Swype dictionary disable

Hi,

'Finally upgraded from my original droid to the x2. When I tried swype it guesses every word - always wrong -. how can I get it to just type in the letters I pick and not try to think for me? I turned off every possible option under settings and it still does it. It really seems that the folks that write software and apps for phone don't actually use their own stuff. Why is it that they always take a good idea and keep messing with it until it sucks,?

As you know SWYPE is an "intelligent" keyboard that tries to figure out what word you are trying to enter. So there is no "turning off" of the intelligence if you use SWYPE - otherwise how would it know what word you mean when you drag your finger through the letters. Are you just tapping the letter keys or actually dragging thru the letters, ala SWYPING? Yea, it definitely needs improvement - and in fact there is version 3.0 available for like a year, but alas, neither Verizon nor Moto will release it to us. (I don't understand WHY frankly and sort of miffs me that they won't.) If you just wish a dumb(er) keyboard, just use the KEYBOARD instead of SWYPE. (Long press on your text entry box and the INPUT option will come up for you to select KEYBOARD.) if you decide to go with just the KEYBOARD option there are better Keyboard Apps available in Market. PS - do you have WORD PREDICTION turned OFF ?? in the Settings for Swype.

Definitely check word prediction, as Cody mentioned.

Swype is a love/hate relationship, like this phone. Some words (like "some") it NEVER gets right and I have to manually type. "Out", "the", and ironically "iphone" are others.

Swype is much better than pecking away, but it doesn't get the job done completely. Like getting home from the drive thru and finding out they put mayo on your burger instead of mustard.

You're still gonna eat it, but cuss while you do.

I turned all the options off, but my recent research - as you say - is that it is not a faster way to type but an 'intelligent' (and I use the word loosely here) keyboard. I want to use it because if it just shows what I type it is faster than traditional tapping but the reality is that if I have to correct so many words then it is slower and thus useless. As for it working without the dictionary it could easily pick off any lettr you change direction on, but that is neither here nor there. I have always been a little bahumbug about this type of 'intelligence' becuase the software a) is never more knowledgeable than mayself as to what I am really trying to get to next and 2) the code is always written such that it has more authority than the user which is the height of arrogance, so i am trying to tell it I do not want its choice of result and it is say tough s__t.

I did try to log into swype forum but it won't let me register and account. Maybe it 'intellligence' is saying oh-oh this guy figured out we suck... and won't let me in to complain.

If you're using the swype keybord you definately need "word predition" turned on if you're swyping. Otherwise when swyping if you are slightly off it definately will pick the wrong letter. For example, when swyping the word "type", if you miss the correct letter by a little you may get "tour".

Also, you can use the swype keyboard to just touch the letters you want instead of swyping (sliding) your finger across the keyboard.

I remember when I first got a phone with "Swype" pre-installed, it took me about 2-4 weeks to get used to it. But after I did, it was definately faster for me.

This peaked my interest and I turned off Word Prediction and nothing changed. Swyped performed as normal, i.e., about 75% accurate. Speed vs. Accuracy does produce noticeable differences in accuracy. Adjusting S vs. A way down increases accuracy.

I too have a love/hate relationship with my swype keyboard, you an adjust the word choice & speed vs.. Accuracy setting, this does help a little for me. I prefer a slower response but better accuracy myself. I do realize the more I use swype the better it gets. I would completely recommend using the tutorial, I was much less frustrated with swype after I went through it once. Good Luck!

Yea, I've been using SWYPE since I got this phone in 2010. I tried going to the regular Keyboard just to see if I preferred it. I immediately went back to SWYPE -- even with some of the difficulties with some words I Swype. I really like SWYPE. I just wish Verizon or Moto or whoever would release version 3.0 to us. I don't understand why we aren't eligible for it.
