So I woke up this morning and realized I had a popup that notified me of the update. I clicked install now and i was taken to a downloading type screen. I walked away for literally one minute and came back and my phone had already rebooted. I thought it had just downloaded quickly or something, but i went to About Phone and realized it hadn't updated at all. Now, when I go check for the update in System Updates it says it is currently up to date.
Could anyone help me figure out as to why it did not download and if I could somehow get the update pushed to me a second time or something?? I've been reading up on manually updating to gingerbread but I'm really skeptical.
Ashley,
Try this...Remove battery, remove SIM card, and remove SD card.
Wait 2-3 minutes, all the time hugging your phone, and then re-install the SD card, the SIM card, and then the battery.
Not sure but hope this helps. It cannot hurt.

So I did what you said, I took everything out, waited, then put it back in. It came on and i checked for system updates and the update was there. It downloaded all the way and took about 10mins or so. It then prompted to me to Restart and Install. I clicked that, and it rebooted. When it came back on I went to About Phone and saw my Firmware Version is still 2.2.1. Ughh, I thought it was finally going to work. Idk what more to do or if something went wrong. /
I am having similar issues. Called tech support. They had me remove sim card, battery, etc for a few minutes. Put them back in and can initiate the download agagin. About 3 minutes in it has a real quick triangle and reboots back to 2.2.1... I bought my phone in July. I wonder if we have a newer hardware version that is causing issues? My next plan is to do a factory reset and then try again. I was excited to see the system update notification this morning but so far after 4 attempts I am still at 2.2.1
I've also slowly tried removing apps that I don't use often hoping to free up more memory or address the cause for the error but still nothing.
Sounds liek a cachign issue.
Try booting into recovery, clearing both cahce and do a factory restore (backup contacts first).
I am at a loss as to what is happening. All I can say is try a manual update. If that does not work you probably will have to do a Factory Reset and then a manual update. As HoustonHeart said, back up your contacts BEFORE the factory reset. Go thru this thread and use my instructions.

JerryF,
I first did the manual update and reported the same issue. I was hoping that the OTA would complete the Gingerbread upgrade but apparently not. For whatever reason I'm hesitant to factory reset the phone but hopefully it does the trick. Otherwise I'm not sure what I'll do then.
AshleyBabby,
Any success yet?
I just tried the reset from within the Privacy section. Started the update and once again no luck! I may be fighting a losing battle.?
Should I take more drastic measures by going into the recovery mode Vol. Up / Home / Power? Can i reformat the SD card, Wipe Cache, etc? Is there any options that I should absolutely not do?
Ashley & Reefboy,
Any chance you bought your phones on eBay and you received a phone that was rooted and because of that the update will not install. I ask because from what you say it sounds as if your phone is refusing to install GB 2.3.6?
Go to settings>about phone and go to bottom of the page. Do your settings EXACTLY match the photo? The photo shows the STOCK EE4 Froyo 2.2.1 settings. If thet don't match that may be why the install is failing.
BTW, do NOT reformat the SD card.
I bought mine new from Costco and it does match your attached image exactly.
Don't format SD card? ooops... I formated sd card, wiped cache, and basically any thing I thought may give me a chance. All for not. Still no success. I called verizon and I should be talking with Samsung tomorrow. Tech support said I did everything they would have had me try. If Samsung can't help then I believe they will be giving me a new phone.

Reefboy & Ashley too,,
I still have a feeling that it is the file you downloaded that is causing your problem. Read this again and double check that the original name of the file you downloaded was update_EE4B_to_EP4D.zip and that you renamed it to update.zip. Also, after you drag it to your root directory in your phone check there to see that it does NOT say: update.zip.zip.
Some folks have ended up with the .zip in there twice. The safest way to rename this file is to delete the _EE4B_to_EP4D part leaving behind ONLY the update.zip. The give it one more try.

This is for the Samsung Charge phone from Verizon. My battery was charged to 98%. I did NOT have the phone plugged into the charger. To do this your Samsung Charge phone you MUST be running STOCK on Fro yo 2.2.1 EE4. This update does NOT root your phone.
I went to the URL shown below and downloaded the Gingerbread update file named update_EE4B_to_EP4D.zip to my PC. The file size was 117,613 KB in my PC but after it was copied into the root folder of my Samsung Charge phone the file size was 114.9 MB.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1364298
After you go to this URL you want to choose the FIRST URL that ends in HAG3RFTBY6 and download that file to your PC. It is named "update_EE4B_to_EP4D.zip"
Next, while it was still in your PC, change the name of the file to: update.zip
Then using the USB cable copy the file update.zip from your PC to your Charge phone's SD Card root file. Do not copy it into a another folder. That's where all my Music, Photos, Videos and so forth are stored. After you copy it there you should go to the APP My Files to confirm that update.zip is there in the root folder on your SD card. The file size is now 114.9 MB.
Next I pressed three buttons at the same time (this was tricky and a bit difficult). I probably tried 8-10 times before it worked. What it was doing is turning off the phone but I kept trying. The three buttons are: Volume Up Button, Home Button, and the Power Button. One user gave me the suggestion to Hold Volume Up + Hold Home + Hold Power until you see the Samsung logo, then release the Power button. Finally release the other two buttons (Volume Up + Home) several seconds later.
In my case the screen that came up was a RECOVERY screen. It said recovery at the top. You will see a choice of about five things you can do. On that list of choices I touched UPDATE.ZIP and then I pressed the HOME Button at the bottom of the phone. The update started and the screen that came up had an picture of an open box with an arrow coming out going down toward a Droid. Now we know there really is a little Droid doing the update work! There also was a BAR showing the progress which was slow at times.
It took all of 15+ minutes and then the phone rebooted itself and finally just turned off. The little Droid was probably exhausted by then! I waited a couple more minutes after the screen went blank (black) and then pressed the power button. The phone started and it's working very well on Gingerbread 2.3.6. You might be advised to reboot the phone again for a second time.
I am having the same problems, I have that exact screen above and for some reason the over the air gingerbread update wont work for me, I think I am going to go see what they can do at the verizon store.
I tried taking out my SIM card SD card and Battery again but again no luck after the update installed still 2.2 so I'm going to try to do a factory reset and clearing the cache and hopefuly that will work
From what I've done (exactly what you are hoping to do) I wouldn't get your hopes up. I have been unsuccessful. Verizon is supposed to conference call me this afternoon with Samsung to see if they can push something out other wise the service support lady sounded as though they may have to exchange phones.
@jj515789 - I've seen a few posts from others having the same issue we are having. It would not surprise me that they come up with a fix.
@JerryF - I tried downloading it on two different occassions. Each file has the same exact file hashes so I'm fairly certain they are correct. Not one single person has looked at their file hash information (CRC32, MD5, or SHA-1) to confirm ours is correct. But honestly I downloaded it from the links you provided and I'm a competent computer user for the last 20+ years so I'm fairly certain it is something real with our phones and not our technique.
Reefboy and Ashley too,
This is probably over kill but...
If you want to I will send you the same update.zip file that I used and it worked.
It's 14.9 MB after dfragging it to the phone and 117,613 KB in my Win XP computer so if you want to try this, just for fun, send me a private message with your Google Email because Google allows larger files to be emailed.
I agree, you do have a good file and it's something in the phone.
Personally, I really hate Factory Resets or phone replacements where you get someone else's returned "broken" phone which may be in pretty bad shape itself...YUK.
Jerry: Yes, I did happen to buy my phone from eBay, a few months ago. But I looked in the About Phone section and my info matched yours exactly. Could there be something on my phone from the original user of my phone that is causing my update not to go through? And I haven't tried to mannually update my phone yet, should I try that way before doing anything else?
Also someone said something about a newer version of this update because others are having the issues we have been having, should I wait for that or is that just a rumor?
Reefboy: Yeah, I did a factory reset for nothing because it didn't work. And it sucks because I just recently did a reset because my 3G wasn't working, ugh i'm getting so tired of resetting my phone and putting stuff back the way I like it. I just want this update to be done and over with.
Ps: Yes this is still AshleyBabby, for some reason this site made me make a new account just to reply to you guys. -.-
WOW...you did a factory reset or two. Good for you. From what you said, I do not think that there is anything on your phone that is holding up the update. Re the rumor on a different update, I personally do not believe it because over the last 2-3 months I have heard so much bad and downright incorrect info from VZ personnel that I don't trust 'em until I see it.
Yes, especially because your did a factory reset, I think you should do a manual update to GB 2.3.6.
Re-read the enclosed instructions again
Best regards and best of luck,

I'm having the same problem. I did a factory update and gained nothing by doing it. Don't do it unless you absolutely have to. If you do use an application backup and restore app. It saved my butt.
