Incredible over heating

My phone over heats when ever I go on the internet and when ever IM charging it idk if it is happing to anyone else but me.

It never happened to me before and the last month or two it started out of no where and my phone gets so hot to the point when I put it to my face it will burn it and/or leave a red mark on it from it being so hot. IM on my second phone and it still does the same thing and Verizon says they don't know what is doing this.

Thank you for reaching out to the community on this issue. First, I want to assure you that for the Incredible to overheat is an out of the ordinary circumstance. From my experience, the Droid Incredible has been one of the most maintenance free device in our portfolio. May I ask does the entire phone overheats or just the battery? Are you using the original battery that came with the device? My HTC Incredable is also over heating. I would have to remove the battery to get it to cool down. I hava also read many posts on other forums about HTC incredable going into a continuous reboot cycle. That some times can be fixed by a new battery, or a factory reset. These have been on phones as new as one day to a year or so old. I don;t know if it is android or HTC that is crappy but I'm hopeing consumer reports asks about these because I am beginning to believe this is planned obsolescence. Especially if the user does not use many extera fee functions. Just send him an update and presto his phone is a brick and he needs to come in and cough up a few hundred bucks. I had an old nokia phone that worked well for many years. These smart phones seam to crap out quicky in a little over a year.

organdonor, I have had a similar problem when I was using my phone in the car for navigation. However, I noticed that this only happens when you use the phone extensively (e.g. screen on as in navigation and GPS on) while plugged in. Also notable was the fact that I was using a car charger, not the original charger that comes with the phone. For me, this has only happened when I'm using the phone for navigation in the car. My solution has been to keep the screen off (just voice guidance is enough for me most of the times) or unplug the phone when the screen is kept on. I also noticed that once the phone is fully charged and if you still keep it plugged in while using it extensively, it overheats.

Ok, here's the story with the HTC Incredible and overheating, also known as the reboot issue.

When the Incredible first came out, it was fantastic. What I mean by this, is prior to Android 2.2 being released for our phones, the Incredible was basically worry free, much like the Verizon Employee posted in this thread.

A few months after the Incredible was released, a new version of Froyo was released for our phone, making it ready for Android 2.2. This, along with Android 2.2, posed no problems for the Incredible, and the phone continued to function well.

Fast forward to almost a year later, around the month of May, give or take, a new version of Froyo was pushed to our phones. Many people thought this push was to allow our phones to upgrade to Android 2.3, which we all know didn't, and won't ever happen.

After speaking with many of my friends (I graduated from the College of Engineering at the University of Illinois) who work in the mobile phone market (as engineers, designers of the phones), it appeared that HTC was receiving complaints of hardware failures due to long term heat damage on some of their phones near the end of 2010 (these are not specifically related to the incredible, but may have been).

Therefore, the new version of Froyo that was pushed out around May reduced the overheating temperature on the Incredible, which in turn, causes it to "restart" until the temperature is reduced below levels.

Because of this, I can no longer use aps (such as Angry Birds, etc) for more than 10 minutes without my phone restarting. Even worse, if you're out on a hot day and leave your phone in the sun, I've had mine automatically restart and continue to loop until I moved it to a location it could cool off.

All of this makes sense, as everything my friends have told me seems to be accurate as to when these issues arose.

The worst part? There's nothing we can do about it, nor is there anything Verizon/HTC is willing to do. If Verizon customer support does give you a phone to replace your current one, it's just a matter of time before it updates to the new version of Froyo (if it doesn't happen immediately, it will happen very shortly), and your problems will start all over again.

lol a week after saying we'll never get 2.3 we have 2.3.....guess they heard ya over at HTC and Verizon!! My experience with the phone, and I have the 2nd Generation Droid Incredible with the Sony screens because of those Samsungs gobbling up the other screen, basically it gets warm sometimes when i'm using the web but besides that no real issues. Once in awhile...meaning like maybe once ever 2 months the phone will reboot on its own, but besides that I have had no issues with the DINC

Do you have a memory card? This was happening to me i removed my memory card twice i believe put it back in and it stopped! So strange give it a shot worked for me!

I have also had an overheating problem and it has been most apparent over the last week. It has been receiving and sending text messages in an extremely slower fashion than usual, and tonight as I was charging it (in the regular wall charger) it was getting extremely hot that I took the battery out to cool down... at this point, I am almost afraid to turn it back on. Considering I still have another year on my contract, any suggestions of what to do?

Verizon, is this an instance where my phone insurance can be used for battery replacement?

I have had my droid incredible for almost a year and a half now and I had to reset my phone to factory settings because the memory was full but it wasn't over heating until after that. If I turn it off my phone cools down but if I take out the battery it also cools down. I have had the same battery that came with the phone. It's just odd but it makes me think my phone is going to blow up.

@organdonor: i have as well have had my Incredible for over a Year. An she get's warm from time to time.. An since you had your Incredible hooked up to the charger while Surfing the Web it may have Caused this.

Now if you was surfing Via the Network it could've got warm from always wanting to Connect to the the Towers.. An as i said you could've pushed the radio to wear it may caused a Warm up flair as you was charging the battery. When I'm web surfing or doing other things that's the same as that.. i connect to my Wi-Fi as much as i can especially if i'm at Home.

It does'nt pull so hard on the Inc. because it's got a Consistant signal it can pull from as from when it's doing it from the Towers. There's an App i'd like you to Try it's called System Pannel App it's in the Market an is free to Download you can get the Paid Version for a Small Fee but the free works Pretty Good once you Downloaded it an it's on your Phone. Go into the App An up towards the Top.

Tap were the CPU, Memory , an Storage indicaters are it will take you to that Area an while there schroll the paige up to were you come to battery Charging an Temperatures There it will tell you in Deg. of Celsius what the Temps are. Now you can chage this to Fahrenheit reading if it's easier for ya. I have mine set to this an my Temps Run from 89.6 to 100.6 as its showing Now. But give this app a Try an let me Know what your Temps are in the Inc. especially when your surfing or as soon as get done Surfing the Web. Keep me Posted B33 :smileyhappy:

Mine seems to be doing the same thing now since the last update and it doesn't seem to want to charge when i first plug it in. I had to pull the battery out and restart it but it seems to keep doing it again each time i get messages in again. I wonder its its the phone over heating itself since the battery wasn't as hot as the screen was on it. I have had mine for a year and when it over heats it seems to run the battery down again. It never seemed to have done this until the last update we got from HTC.

I had to replace the battery with new and yes original OEM batteries for my HTC incredible. It over heats no matter where or how I charge the phone. I feel it is the light from the screen along with the better causing this issue. Verizon refused to help and 6 moths later HTC still has not been able to answer why this continues to happen. It is behind frustrating to get zero help from Verizon and HTC the phone maker. They seem oblivious to the issue and as usual they have no fix or how to fit at all. I had to pay out of pocket for the battery twice. At times I have have to put the battery in my freezer to cool it down. I have to use an icepack on the back of the phone to use it with out over charging. I have seen and know of people who have actually gotten burned from the heat from the battery. Of course no matter how many time you ask why this happens there is no answer. The only answer is profit driven and who cares about the consumer type mentality. After being with Verizon wireless for over 12 years I'm kind of disgusted by the lack of help to the point I have given up on HTC and Verizon for help. As much as I like the phone is has failed me when I have had emergencies. The phone overheated and cause battery to fail. I got stuck on the side of the road and forced to walk 8 miles to get get help since I couldn't even use the phone to call police or anyone for help.

My Droid just began overheating when it is plugged into the car charger, and then when it is getting notifications from email. I really need my phone for my business - should I just get a new battery? This is a replacement phone (my old one fell in water) so I'm not sure if insurance would cover it. Please assist asap, thank you.

Just adding my 2cents to this thread. My Dinc started rebooting a random times after the 2.3.4 OTA upgrade last year. Replacing the battery did not help. It first appeared when I was using the gps + maps app to navigate and it rebooted. Seemed like when I was using it a lot it would get warm and reboot. Now I can be doing almost anything and it will reboot, even when it does not feel warm. It's pretty much unreliable if it's the least bit warm. I've started wedging it into the AC vent in the car to keep it cool.

The other thing that's annoying is that if the problem is an overheating issue, rebooting the phone is the dumbest thing to do! It just runs the cpu a full speed making it hotter and it keeps rebooting over and over again until you remove the battery. Hello! It's Hot! The proper thing to do is shutdown to let it cool.
