Preventing ICS update ?

How does one stop this ?

VZW Customer Service says its not possible.

I do not want it....or the associated headaches that invariably come from a complete O/S change.

My phone works fine now, I know where everything is and how to use it, and do not want to change that.

I did a Cache Wipe which has stopped the 'Install Update' prompt for now, but assume its only a matter of time until it returns...and eventually will force the so-called 'upgrade'...

I find it aggravating that we're being forced to 'update' with no Opt Out provisions....

I think you can keep "ignoring" it forever or until you go insane from having to ignore it...whichever comes first.

There should be a "refined" version or a patch for the existing version sometime in August(or so I hear)

According to both VZW CS (on phone) and the people at the local VZW store, the 'update' will eventually force its way in.

The store guy said that typically the 'Install Later' time window will be reduced until you miss a prompt at 2:30 AM and it installs. (Although he did says that it checks battery level prior to starting....so keep it at a low level and do not charge at night!)

There really needs to be an Opt Out selection for those of us who see no benefit to this massive change and do not want to invest hour$ of our time cleaning up afterwards....

As it is, I've already spent valuable time trying to figure out how to stop it.

Aside from potential technical/functionality issues, there's the matter of the (re)learning curve as you slowly discover all of the things they changed, deleted, omitted, etc....

This is really for Verizon's convenience, they want everyone using model X to be on the same release, so support is (theoretically) easier. Even if they didn't do this, I'm sure the first time you encounter a problem, you would be told (after trying a factory reset!) to upgrade.

If you wanted to bite the bullet and save some stress and hair - do a cache wipe and an FDR then let it go, Before doing so, look for my posts on doing this without an app/data restore, it is hugely important in some(most??) cases that the "old" data from GB does not creep into ICS.

I don't think you'll be displeased. users that have done those two things seem to be humming along....and tripping over the learning curve.

IMHO - and I've been using smartphones since 04-05 and a 'Droidian since the OG Droid days, this is the best OS yet. Are there bugs? As the Alaskan nitwit would say: 'You betchya' but there are always going to be, it's life in the fast lane now.

My Maxx runs better than it ever has and many times better than the Razr that proceeded it. Also, as I mentioned, there is an update in the works...but no official acknowledgement of it nor a timeline for release.

Yes, I think this certainly helps remove many of the issues that people experience. The remainder might be caused by apps that haven't been updated, which is why some suggest manually restoring the apps one by one, and finding which causes an issue.

But... there may still be something else going on: EVERY update on EVERY phone creates comments "Best thing ever"/"This totally broke my phone", and not every happy person did a cache wipe and not every sad person didn't!
