Should we do a Factory Reset and then Gingerbread update???

For those folks that have had a lot of problems with their Samsung Charge phone would it be advisable, to first do a factory reset in order to clean out whatever was ailing the phone, and then do the Gingerbread update?

Someone here must know.

Also, from previous posts it sounds like a manual update is better than Verizon's Over The Air (OTA) update.

This is how I deturnain if a reset is needed, if you have a large amount of apps and customization on the device a hard reset is a good ideal to avoid any conflicting apps causing issues with update but if the device is basically stock and has not been changed you may can go withouta reset..

Another thing to concider if the update is a major OS update a update is wise also but if it is a bug fix update then may not be needed..

Now with all that said because you are doing a major code change when upgrading to GB from Froyo so I suggest you do a hard reset to play safe..

Heard on the forums apparently a person that calls himself (maybe herself, doubt it though) P3droid on twitter, tweeted that the 2.3.6 build of Gingerbread was submitted to VZW. So I'm guessing all that means is their appoval or not to be pushed out OTA. That is of course IF they appove of it. It's been taking forever so I'm not going to believe it until I see it. But that's latest rumor, speculation, opinion or whatever you may call it. Take it as it is.

No official news from samsung or verizon, it will be official once they change the charge support page.

All it means is that Samsung and Verizon are still working on it. There have been at least 3 "official" builds over the past few months and Verizon hasn't released any of them.

Is does sound like something is coming. Nobody knows anything for sure until it happens.

BTW, thank you WILDMAN for your good on-target comment, I just want more opinions. Yours is a very good one.

My appologies JerryF. I was just answering Strike01's question as to any news of the update. Never intended to "hijack" your thread. That's why I said, "take it as it is." To move on. But as to your question, I've heard before that a factory reset before a major update (size depending) is advisable. As for which update is better, manual or OTA wise? I guess I'd have to say that's merely opinion. Mine would be manual. I think I've read somewhere that Samsung advises we should manually install the latest update which they have posted here: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/SCH-I510RAAVZW. It's still only got the 2.2.1 update but I'm sure 2.3.x will be on this link as soon as it's available. This is again all in my opinion as to which update to follow but hope this helps somewhat.

Agreed. Before any major version update, it's a good idea to start from scratch. It may be annoying to have to set up things again but it usually helps in the long run as old app data and system settings can easily get corrupted in an update and cause issues. I'd also download the file on a computer, transfer it over to the phone and do a manual install whenever possible. Seems that OTA pushes tend to have their own issues.

May I answer that question (vide supra), here?

Since I am not sure, I will tell you that my current favorite recipe is:

6 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder
1 tablespoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 cup shortening, melted and cooled slightly
1 cup molasses
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup water
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

p.s. the oracle over at xda-developers appears to be very confident that an official 2.3.6 release is imminent.
