that the correct file was downloaded.

Then you change the name to UPDATE.ZIP while it's in your PC. After it's in the phone it is 114.9 MB.

Try it again from scratch. Re-read my updated set of instructions.

That's a good idea! I already tried to update my original post but it's locked so I cannot update it. I wish I could. It seems that you can only modify a post for a very short time after it is posted.

If anyone on this forum can tell me how to update my original post I will do so immediately if not sooner!

Does the manual update do a factory reset on the phone-wipe out all apps etc? I have seen conflicting info

I have done this update and so far I haven't had a signal issue. I didn't reset my phone, didn't lose any data, everything I had on it is still intact and operational ( custom launcher, icons, facebook contacts, etc ). Although I have noticed some features have changed both good and disappointing.

The Good: FFC for skype, bug fixes seem to be helping, general operations seem to be a little smoother, ummm yeah that's it so far that I've found.

The Bad: Still no FFC for Gtalk, back button doesn't wake up phone anymore, color scheme is still ugly if not worse, I'm not digging the changes to the browser, added ugly yellow glow when reaching the end of a scroll, and still looking for more.

I am almost afraid to ask but did you ever get your flash camera problem resolved? I ask because I had such rapport with both you and the frustration you felt because of your flash camera failing. Don't answer this unless you want to.

For all you folks that are hesitating using this manual update consider the following.

1. So many have done it you can see that it is working well.

2. If you're worried about a future update to Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS), by the time Verizon MIGHT release ICS you could root your phone and have it at lease a year before their release.

3. Regarding rooting, again by the time ICS is available from Verizon your warranty will have long before expired.

4. The Charge phone and ICS are NOT even on the Samsung future update list. We MAY have an End of Life phone.

5. By the time your contract is up you may want to buy a new phone. NOTE: With a new phone you can go through this same "fun time" frustration again...JUST KIDDING.

6. Remember, those folks that TAKE CONTROL of a bad situation experience less stress.

No OTA notification here in MD. I am very frustrated and debating on whether to do it manually...

Probably you spoke with a tier one person. I just got off the phone with a tier 2 and they confirmed the OTA is being rolled out. It may take 7-10 days for everyone to get the OTA due to the fact if they release to everyone at the same time, it will saturate the networks and possibly crash the servers. BE PATIENT PEOPLE. Verizon knows what they are doing. If you are so unhappy like all the others, go to AT&T or Sprint, you will have a lot more to complain about there.

It is probably only enabled once a new update is available, I'm guessing it helps ensure OTA's go even smoother or something? But, that is kinda good news for the Charge, maybe that means more updates are on the way?

No...all my contacts, pictures, videos, music, APPs and so forth are the same after the update. They were not deleted.

I did back up my contacts because that are so hard to reconstruct but they were left alone.

My concern with the manual update has nothing to do with whether it's compatible with future updates, or not. It has everything to do with the fact that this was uploaded by J. Random User. What assurances do I have that it hasn't been tampered with, for instance, had a keylogger installed?

Trying this now all is good so far! No one I know here in the Atlanta area has gotten the OTA update as of yet.

Gdcgolf, most likely you won't see the ota notification then. If you do, just accept it then, but that update zip is supposed to be the ota file verizon is pushing out.
