Amazon is an indirect retailer. They purchase phones from VZW and sell them independantly. If Amazon or any other indirect retailer deciedes to sell a device at a cheaper rate that is entirley up to them. They sell the devices from their own stock and they are the ones who have to recoup the loses from selling the device that cheap.
Amazon also has additional terms and Conditions when you purchase a phone from them. One of them might be you can't make any changes on your account for a specified time frame after the purchase. It helps to read the fine print.
