Should Verizon provide a roll back option from the gingerbread update?

Simple and straightforward. Do you believe That verizon should provide a rollback option from the gingerbread update?

My vote would be Yes.

Here is some reasons why
1 First and foremost the update should not have been forced.
2 When making significant changes to the operating system like gingerbread has Motorola should have the decency to contact Droid owners And inform them of the changes they attend to make.
3 The update wasn't really necessary.
4 ethically I believe that verizon should provide a roll back option.
5 regardless of what the fine print says in the contract just because something is legal to do doesn't mean it is ethical to do.

None of the Android phones on any of the carriers across the world have the ability to rollback to the previous version of the Android operating system.

Ann they do have the ability. Verizon and or Motorola would have to want to do it. It is simply a matter of reprogramming the bootloader rom with the spf image file of froyo. For obvious reasons both Verizon & Motorola reluctant to do this as of yet. Believe me it can be done they just have to choose to do so.

Another point over at the motorola forums a poster has stated that verizon has now made the gingerbread update optional. As in if you have a droid 2 that has not received the update. When you do it will give you an option to decline the update. It's true I only wish verizon had offered me the option. My droid 2 Has been significantly Impaired by the gingerbread change / update.

The Gingerbread update is basically a good update and many have no problems or at least just minor annoyances. What Verizon should do is work diligently with those few having major issues to resolve their problems or provide a non-rollback alternative and I think they are doing this. Also providing a rollback lets Verizon and Motorola off the hook too easily.

Those same "reprogramming the bootloader with the SPF (SBF) image file" also VOIDS the warranty. Any further discussion of that isn't permitted on this community per the Terms of Service. Enough said.

Not true Ann. I called Verizon last Thursday and their Level 2 techs said if I could find a Verizon Direct store that still had Froyo in their computer system they could flash my phone back to the awesome OS Froyo. Gingerbread is trouble.

Unfortunately, Froyo had already been removed from their system. There is no warranty issues here. Its just common decency. EN3 is correct.

Yes, Froyo should be returned to those that want it.

Also, I couldn't care less about letting anyone off the hook easy. I just want my awesome phone back. I'll post my list of issues in another thread.

What's so hard to understand? If Verizon does it (reflashes the phone) there is no warranty issue. But if you do it (and Verizon finds out) then the warranty is void and Verizon may refuse to provide technical support.

Talk about beating a dead horse.......

I was President of the GB Sux Club after it came out. At least a dozen bugs and glitches were created after I installed it.

But, you know what?

In the weeks that have followed, as apps have been updating (you should check the Market for available updates if you don't have them set to auto), and I check daily, something interesting has happened.

Most of the bugs and glitches have mysteriously gone away.

Is/was GB the "problem"? It wasn't perfect, but it wasn't the problem.

After GB, my phone did and does bizarre things from time to time that makes me wonder how they could be caused by a conflict the O.S. is having with a 3rd party app.
The 3G dropping issue notwithstanding.

There are some issues, yes. But, I contend apps are the main "problem".

Can going back to Froyo (if it were possible) do more harm than good, if 3rd party apps are updated for GB? That's above my pay grade.

I did a reset after GB and it solved nothing. I defiantly refused to un-install all apps, or reboot in Safe Mode.

I did NOTHING but let the developers update their apps and right now, my phone is largely bug and glitch free, again.

In politics, there was the saying, "It's the economy, stupid". In Android, "It's the apps, stupid". (Not speaking to anyone in this forum).

Yes, the evil empire has it right when it comes to the stranglehold they have on which apps are allowed on their tiny iphones.

But, you know what? If, OEMs did the same, the Android experience wouldn't be the frustrating situation it is at times, ESPECIALLY after EACH update.

Ann as others have said its not a problem as long as verizon dose it. You had implied that it was impossible in your first statement I was just telling you how they can do it.

Bottom line with all the other **bleep** put aside. I do comprehend for the vast majority they prefer gingerbread. I do not I was perfectly satisfied with my droid with froyo. I never asked for the upgrade nor did I want it. Now if it is true and verizon has now made this update optional than they owe it to their customers who were forced into this upgrade a option of rolling it back, or replacing their phone with another droid 2 with froyo as an operating system. In my opinion I am not asking for the impossible I am just simply asking to be treated with respect. So far verizon has not chosen to do so. I can only hope that they will change their mind only time will tell...

I second the thought that updates should be optional. If we can use Windows 98 well into the next millennium on our pc, why not keep the same version of software on our phones?

VZW and Moto will argue that any update makes the phone better, eliminates issues and results in fewer calls to CS, reducing their costs.

Don't expect things to change. You might be one of the few that refuse to accept that and keeps on screeching in their ears, pushing for a change.

The answer to the Op's question for me is no. An here's why in our Society we move forward in any thing we do When we build a building, a Tunnel , or even a Vehichle the assembly moves forward. the same hold true for tecknology it moves forward look were we came from in Television back when my folks were young like the youngsters of today they first started out only listning to radio because thats all there was. Then the B/W tv's came out an for years thats what they watch untill Color Tv. an Now were watching High Deph an when we look at that blade of grass on our sets it looks like were right there on the Football field. An another reason for moving look at the Medical Technologie back in the 50 or 60 if you had a baby an it was a premie its chances of survival was slim an now a premie has as much as chance of growing up big an strong as a full turm baby. I could go on in on with advances in technologie like what we accomplished in space from the Gemini Program , Appollo , an the shuttle an international space station to Hubble. So when you say you want to go back. to what worked good for ya. think what we'll accomplish by going forward. :smileyhappy: B33

You make some good points B33, but we're getting into apples and oranges.

Only speaking for myself and only speaking for this phone. When it is a smooth functioning device and needs no update (color scheme changes, subtle U.I. changes, etc) to "improve it", I'd rather leave it alone.

Yes, updates are primarily to address issues, but they ultimately create just as many issues as they solve.

For the record, there are people that still watch tv on a CRT set with rabbit ears. There are people that drive 30+ year old vehicles and so on.

They do so because they choose to, or, perhaps out of necessity, but in either case, they should not be disparaged.

For those that don't like the constant forcing upon of updates (that often cause issues), maybe a smartphone isn't for them.

Or, maybe they would have less issues with a phone on an O.S. that isn't so vulnerable to bugs and glitches (for whatever reason) after updates. And, that could be several, including BB, Windows and the evil empire.

Your points are respected. Please respect the opinions of others, too. Not saying you don't, just asking you to.

upgraded to a Droid 3 last month from a Droid 2... all I can say is... I'll take the Droid 2 with 2.2 over the Droid 3 with 2.3 anyday.. my wife took my Droid 2 and is using it to replace her old LGEnv3... her Droid 2 updated itself to 2.3 about 2 weeks ago... I definitely like 2.2 a lot better

A roll back option or an update that changes the "look" of the phone to the previous version would be great!!!

So my answer is Yes!.

I dislike each one of the UI changes,. The upgrade took away the look and feel of the phone that was my primary reason for choosing the R2D2 model over the "plain' one.

I love the original green keypad. And the clock font when was docked. And the white on black screen when going into settings!

The GB upgrade was nagging me every hour to install and unfortunately I didn't stumble on anyone mentioning the UI changes so I went ahead and installed it.

I am not sure on what planet shoving a color scheme and a substantially different looking keypad is considered an upgrade.

I still perfer froyo over gingerbread, yes that's my opinion and a growing group of other dissidents. yes I will admit that we are in the minorty, but I still feel that neither Motorola nor Verizon have the right to force everyone to update. both companies need to seriously rethink their treatment of their customers. it all comes down to simple respect, motorola nor verizon truly respects their customers personal preferences. if they truly did this update would have been optional. but this update was more beneficial to motorola and verizons bottom line and to make it easier for their tech support staff than customer wishes and preferences. bottom line our wishes, our preferences and our opinions are secondary, and that is extremely poor excuse and customer service even it is only a small amount of customers, it would not adversely effect Motorola nor Verizon to allow a "choice" they have done so in the past with other updates. To me it seems that Verizon / Motorola have forgoten that we chose to give them our business not the other way around....

With that being said I still can not confirm or deny that verizon has made this change to gingerbread optional. The answer I get from Verizon is they can not comment on verizon policies and that they will pass the information on to their superiors. I hope in the next several days I will be able to post a confermation if Verizon is now indeed giving their customers who have not received the change to gingerbred a "choice" reject that change and keep froyo

I would say yes only for the fact that when updating your OS sometimes it can really cause a lot of issues in a device that weren't there before. When I upgraded my Dinc to Gingerbread I had a whole host of different issues that I hadn't had before. So yes if it's causing problems with your device. There should be an easy solution to roll back to the previous OS so they can work out the bugs for when you decide to update.
