Nearly every day my phone encounters an error where it is unable to play videos without restarting the phone first. This is true for any video app as well as youtube.
Sounds like your data connection went dorment, try cycling airplane more instead of restarting, if it works then that is your issue.... For some reason the network keeps doing that with the connection.
Switching to airline mode and back had no effect at all.
Try uninstalling all third party media players.
If the problem goes away then load them back one by one to find the culprit.
