Droid X camera shutter stuck closed

I was using my Droid X to take some pics since the last OTA update.

All of a sudden the shutter decided to stay closed, and when I use the camera app the picture is black.

Tried several power off/battery pulls but they didn't work.

Before I go ask for a new phone, does anyone have any suggestions or similiar stories ?

yea, I was going to suggest the battery pull ..

have you tried to boot into SAFE MODE? just to test it..?

Power Off

Press & Hold the Menu Button

Power up, continue holding the Menu button

After a min or 2 it should boot saying SAFE MODE in lower left corner.

test the camera app

To get out of safe mode, power off/on as usual.

Otherwise a trip to verion to have the phone replaced.

Odd thing. I can't seem to get it into safe mode. Perhaps I am holding the menu button (2nd from left on the bottom) too long.

Rats. Guess its not due to a 3rd party app (non verizon/non stock).

Have had my Droid X for just over a year and really liked the phone until last week. I haven't been able to figure out what but something changed in a recent software/app update. Now the camera stopped working and battery drains about 3 times faster than usual. Everything else seems normal. I've tried battery removal, reprogramming (*228), rebooting in safe mode, etc. with no luck. Haven't tried Factory reset yet but went to local Verizon store and rep said the shutter doesn't open, my warranty is now expired, and all that can be done is replace phone! I'm really peeved! All my previous smart phones were LG are are still running fine (handed down to kids). Anyone have other options for trying to fix this Droid X?

I like the ability to customize my phone but reliability and endurance are much more important for me and if I'm going to have to spend $$$ on a replacement, I may have to opt for the next Apple product, if this Droid can survive long enough. Somebody convince me why I should stick with a Droid.

If you need someone to convince you, you sound like an excellent candidate for an Apple product.

Like you said, customization is secondary and in addition, you never have to worry about having to pull the battery.

Nope..... you can make up your own mind on what you want for a phone/OS/manufacturer/network.

Actually, since GB, you can no longer turn OFF the shutter sound. I use Vignette and it USED to be able to be silenced. No lnger since GB -- unless someone knows some magic.

Yes Cody, it's still there. When you are using the camera, go to

Menu > Settings > Shutter Tone.
