LG Octane - Random Light Up

Hello,

I've had my LG Octane for a few weeks now and a few times during the night I'm woken up because the cell phone lights up. No messages or calls - it just lights up. Of course the stupid thing lights up the entire room. I'm also concerned it does it during the day without my noticing which would not help the battery. Anyone have this issue or know how to fix it? Thanks!

The only thing that comes to mind is some sort of service alert is set, such as signalling when you lose and regain signal. Do you hear any type of sound or beep at the same time? Are you in a weak signal area at home (like I am)?

Open phone, press Menu, 9 (tools & settings), 7 (sounds settings), 6 (service alerts), and see how these are set. I believe ERI is this setting that alerts about signal. As it says in the LG Octone manual (PDF file I keep on desktop of my laptop): ERI Alerts you for the current status of cellular service. ERI stands for "Enhanced Roaming Indicator".

My prior phone -- an LG VX6100,which I replaced with an Octane in the last couple of weeks -- had a small light that lit up red (when losing signal) and green (when it came back) and optionally beeped if had that option turned on (which I usually didn't) .

I never hear a beep when it lights up, but I use my phone only as an alarm clock at night so it is always set for "alarm only". I checked all of my service alerts and they are all "off" so I'm still not sure what the issue is. Thanks for the advice and I'd appreciate more if you think of anything else!

Although it doesn't address the "why" it's lighting up at night, turning the phone over so the screen is DOWN will solve the problem of it waking you up...I always charge my phone facedown, because texts and emails come in overnight and the notifications, although silent, DO light up the screen.

Additionally I would also recommend to modify the backlight setting on your device. You can do this by following these steps:

Menu
Settings and Tools
Display Settings
Backlight
Choose a Backlight submenu: Internal Backlight; External Backlight; Keypad.

You can turn off the internal and/or the external backlight.

Hello Daisy,

While appreciate the response, I don't want to turn off my backlighting. Backlighting is there for a reason because it improve visibility. I like whem my alarm clock goes off and my screen lights up. I don't have people texting or calling in the middle of the night, so my phone randomly lighting up in the middle of the night is the issue. In addition, if I were to get a call, if would probably be an emergency so my phone lighting up would be helpful - the first time my phone lit up in the middle of the night I thought it was an emergency call. So placing my phone face down doesn't fix the issue (it kills battery power anyway) and turning off the backlight isn't going to fix the issue.

Anyway, the most important reason that the backlighting comment isn't helpful is that you can't actually turn off the external backlighting! I just checked. The lowest you can go is 7 seconds, which is ridiculously long, personally. I've reduced the brightness off the external backlighting but it is still very bright. But I just want my phone to stop lighting up - not turn off the backlighting entirely.

Hi Kim -
Do you have backup assistant set to sync at night? That may be causing the screen to light up when it connects.

If it's not a call or a text causing the screen to light up (and it sounds like you do want to leave it so those things DO light it up for you) then that leaves a data event - and backup assistant seems the most likely.
