Why won't my Samsung Fascinate update past Android 2.1?

I have tried updating my Samsung Fascinate to Android 2.2, but my phone keeps saying that it there are no new updates. I've even taken it to a Verizon store, but they just try to sell me a new phone. Does anyone have any ideas that may help me update my phone?

If you watch these forums, there are people that would tell you that you are lucky your Fascinate is still on Eclair. Froyo and Gingerbread have reported problems, and unless there is a compelling reason to update, why bother? Is the phone working ok now? Does it do everything you need? If you answered these "Yes", leave it alone. If you answered "No", then there are a few things that could be taking place.

Are you using WiFi when you are checking for updates? Updates are OTA on their broadband network, and will not get pushed over WiFi. Turn it right off when you check.

You could have Verizon check your connections (I am not sure what they are called), but I have seen people tel me that they talked to Verizon because they could not get updates, and they reset their phone "connection" in their system, had them shut the phone off and restart it, and it got the updates. The other way people have done this same thing is to have another smartphone handy, activate that on your line, and then reactivate the Fascinate. (Don't do it with anything other than a smartphone, especially if you have the unlimited plan as you will lose it.)

I'm stuck on firmware version 2.2.2.

My theory is Verizon Wireless has abandoned any further updates or update support for the Fascinate due to the age of the phone and the problems encountered with each update.

I suspect they no longer wish to spend any resources on a discontinued model.

The main reason that I want to get past 2.1 is that I want to be able to download apps like WatchESPN and the NCAA March Madness app. With 2.1 I'm stuck without flash video support, and my phone is therefore not compatible with these apps.

As to the question of WIFI: I've tried checking for updates with and without WIFI turned on. With WIFI, my phone just keeps saying "Please wait..." and doesn't ever resolve to anything. With WIFI off, that's when I get the "No new updates available" message.

I don't have another smartphone to activate, so I won't be able to try that option.
