2.3.6 update issues

So after doing the 2.3.6 update for my Droid Charge My phone froze and is now stuck with the samsung logo. I tried removing battery and letting it sit after waiting 4hrs hoping it would finish the update itself. From there I had tried doing a factory reset on the phone. This is what I've done thus far.

Removed battery re inserted the battery and then held down the volume down button then tapped the power button. I now have a little android on my phone in yellow saying "dowloading" which also says "Do not turn off Target!!!" I have been waiting for a change for 30min and it still hasnt changed.

I think it may be frozen.... anyone else have any luck trying to tackle this issue?? Any productive feedback will be appreciated.

this issue has not been solved so any input or solutions are again still welcomed. I am new to this so accidently said it was solved and cant figure out how to remove the "solved"

When I did the 2.3.6 update on my Samsung Charge, the phone seized up with the same symptoms as yours. I tried the same hard reset procedure you did with the exact same results. After further research, I found out that the hard reset procedure for the Samsung Charge on Verizon is different than the procedure we followed:

"Press and hold the Volume up key+Home key+Power button simultaneuously until the Samsung logo appears then release."

This brings up the Android system recovery screen. From there, scroll to "wipe date/factory reset" using the volume up/down keys and then hit the home key to select. After that, scroll to "reboot system now" and let the phone reboot.

The hard reset returns the phone to its original factory-fresh state, so you'll have to reload your apps. Hopefully, your contacts were saved with Backup Assistant or another BU method. 'Hope this helps. BTW, when I did the same update on my wife's Samsung Charge, Gingerbread installed without a problem Go figure.

My daughter is away at school with the Charge - nearest help of any sort a town or two over (she has no car). Her phone got the bungled update Tuesday night. For assorted reasons, it is critical for her phone to always be working.

Needless to say, her phone's upgrade failed the same way so many others are. We tried the battery pull, sd and sim card pulls. No avail. I finally got tech support from VZW on conference call with her in her dorm (and with me), we soon got put to a level 2 tech to do the hard reset, which went smoothly. I wanted a tech on the line in case got things worse. The tech did well, the phone is working again, and my daughter is now cleaning up the mess.

The tech noted that they have asked Google to automatically, in Markets, show all the programs that had been installed before and were available to download at no cost. That could save a huge amount of effort in cleaning up after a mess like this. The tech did use the Backup Assistant to reload contacts. I asked if the tech could pass on a suggestion to VZW to upgrade the Backup Assistant to also backup personal preferences like the home pages, etc.

I don't know why so many people had problems, or why VZW seems so surprised after a few days straight of this happening. I will say that the 2 techs (L1, L2) were polite and professional, which is greatly appreciated. We pay a lot for Verizon Wireless and at least the service level here was excellent.
