I've had 4.0.4 for a few days now, and can say while things appear to have improved, my device still has issues. Have already experienced several dropped calls, loss of data connection, and complete mobile network disconnect :smileysad:
Since yesterday I have dropped a few calls and text take a while to send. It has been better than it was though. I am just about at the end of my rope with this phone. I am ready to give this up for the Maxx.
I was eagerly waiting for this update to fix the reception dropping issues.....and to my dismay it still drops. I was told this was the fix for it. My wife and I both have the galaxy nexus and both were updated to 4.0.4 and we are still experiencing the reception issues where we cannot make a call or text for about 5 to 10 seconds.
I'm fairly certain that a batch (who knows how large) of phones was shipped with faulty radios.
I for one have never had a problem with my phone's connection except for maybe a slow handoff between 3G and 4G, but that was fixed with the 4.0.4 radios.
A friend of mine had a device that would constantly lose its data connection. Text messages would fail, phone calls would drop, etc.
Verizon told him that an update would fix this, but I manually updated his phone to 4.0.4 a few months ago and the problem persisted. We reset the device to stock and had him swap it out for another device.
Since he got a new handset, he's been problem free.
So if you have issues with your data connection dropping I can almost guarantee your hardware is faulty. I suggest you demand a replacement from Verizon. It's likely that it'll be a refurb but that's not a problem, the phone works great if you have working hardware.
Okay.... Really was hoping the update was the fix.....it wasn't. So I called Verizon ....which was very helpful and has shipped me a replacement. Crossing my fingers hoping this will be the reception fix. I will update my findings later this week when I get the replacement phone.
Just don't go past your 14-day return period. I'm glad I got rid of my Nexus for my Rezound. ICS is nice, but it's not THAT big of a difference over Gingerbread.
Nope and my issues got worse. They have swapped my Sim card and sent me a replacement. Still nothing has helped. And its not like I'm in a rural area. I live right outside of NYC.
I updated 6/2/2012 my device has never had issues with data connection or text but I do have the dropped call issue. the update has not resolved this issue for me. I have been calling Verizon once a week since March and they have replaced the handset twice and sim card once. I am finished with this device. I'm going to demand a Rezound or Razr Max. Enough is Enough!!
NO!!
Just got the update on my Nexus is still showing no bars but says 3G ?
im on replacement #4 and sim card #3, nothing has helped. I think the update actually made my problem worse, i cannot keep a cellular signal for more than 10 seconds, then it turns gray then disappears completely with a white X
my update to 4.0.4 happened 6/2/2012 since then I have dropped 7 of 12 phone calls including 3 today. I called Verizon to report my displeasure and my rep has opted to send me a 4th replacement hardware & 3rd SIM card. At this point I doubt that I will ever have a fully functional Nexus Galaxy in my life. If this does not work I don't know what device I would be willing to move to, bad Droids killed Motorola for me, HTC scared me with the Thunderbolt. What's left. If this next Nexus does not work I am not sure whats next for me.
Nope, even have problems connecting to WiFi 10 feet from my router!
So my first galaxy nexus got hot while talking, so under the 14 day limit i got another handset, now this one has the reception 4G issues discussed here. Will they do another exchange within the 14 day limit of 2nd handset? Though I may just go back to my problem-free Motorola Droid X and back to my original contract end date/upgrade date(they actually moved my upgrade date 3 mos so some props to Verizon)
I've been on 4.0.4, and my GalNex now is the awesome phone that it should have been! I am in full 4G coverage, and I don't drop signals or calls at all. It is really a lot more stable. I also had the freeze and restart issue, that is gone too.
Short answer: No. Verizon replaced my first Galaxy Nexus under warranty because it completely lost its data connection and all the VZW-recommended fixes would not get it back. The replacement Nexus intermittently loses its network connection and has to be turned off/on to get it back. My wife has named it "Wiper" because it's intermittent. The phone is disconnected from the mobile network more than it's connected. The ICS 4.0.4 fix has not fixed the problem. I loved the original phone until this problem started, but if VZW cannot fix this problem, I plan to insist on some replacement phone model, assuming I remain with VZW.
Well got my replacement phone yesterday and activated it. My fingers were crossed hoping this would work. Much as I anticipated the signal dropped about 18 times in just a few hours. So I swapped back to my original phone. I didn't want to find out what else was wrong with that refurbished phone. This has to be a hardware problem.... Doesn't make sense with all the signal dropping issues.
I got my Galaxy Nexus about two months ago. It had serious signal issues - I noticed it mostly with voice, but a little bit with data too.
I upgraded to 4.0.4 and it didn't solve the problem. I realized it must be my device when I ran into my cousin who has the same phone, and his was pulling 3-4 bars, and mine had no signal at all (While holding them side-by-side).
I finally decided to request a replacement, which I received on Monday. The replacement works a million times better - which has led me to conclude that my original phone must have been a lemon - and with reading all the complaints I've seen here and on other forums, there must have been a whole batch of lemons.
Long story short: go to the verizon store and request a replacement. Hope for the best. My next step was going to be requesting a different phone (I.e. Razr maxx).
I did not have signal issues before but now my 3g signal has just stop working multiple times in the past few days. I have posted more in depth in more recent posts.
@Ninjustin, can you check under Settings->About->Baseband version? Does it say I515.09 or I515.10? Just wanted to know if you are running hardware version 9 or 10. I am running version 9 and after the 4.0.4 update, things are really looking good for my phone.
You mean you running Ver 9 after 4.0.4 update.mine is Ver 10 after 4.0.4 update.
and I have a weak or no signal
I had a "Korean" built nexus which was buggy and would not accept the 4.0.4 update. It just froze after the reboot. I got a replacement sent and it was a "China" built phone. I lost connection 28 times in less than 24 hours. I called Verizon and the "China" built phones are known to have the reception, drop calls and data loss issues. They sent me anoter Nexus (I made sure it was the Korean version as Samsung is a KOREAN company) and the phone is exactly what I had been hoping for. No issues with service, no launcher crashing, no android.media.process has stopped. I recommend to anyone with the reception issues to pull the battery and check if your phone is a "Chinese" version or a "Korean" version. Just my two cents but I am very happy with my 3rd nexus. Lets hope it lasts.
I still have my original shipped GalNex. And it is Korean made. Before 4.0.4 I had a lot of network drop and reboot issues, but all is good now.
Hasn't helped me at all.
my spouse and i have had the galaxy nexus for about 2 weeks now, we are in a high signal strength area but here are our problems...
we dont get any signal, not even a bar on the phone, cant even make a single phone call without it being dropped, battery life is horrible, basically we have to keep the phone plugged into the charger to hold battery life. cant even access the internet regardless if its 3g or 4g. when i do make a phone call the other person says it sounds like im 20 feet away from my phone, and its always cutting out, sounds very cracky.
we have done alot of research on the phone and i am now taking all the forms ive found into verizon to complain, why pay $160+ a month for two phones if we cant even use them correctly. we already tried talking to verizon once and they tried saying its our fault because we are in a bad signal area, when we arent, we`ve looked at the maps for sinanl and according to the map everything within a 50 mile range is 100% covered. im sick of these issues and i want them fixed. verizon is suppose to be the best phone service for my area, but yet i cant even use mine. we have heard that verizon is getting so sick of this that some people have gotten the razor in replacement and have had no issues.
i have owned smart phones before but by far this phone has been the worse, even prepaid through verizon gets better signal strength then this.
Hi all,
Well it has been more then a month since the update. My phone switches between different services without my intervention or restarting. I try and keep my phone on CDMA only to extend the battery life but here in West Los Angeles it shows i have plenty of signal but there is no connectivity. It does work in other areas, well sometimes.
The software update to the 4.0 should have addressed data connectivity trouble. It's good to know that the bars of service show up but we want to have your data working wherever it is that you are. Please try the steps below to try and fix your trouble.1. In Settings make sure WiFi is set OFF. WiFi being ON, even when not connected to a network, may impact the Verizon signal from coming through.2. Turn the phone off and remove the SIM Card for 30 seconds. Insert the SIM Card and turn the phone back on like normal. This forces the phone to refresh with our towers and can improve the experience.3. Verify there aren't any "Battery Saver" or "Battery Monitoring" applications as these have control over your data connection.Once those are all checked please retest and let us know if the trouble is resolved.Thank you,MariaC_VZWPlease follow us on Twitter @VZWSupport
There is nothing you can do to fix the problem so stop acting like you are trying to help people solve the issue! Almost all of your CErtified Like New devices have this issue and I had to go through this stupid step every time I called y'all! I finally settled on a Galaxy Nexus with a purple screen because your customer service is SO great! PLUS NO JELLY BEAN! Google, sprint, and Canada have it, but we don't! Pathetic
My wife and I are in the same boat as you.
Two nexus devices that drop data and calls, and have no battery life unless on Wi-Fi. The cellular radios in these phones are worthless. We're on our 4th phones and Verizon Customer Service will not give us a different model or give us a discount to buy different phones.
This is what happens to a phone when the cellular radio is made by VIA. Appears they're as bad as cellphone hardware as they are at computer hardware.
Funny coincidence that the Samsung Droid Charge used the same type of VIA radio and had the same problems. Next time, use Qualcomm.
Hopefully you never have an emergency that your LIFE depends on that one phone call!!! Verizon won't help you. They will just charge you $299 for a damaged device. Or send you multiple replacements that have the same issue!!!
I had my original phone for about 6 months. The 4.04 upgrade helped the 4G reception, or more accurately would switch from WiFi to 4G without rebooting the phone. About a month ago it started making these awful screeching sounds every 3rd call so I exchanged it. The replacement phone is made in china and has base band 1515.10 and build IMM76Q with unified search disabled. My data reception is much better, I get some limited 3G reception but compared to an SIII or a RAZR its pretty poor. The replacement has had 1 issue of making the screeching sounds but softly and the display seems to have more noticeable banding.
My big issue here is that I paid $300.00 for a top of the line phone without top of the line capabilities. When I exchanged my phone I exchanged it for a refurbished $99.00 phone. I love the pure Android experience and how the phone works. Myself and other Nexus owners should have better quality phones and timely updates. After all, we paid for these things.
The whole thing infuriates me. I've waited since the Droid 1 for another "Google Experience" device since the Droid X and Droid 3 I had would constantly randomly reboot, and the MotoBlur skins, bloatware, and slow bigfixes/updates ruined the experience of the phone. I was practically beside myself when Verizon finally started selling the Galaxy Nexus.
Now instead of enjoying a clean, bugfree Android experience... again I'm fighting with my phone for 10 months, except this time I can't even reliably make phone calls or use the data I pay for. Customer service sends us refurb after refurb with the same issues (likely because they all have this problem). I've been refused a different model of phone by customer service, nor will they give me a discount so I can buy new phones.
Its enough to make me consider dropping Verizon altogether, buy a pre-paid trac phone, and just use wi-fi on my Nexus. Why should continue to give Verizon money if they won't even respect that I paid a premium for two top of the line smartphones?
I am in your exact same boat, Droid 1 and all. They have sent me a replacement and I told them that if it doesn't work then they will get me a discount on a new phone, i.e. another upgrade (since I wasted mine on this piece of trash) or I will leave Verizon.
Yeah the screeching is awesome isn't it? Mine does that too. Does verizon even read the forums? Do they even care? Mind is blown.
Yeah it didn't address any problems on my phone.
Their customer service certainly doesn't seem to care. Its incredibly insulting that Tier 2 Tech Support pretends that these are not known issues on the device. Same goes for the act Customer Service puts on that their hands are tied on offering you a different phone. I even offered to pay the two year rate, even though I don't feel that I should have to since I was sold a defective product. Btw, I also get the screeching from the handset mid-call.
I wonder what it will take before they honor the products they sell... BBB complaints? FCC complaints? A class action lawsuit?
First two maybe, but remember you agreed to individual arbitration in your contract. No class actions suits anymore since when the go bad, they go bad. Much easier for them to drag their heels through arbitration on a one on one basis than actually address any issues on a class basis.
Ms. Verizon CS:
"WiFi being ON, even when not connected to a network, may impact the Verizon signal from coming through."
Please give me a logical/technical explanation as to how that is possible.
From my experience, Verizon Samsung CDMA smartphone radio is the worst in the industry. This topic just reminds me of the same radio fiasco with the Fascinate as well as the Charge and Nexus.
The screeching, chopped conversation issue is NOTHING NEW to Verizon's Samsung smartphones. At this point, here is my advice - just be prepared for the following:
1. False promise of "the next update with address the call quality issue" over and over and over again.
2. Recertified (but still defective) replacements offered by TECHNOLOGICALLY CLUELESS reps. Remember this: the ONLY people you get to talk to about your issues/problems are SALES PEOPLE, even if they have the CSR labels, and every minute they are talking to you about your issue is a MINUTE WASTED by not selling.
3. Pressure to upgrade once you have ANY line in your account is eligible.
Not one bit! My Galaxy Nexus is by far one of the worst phones you have ever put out and without a battery manager installed you might as well leave it plugged into the wall!!!!! As for the signal strength of this phone I'd rather have my glitchy Droid X2 back......
I have a Galaxy Nexus. This is my 2nd one, a replacement to the one I lost. My original one had occasional signal issues - annoying but tolerable after an update. This replacement one is a different story. It received the 4.0.4 update the other day. Great! So I thought.
It seems as if everytime I unlock the phone the signal gets lost. My patience is starting to get lost with it. It's unfortunate because other than this signal issue, I like the phone and I like Verizon's coverage. However, if this isn't fixed soon, I'll be on the market for a different phone and maybe a different carrier.

As for your battery, I use JuiceDefender, if I don't have it enabled, I go to sleep w/ it fully charged and wake up w/ it 30-40%. It's usually at 80% w/ Juice Defender in the first setting, I've not used extreme or custom. There are other batter saver apps out there also.
:smileysad: No it did not fix my phone, some phones have been rumored to have defective antenna parts , but who knows, I am on my third Samsung Galaxy S III and frankly I have been beat up by Verizon over this matter to the point of packing and moving on. Oh, Well I will stop venting , but crap dropped call after dropped call after dropped call, is absolutely frustrating and costly when your of a business call. Also, since the update I have had many apps crash on me, I might have to do another hard reset to straighten the phone out, I don't know but something has to be done about this , it has driven me crazy!
For what its worth I want to update my previous post.
I am now on my 3rd replacement phone. It is now screeching painfully every few calls and But my warranty period is up...
I feel cheated. I paid a premium price for a phone that won't even make 1/2 the contract life and Verizon could care less. Not doubt they can't wait to charge me and upgrade fee on my next device so they can keep on cheating me!
