Update killed my Droid X - Bootloader Error

Update was pushed to my phone by...???? Can't get a straight answer from Verizon or Motorola, but what I do know is the year old phone was in perfect working order before the update, now it is dead and I have to buy a new device. From what I can tell, this has been happening since 2010 (see copy of another post below) to users. That is the EXACT error I received on my Droid X last evening - over 2 years later. Some are able to factory reset with help from the Verizon Store, most are not. The question is how much liability does Motorola and/or Verizon have for pushing updates that are known to kill the device and force the user into a new purchase? I have also heard there are rumblings of a class action lawsuit.

The same thing happened to my phone this morning. No luck with factory reset. I've already visited the Verizon store and bought a new phone, but now that I know that I'm not the only one and that this problem has been going on for a while, I'm rather upset about it.

Looks like Verizon/Motorola killed our phones with a bad update. The million dollar question is what will they do about it?

Looks like this is their way to FORCE us to upgrade or in My case used My 50.00 credit to have the Samsung Stratosphere sent to Me. I find it VERY SHADY that a company based upgrade that you really have NO choice in taking or not to get more Money off us.

Same thing happened to me today. I went into the Verizon store and although they weren't able to fix it, they did order me a replacement phone and are over-nighting the phone to my house. They did this for free despite the fact that my phone was out of warranty. According to the people at the Verizon store this was a Motorola issue and that Motorola is currently listing this issue as "under investigation".

Same thing happened to my Droid X today. I seriously hope they fix this soon or tell us how to fix it... maybe it's finally time to go with iPhone.

Thank you hurna089 for your post. I called Verizon and they are sending me out a replacement phone (yes, my warranty was also expired.)

I encourage everyone else to call Verizon and ask for replacement.

same exact error on my DroidX. verizon wireless told me: "its a software issue. phone is dead. nothing we can do". lovely. only a year old and was working fine before this update.

Killed my Droid X too. coupled with the upcoming upgrade fee and "passing the buck" customer service,

a carrier switch is likely. Husband's Droid X will now have to permanently postpone the "update" to avoid

bricking it.

This program update that was forced onto my Droid X killed my fone today, too. I have no idea if it was a Verizon/Motorola update or if it was a virus? I am now left with a paperweight that has the same error message as what everyone else above has reported. Verizon is over-nighting a Droid X2 or 2X or whatever its called.

On Mine it is 4.5.621.MB810 Android Version 2.3.4

good news, if this happened to you, your phone is not bricked. ( this happened to me and I got my droid x back up and going) The boot loader is OK, so you can load a new O/S from your computer. This is what I did - I basically followed the directions from the link below:

You have to download a program to your computer so you can flash the firmware to your phone (RSD lite 4.8), the firmware itself (VRZ_MB810_2.3.34_1FF_01.sbf), and make sure the drivers for the phone are on your computer if not already.

Just follow the directions in the video, and you phone will be back up. The only downside is that the phone will be reset, so you will loose all your saved data and programs that are not on your card.

I'm not sure what O/S I had when it messed up. I was at work when my phone said an update was available. I just hit "yes" and put the phone back in my belt clip. Later, when I looked at my phone, it was on the bootloader screen, with the white text. Removing the battery did not help.

When I got home, I found the link I posted above, followed the direction , and it got my phone to Android 4.5.605. I then used the phone to update thru two firmware versions, and ended up with 4.5.621. This seems to be working good now.

I wonder if the original firmware update was indeed 4.5.621, and it conflicted with a 3rd party program my phone, causing the issue?

Ok the first one was a Update that was Released back in the Summer 2011 an the one you got Last is the Current one. That every one should Running Now! If not they need to get it..

Update killed my phone last night. It's dead. I haven't been to Verizon yet. If they can't/won't fix or replace it then I say it's class action lawsuit time, and the company needs to be held accountable for pushing out an update that crashes these phones and clearly forces people to buy a new phone.

I'm glad you were able to fix your phone, but Verizon's customers should not have to fix their own phones. The point is that Verizon should offer to make this right. I've already purchased a new phone, but I'll be calling Verizon today to express my dissatisfaction.

Verizon would not do this if they know that it would cause a issuse. There is no point in causing that much blow back. Since you're so grumpy though maybe this will make your day a little better. Nexus for $50 on Amazon.

Verizon is well aware of the issue. I went to two different Verizon stores

and both reps told me they see it on a regular basis. In fact the manager

of the second store I visited stated when they had techs in the stores

SEVERAL years ago they were still able to fix the problem with Motorola

firmware software, but it was wiped clean from the store PC¹s when they went

to no techs in the retail stores. The manager also stated some stores have

employees who have been working there a long time and know how to get access

to it and still help customers, but his store did not.

An update to my issue, when my wife got home from work I finally had a phone to use. I called Verizon, they they are sending me a phone with no hassle. The person asked a few quick questions and that was it, no troubleshooting either. They must have obviously received a few complaints already and were aware of the issue. They were going to send it USPS which would take 5-7 days to arrive. Next day shipping was $12.99. I told the person at Verizon I needed my phone bad because it was used as a business phone and she sent it over night and waived the fee.I can't remember what the warranty time is on my Droid X, but I've had it about 9 months old. I was pleasantly surprised at the ease of solving the problem.

Got the update yesterday and my phone was immediately useless. It does not do anything beyond the unlock screen. It hasn't been rooted at all. Total nightmare! I not have a heavy, useless paperweight!

I hope someone at Verizon sees this and e-mails me, because I certainly can't call customer service or go to a store during work to try and fix it!!! Please help!

Did you make sure to have at least 50% battery charge before accepting the update?

For me, I don't know what the battery level was when the update was forced. Verizon did overnight night me the Droid X2 to replace it, which I like much more than the Droid X. It is faster and it has a couple newer features. Still, I thought it was shady that the update just pops up out of nowhere and it only gave me 15 seconds to decide if I wanted to accept it or be reminded later. I couldn't write down anything about this update request that quickly...so that I could google it. When I got too busy at work, the update was forced before I could catch it. I'm okay with my replacement, and Verizon says it won't affect my upgrade in July!

I called customer service yesterday, and the lady I spoke with was very sympathetic. Since I had already bought a new phone, she credited some $ back to my account. I'm fairly happy now, but I probably would handle things differently if I could go back to Tuesday morning when this all started.

For any of you who are going to upgrade early because of this, don't let them charge you the $20 upgrade fee. It's not your fault you're having to upgrade.

The same thing happened to my Droid X on Tuesday. I clicked "to remind me later" and then it just went ahead and updated the software and when I tried to use it about an hour later, NOTHING!!!! So I called Verizon and the rep. was very helpful but couldn't do anything for me and suggested that I go to a Verizon Store to see if they could do anything more. So, my husband and I had to drive about 40 miles to our nearest store the next morning. When we walked in the rep. asked what was wrong I told him and he immediatley said, "it's dead". Said he would try to "flash it", but when he went to do it, he just turned back around and said "that he feels generous today" and ordered me a replacement. My warranty was up 16 days earlier also. After reading all of these same type of complaints, I agree with some of the other people, this ISN'T RIGHT THAT VERIZON SEEMS TO BE FORCING PEOPLE TO UPGRADE OR PURCHASE NEW PHONES!!!!!! In my case, I was "given" a Droid X2 but others are spending money that they shouldn't have to. Just not right!!!!!!!

I got an update on my phone on the 18th and I just kept putting it off due to I was traveling and did not have a full battery. when i got home on the 19th battery full and had time for it to do its thing I said ok. I am not very observant so do not remember the version of the update. It did its thing and I did not have a problem on my droid x. So it is not happening to everyone. I feel for those it has happened to.

3. When the solution is "We broke your phone, so here you go, we are going to COMPLETELY ERASE ALL OF THE DATA ON IT", that's an even WORSE "solution".

I have had system updates on my phones that clearly state in the message that the battery should be 50% full or more. Even then I plug in the phone for the update. I have not "bricked" a phone yet when doing an update or more.

So stupid me doesn't Google the update to see that it was a HOT MESS. So my Droid X which was fully functioning until about 3 hours ago is now just a paperweight. And all they tell me is that I have to wait until Tuesday, which would be fine, if I had access to another phone, but I don't. So I got an iPhone, which a really didn't want. I just want my phone functioning again. Verizon and Motorola are going to hear about it from me.

Same issue...update killed my perfectly good Droid X. It appears as though their getting used to this at the Verizon store, though. When I went in and told them an update killed my phone, they guy just nodded, asked for my phone number, and told me a new phone (same model, not refurbished) would be shipped overnight. It seems they have these replacement phones ready to send out, since there have been so many issues. Sheesh.

I accepted the OTA last night before bed and had the same issue on my DroidX this morning when I woke up. Called tech support, went through the usual reset procedures, escalated the call to level 2 TS and was told I have to buy a new or CPO phone because it's out of warranty and I'm not due for an upgrade until June.

I insisted that this shouldn't be my problem since I didn't do anything to damage the phone; that the OTA was the obvious culprit and that it's well documented on Verizon's own community forum.

The guy actually said to me, "Yes, I understand it was the OTA, but you are in a contract with us and it's a reciprocal relationship where you have certain responsibilities as the customer." Wow.

Long story short, I asked to get bumped to a manager and was told she wasn't available. When I calmly and professionally stated that I would never renew my contract in June if this issue wasn't fixed with little to no out of pocket expense to me, the manager miraculously appeared from the 6AM meeting she was in. Then the TS guy said after the fact said that this is indeed a known issue and it was no action on my part that bricked the phone.

As a courtesy they will ship me a CPO DroidX overnight free of charge.

I was really hoping to get a X2 like some of the lucky folks before me, but I'm happy the issue is being taken care of. On the other hand, why did it have to get uncomfortable? Why did they make me throw out the old "I'll take my business elsewhere" cliche?

To all of you who are experiencing this, don't take no for an answer. Be patient, polite, and insistent and remind them that this is indeed a well known issue. You'll probably get taken care of.

I've got the latest update installed, and I didn't have a problem with the Bootloader error. However, my phone now freezes regularly. I have to pull the battery to reset it. The status light is still flashing, but I can't turn it back on unless I pull the battery. I ended up getting up 40 minutes late this morning because it froze during the night and my alarm didn't go off.

Anyone else having this issue after the update?

Ok. It is June 10, 2012 and this problem still exists from this original post which started in 2010. My phone automatically accepted the downloand and now its dead like all of the others. I am going to call Verizon tomorrow to try to get some assistance. Wish me luck because I (like many of you) am not happy about this!

I was provided a replacement phone although I'm not happy that 1) I had to pay for the shipping of the phone, 2) I was provided a refurbished phone, and 3) that they sent me the same phone. This is the second time a software update has affected my phone and I'm very unhappy with it. Well the lady on the phone was very cordial she made it very clear that sending me a different phone was not an option. I I'm still relatively new to verizon but I can't say that I'm all together happy with how they handled the last 2 situations. I may be looking for another carrier at the end of my 2 year contract. I understand but this is " not a verizon issue", i am just disappointed that they wouldn't offer to upgrade my phone due to tje ongoing "software "not malfunctions, which are not my fault either. All in all well the rep was nice, verizon should be taking better care of it customers - especially customers with family plans consisting of 3 phones, and always paying as agreed. I am absolutely at this point hesitant to recommend verizon.

This actually just happened to me about 2 hours ago. I was sleeping and got a phone call. when i tried to answer the phone died. I plugged it in and it sat on the M symbol screen. After battery removal trying to turn it on and off it finally turned on with this same bootloader screen. I really hate verizon anymore.

Hi CGarand, luckily a lot of the content from your phone is stored on your SD Card (memory card) and Google account. If the current device isn't able to be recovered and you obtain a replacement, you can transfer your SD Card which houses your media (pictures, videos, music and ringtones) to the replacement phone. Your contacts could have been backed up by either Backup Assistant or Google Contacts depending on the setting you selected for your phone. Check www.vzw.com/backupassistant and click "Manage Conacts" to view if they're stored here. You can also check www.google.com/contacts to see if they're saved in this area. You can even resend the applications you'd previously downloaded without having to search for them all on the Google Play store. Just visit play.google.com and sign in to your Google account to view all the applications. Let us know if there's anything else we can assist with.

Hi everyone:

I am experiencing the same exact problem!

The day before yesterday the phone was powered off when I woke up even though I leave it on overnight. I tried to turn it on, but does not get past a black screen with a red and white Motorola logo - as shown by the attached picture.

I've tried everything - both a soft reboot and a master reset, by either pressing and holding the home button and the power button or by pressing and holding the volume keys and the power button - but nothing works. The phone is in perfect condition – no physical or water damage.

I’ve come across the following threads, which describe same exact problem, where phones that are perfectly fine all of a sudden doesn't turn on.
