Yay FP5 will be rolling out within the week. This is just a minor bug fixer though ;(
Hopefully it improves the phones overall speed/performance and gets rid of some bloat and fixes the pop/static noise for good while on calls :smileyhappy:

I seriously doubt it will remove any bloatware.
@ PJNC284, that link (as of this posting), is linked to their FP1 update (which I heard they reverted that page since it still contained FP1 update info, and nothing regarding FP5, so not your fault, just informing others that may wonder what's going when they click on the link and see FP1).
hmm...they must've changed it as it was definitely showing FP5 when I posted. http://www.droid-life.com/2012/07/31/droid-charge-receiving-minor-update-to-fp5/ is what it should show. Upon further inspection, the FP5 one seems to show the same changelog as the one for FP1 (http://www.phonedog.com/2012/03/20/samsung-droid-charge-fp1-update-coming-soon-packs-in-verizon-remote-diagnostics-tool/) so not sure what that's about.
agreed PJNC.
I'm guessing that they jumped the gun too soon perhaps on the posting and failed to adjust the change log? Who knows. I guess we will see if anyone gets that "update available"
The reason I was thinking that this new update may remove some bloatware is because if you look at what is supposed to be the changelog for the "FP5" firmware, it stats that "The Bitbop preloaded app has been removed from the device", which was not bulleted on the FP1 Changelog, so hopefully they also removed a few more junk preloaded apps, and also it now states on the FP5 changelog "Complete calls successfully with improved call clarity" where the FP1 changelog only stated "Complete calls without experiencing choppy audio, clicking noises and or one-way audio noises". So hopefully that means they actually fixed it this time with new radios, hopefully a new kernel too I would love it if they changed the brown/orange theme to something else too :smileyhappy: Black/Blue would be great! It is obvious though that someone screwed up and jumped the gun and did not list everything that the FP5 update will include and they are reworking a new one to post, and hopefully it is a nice update, it's been 4-5 months now without anything, and there are still issues to be worked on.
understood - but I can't believe anything that was on that changelog, as they removed it. so who knows what else is wrong. regarding the theme, do you mean something like this:
heck yea! that's nice! def want mine like that! :smileyhappy:
Thats an awesome theme! Yea just like that lol. Wish this new update would roll out...guess there were problems with it....
The device support page once again shows the FP5 update is coming soon.
Anyone recieve this update yet?
one person I know got it. I'm going to see if I can force it by adding it to my sdcard and see if shows up via recovery.
Got it Wednesday before lunch... took about 6 minutes. No probs yet, but I did trash my WeatherBug widget because of the warning. After, I put it back on and it works fine.
That page says "software update, i510.FP5" When I look at my "About phone", which has firmware 2.3.6, the only listings that have "FP" anywhere in the version are Baseband, Kernal, and Build. These all say "....FP1". Does the fact that my phone says FP1 mean that I have somehow not received updates FP2, FP3, and FP4? Or did Verizon jump from FP1 to FP5?
This thread appears to be the ONLY hit for "i510.FP5" on verizonwireless.com. I just got notified about 30 mins ago of the update and yes WTTTT, you currently have FP1 and FW version 2.3.6. -- and this new update will upgrade you to FP5 and some unknown, newer FW version.
And no WTTTT, you didn't miss any versions (FP2...FP4) because I too never got notifications for any intermediate updates. In my 10 years experience in IT, skipped versions of software/firmware usually happen due to buggy software that they do NOT want to release to the public.
I'm going to delay installing this upgrade AS LONG AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE because (a) I have an ongoing tech support case open dealing with an intermittent "not receiving texts" -issue (which I'm told is specific to *some* Samsung Droid Charges..), and (b) this update, based upon the VzW-provided description, is useless (other than for troubleshooting with VzW). I have no voice quality issues now (since VzW sent me another Charge..but I do now have this new text'ing issue...), and the update seems particularly useless, similar to the previous update several months ago (January-ish??).
I wish Android/VzW didn't harangue users EVERY 30 MINS to install this update....talk about harrassment. It SHOULD be at a more reasonable frequency, like once or twice a day.

Thanks for that clarification. I don't have to deal with the nags as so far I have not received notification of the update. Even manually checking it says I am up to date.
Talk about nagging though.... I have another thread discussing the update nags for all the useless bloat apps installed by Verizon on this phone. Now that is real hassle as they can not be updated automatically but have to be dealt with manually one by one.
I think your plan to delay is a good one for a while at least to see what others say about this update. In the end though, I will probably do it even though my phone works fine as it is. Even if you don't want the update, I don't see any way to stop the popups prompting you to install it and those are probably more of a hassle to deal with than going through the update process.
In my previous post I fixed the middle of the FW version -- oops. I completely agree with you -- other than getting nagged about updating bloat apps. All that ever happens on my phone is I have EVERY APP set to "manually update" (...I feel old as sea salt here..been in the computer industry too long..) so any bloatware that "needs" updating is in a list of many apps "needing" updating; I just ignore it. I never get any pop-ups/annoyances so out of sight, out of mind.
I wish someone would come out with an app to prevent the harassing pop-ups...
Does anybody know what the update to the UI is? I've gotten the update, but don't see any visible difference. From what I gather, whatever the change is, it has to do with Apple's lawsuit. I just haven't seen any difference to know what was changed. One piece of bloatware gone, though. That can't be all bad.
This is a very minor update, got it on my phone andmy wifes wednesday around 3am. The phone boots up faster and feels a bit smoother. It only took a few minutes to download and is working well on our charge's. Hopefully the static popping during calls is fixed this time....so far so good. :smileyhappy:
Verizon/Samsung never released a FP2, FP3, or FP4. If you have FP5, you are current on software :smileyhappy:
just got the update, and this FP5 kernel has shown considerable positive improvement over FP1 in terms of keeping a 4G connection. for example, on the day prior, I was in an area where I rarely maintained a 4G connection - in fact, that area would cause my phone to freeze a lot when switching back and forth between 3G/4G to the point where the battery was draining quite a bit. this was consistent over several months.
now with FP5, that area not only maintains a steady 4G signal, but a very strong signal as well.
just my experience though. also, my phone is running much smoother than before.
Has anyone else noticed significant battery improvement? I think the kernel is doing a better job with the cell standby, thereby improving battery life.
Ever since the FP5 update on my Charge the 4G signal is improved. However, where the phone used to somewhat switch between networks (4G<>3G<>1x) it just stays in 4G until there is no signal. I have started missing calls in my home because of this and I still have to move around. It is almost like the network options are LTE or CDMA now instead of LTE/CDMA or CDMA.
Hello to you Lilc73!Home is where the heart is and I want you to get calls there too! I dove into any recorded Voice concerns since FP5 came out and I only found one recorded report! The great news is this isn't a widely spread issue, yet it doesn't mean you're still not experiencing it! We can get this fixed. My first question revolves around applications. Do you have any Task Killers, Antiviruses, or Battery Savers? These types of apps tend to cause system instability which could result in the phone connectivity not responding properly. If you do I would recommend uninstalling them and rebooting! Now you mentioned this happens at home. Have you noticed the same results anywhere else? What zip code do you live in?Keep me posted! Thanks, MelissaM_VZWFollow us on Twitter @vzwsupport
I had AVG antivirus on the phone and now have removed it. I will have to see how that affects the issue over time. As for any other places I am usually not there long enough to experience any switching issues. There are some areas where it is already in 3G or no service at all but that is a different problem altogether.
Thank you so much for the update Lilc73!I had the exact same app and even after I removed it I was still running into a couple of snags. Eventually I decided to Hard Reset my phone. If you notice it's still happening, ensure your information is backed up and follow these steps: http://support.verizonwireless.com/clc/devices/knowledge_base.html?id=42407Let us know how this goes! Thanks, MelissaM_VZWFollow us on Twitter @vzwsupport
