Keyboard has completely disappeared

I was using my phone one minute, and the next, the keyboard disappeared. Now, I don't mean that I simply can't access it. I mean *poof* gone, vanished, uninstalled, completely missing as a feature of my phone.

I did a soft reset (power on/off), hard reset (battery out/in), and it turns out that I missed an update, so I downloaded that as well. The keyboard is still missing.

I have yet to try reformatting my phone. I am trying to avoid it if possible, and besides, the keyboard seems like something of an integral part of the core software, so I am not yet convinced that it will even do anything.

No keyboard? That's not good at all.

Technically, a factory reset should get the keyboard to come back ,but let me ask if you have installed a 3rd party keyboard application from the market. If so, try to uninstall it and just use the keyboard feature that came installed on the phone.

You can also put the Incredible 2 in safe mode. Safe Mode temporarily disables all applications that have been installed via the Android Market. Performing this troubleshooting step is necessary to determine whether a 3rd party application is the cause of an Operating System / Application issue. Safe Mode should always be performed prior to a hard (factory) reset.

As always, the last resort is factory/hard reset. I'm confident that will bring the keyboard back for you.

Wow, this keeps gettting worse and worse.

So I tried restarting in safe mode. Nothing. Started deleting the majority of apps. Nothing either, except... now my back Back and Settings buttons don't work. I was going to resort to a factory reset, but now I'm not even sure how to access those menus with non-functioning buttons.

Combine this with tons of useless bloatware, an auto-updater that doesn't work, and mysterious battery drains, I seriously regret purchasing this phone.

I relocated and installed a 3rd party keyboard again, which seems to allow the Settings and Back buttons to work. I went to do the factory reset, but it got stuck in the Rebooting sequence. Pulled out the battery, restarted, went to factory reset again, and frozen yet again.

Hi Brian_Rowe,

I am sorry to learn of the issues you are experiencing with your phone and the inability to perform a factory reset. Please try the Factory reset alternate method outlined below:

Press the Power button for 3 - 5 seconds.
Select Power off.
If the device isn't responding proceed with step 3.
Remove / replace the battery.
Press and hold the Volume down key then press and hold the Power button for 3 to 5 seconds.
When the HBOOT screen appears, release the Volume down key.
Press the Volume key to select FACTORY RESET then press the Power button.
This boot process takes several moments. If the device hangs or freezes, remove / replace the battery.
Perform Initial Activation / Setup.
