Can text messages get crossed up?

I received a text message from a friends number yesterday, it did not make sense and by the description in the text, this was definitely not my friend sending it. My friend later confirmed he did not send this text nor type it up to anyone else. Is it possible for texts to get crossed somehow? This is rather puzzling?? has anyone had this type of issue?

There has been issues with messages being sent to wrong number but it usually was sent from the device...   I guess there is a possibility of this happening under other situations because the data is being sent across the airwaves but I haven't heard of this so far..

Since it only happened once, it may have been just a fluke..
