The wait for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus Android 4.1 update release date has begun and I hope it will end soon.
And so it has begun...
Twas bound to happen. There's already a thread for jellybean on the GSIII and it's only been publicly available for a day.
Is this going to be another fiasco like the 4.0.4 update? You think Verizon would have learned their lesson by now ...
I just got JB on my GSM Nexus and it is nice! I'm not giving my final verdict yet because I haven't finished testing it yet.
I hope your wait isn't long!
I hope our wait isn't long too. One would think that Verizon wouldn't want, and by action encourage, a bad reputation on something that should be pretty simple for them.
Still hopeful...
Yes, Hello... I'd like my Jelly Bean now PLEASE....
Of course it begins. The Nexus is a Google Experience phone and is supposed to be subject to updates as quickly as they're released. As we know, VZW delays the update due to their internal testing. It's a mistake to believe people aren't anxious to receive OS updates in a timely manner - especially when that's one of the main reasons people bought a Nexus. So yes, it begins, as it should!
Yes, Yesterday I "Asked Politely" for OS Update....Today, I'll ask politely again, I WANT MY 4.1 JB UPDATE........... NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! please...
uhm...you may want to re-read that contract. No part of the contract requires Verizon to provide a single update. Any updates they do provide is a privilege, not a right.
Anyone had any "Force stop" luck?
if it is going to fix my self mute and drop calls I am all for it.
Does anyone know if the JB ota will help with all the effed up nexus signal issues? I am now on my 6th phone from Verizon (3 razrs that were wrongly sent, and 3 Gnex) and 90% of all my calls drop, yet I cant get them to fully admit that there is a issue- even when my calls disconnect while speaking with them.
Ive had this issue with them when I was in Florida, on a cruise in the Caribbean, and here in my house in GA.
I find it so odd that somehow its only my phones that are the issue- none of my family members have problems, nor do my neighbor.
Now it just seems like I have a fricken paperweight that i paid hundreds of dollars for
I dont want a different phone- I want my nexus to work. Thats why I got a nexus to begin with.
/sigh
They know but don't want to admit it. I went into a different verizon store and before i even said what my issue is I said "i have a Nexus" and he said "I really hate that phone" so they know
Wow... I've had a GNex since December, and I've never had a problem with signal, making calls, and such. I live in rural South Georgia and even before 4.0.4 got pushed out, I never had a problem.
I would still like JellyBean though... sooner rather than later.
I just compiled it myself and installed it on my phone. I didn't bother to wait It's a Nexus.
Good for you, Tidbits. I'll give Verizon a little longer to push it out, mainly because I've got finals coming up and don't have the time to play with my phone too much. However, if they haven't pushed it out by the time I get done with school it'll be <Deleted per the .>. Seriously makes me less likely to re-up a contract with Verizon in the future though...

I would but I just dont know what to do. I dont want to mess it up and then have no one to blame (since it voids warrenty)
When I bought this phone, I didnt know about the bootloader and such - I never thought I would need to even think about it, after all, I just wanted a phone that looked cool, and works.
Had a GNex in Korea- never had any issues.
ugh I'm so sick of this.
This will be a test for me to stay with Verizon. If the JB update is released in a week, I'm staying. If it doesn't, I'm getting the GSM Nexus from Google and jumping ship when my contract is up. Too bad Google doesn't have the pull that Apple has on carriers.
Verizon, if you're reading this, please push the update soon! I want my LTE and JB, it's a Nexus after all.
Personally, the coverage a carrier offers is far more important to me than ice cream or candy. I guess it's one of the downsides to living in a relatively rural area.
Not even the Timely Updates Agreement, announced at Google I/O 2011, is any sort of legal obligation for software updates.
Timely is subjective. The promise is from Google and not the actually manufacturers or carriers. When it comes to software it is never timely.
Maybe we'll see it in September.
Wrong. BOTH the carriers AND the manufacturers made the agreement with Google. And timely is NOT subjective, since they define it in the agreement as being any updates to the OS released in the first eighteen months of a device's availability, so long as the hardware can support it. It's not legally-binding, obviously, but they're all on the record as having agreed to it.
Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/10/google-partners-with-oems-and-carriers-to-guarantee-android-upda/
Sorry Engadget really?
Look of the definition of timely, and understand the upgrade process. If it takes Google 8 months to bring out an update(Jellybean) that only gives you 1 update for every device within that 18 months. See the trend here? So if a manufacturer takes 6-8 months then that is TIMELY. If they do it before that then it's exceptional.
For all of you impatient people out there. Here are the binaries...go get if you want.

The reason it took so long for 4.0.4 was that Google and Verizon didn't have an AOSP. Now that they have renewed it, 4.1 should roll out quicker for Verizon phones. The orientation sensor and the CDMA/LTE stuff are proprietary. Without the AOSP, Google just couldn't arbitrarily send out updates. Before whining and complaining, you should do this little thing called RESEARCH..
I remember a time where the Nexus S 4G got 3 updates that the Nexus S didn't... So Google isn't all that "timely" themselves.
If people would actually pay attention. The GSM and the CDMA/LTE versions got 4.0.4 around the same time. The CDMA/LTE version got 4.0.2 before the GSM version and not all of the GSM version phones got that update.
4.0.3 was never released at all.
Obtw, if you think Verizon will be slow...try asking a Sprint Nexus owner. The AOSP does not include Sprint.
After sending the obligatory "When are we getting the update" emails. I received this response. I think I might have hit a nerve with the last email. I think "George" is getting tired of me.
<Email address removed per the .>
Good evening, Randy.
This is George and I do not use excuses. I use truth. I know you are not alone in feeling that Verizon is "dragging their feet" on this update to the software. I have no specific date for release nor would I try to invent one just to lead you on. You are not asking for dismissive answers.
HSPA + is different from LTE/CDMA (Verizon's network), so the update available to one carrier will not necessarily work on another. That's it, that's the simple truth.
The same model phone needs one type of programming to work on HSPA+ and another type to work on LTE/CDMA. Therefore, any software update for an Android phone will need input from the manufacturer, Google, and the carrier.
I will not pretend to know which, if any, of those three parties are "dragging their feet", Randy. Please check for the new software directly from your phone at your convenience so that you will be one of the first to get it when it becomes available.
Sincerely,
George

Testing out new O.S's is no simple process is there is alot at stake given that there are alot of "player's" involved in the devolopement of a smart device and so many variables that could wind up making all software and hardware dev's and ultimately Verizon all look back, so pushing out software that instructs hardware before it is throughly tested out is reckless, irresponsible and could cause collateral damage and have serious cost. I am not for or against Verizon nor do I work for them. I just come from the computer tech support end and know what it feels like when buggy software gets put onto a computer that was pushed out too soon. PS: don't punish the support for not giving a timetable for the JB rollout. You are a sucker for all the media hype. "Like butter", Google I will believe it.... when I see it.
JB is a vast improvement overall to ICS. Been using since Google I/O and then later compiling from source. Overall it's worth the wait for it. People still need to relax it will come. The benefit of a Nexus device if you don't want to wait you don't have to compared to other devices out there.
You may not believe it when I say it, but it is "like butter" compared to other iterations of Android. It's more that it's faster but yes, it's also smoother. I haven't read a review yet (from real people, not bloggers) that complained that Project Butter wasn't all that it was cracked up to be.
I received the Nexus 7 yesterday and jelly bean is fantastic. The OS feels much more polished than ICS. Google now, voice search, and smooth like butter really works well. I can't wait until our Verizon Galaxy Nexus gets 4.1.1.
I'm seriously on my last leg with Verizon Wireless. I've received nothing but horrible service from their Call Centers, terrible experiences with their signal and stability, and the time it takes them to release updates is just annoying to say the least. This is seriously the worst carrier experience I've ever had.
That being said I'm probably going to jump to T-Mobile with a GSM device and warn all of my friends and colleagues away from this money sink of a carrier.
http://blogs.computerworld.com/smartphones/20706/verizon-galaxy-nexus
I don't understand why Verizon, Google, and Samsung couldn't plan it so that all Nexus phones get the update at the same time. There's no reason not to do this. Don't buy into the different radios, CDMA, LTE, etc. It's just poor planning skills on all parties involved.
Anybody who thinks that would work really needs to get a clue. If Google and Verizon were to upgrade EVERY Nexus phone at the same time, it would seriously degrade network performance at best and completely drop whole networks at worst. Remember, they have other customers to take care of, not just their Nexus users. That would serious impact not on just individuals and businesses, but emergency services as well. What would happen if somebody is trying to make a 911 call and cant' because YOU wanted your OTA upgrade right now and that it should be pumped to every phone at once?
If you're right, why is it that Apple can get updates out on almost every compatible iPhone at the same time? If Verizon doesn't want the network to be impacted, force the update via WiFi. Once again, don't buy into the carriers claims. It's poor planning and quite frankly, it's not on their priority list. Most customers don't care about ICS, Jelly Bean, and IOS 6. The only reason why Apple can push updates at the same time is because of agreements between carriers. Obviously, Samsung and Google didn't force the issue with Verizon and Sprint, otherwise we wouldn't be having this discussion.
Yeah I am doing the exact same thing and encouraging others to do the same. Time to speak with our wallets. Sure they get a one time termination fee, but if I go back to TMobile with a $30 prepaid plan...I save thousands per year!
How many iPhones are there in comparison to Android phones? Furthermore, how many different versions of Android are out there?
Obtw. Apple doesn't pump its updates out to everybody at once. Again, it is the carriers that do it; and they push the OTA in batches. The last time I checked, Apple doesn't provide cell phone service...yet.
But go ahead and jump ship if you like. I saw all of this when 4.0.4 rolled out...and it still just as humorous to watch.
It is the American way..."I want my stuff immediately, if not sooner!"
I think a little patience might be a good thing for everybody here. We live in such a I WANT IT NOW society. And honestly it is just not that easy a lot of the time. Verizon is dealing with MILLIONS of customers and many different types of phones. A variety of issues most likely prevent this being a something that can be easily done.
Yeah, I want the Jellybean update just like everybody else. But my Nexus is working just fine with the 4.0.4 update. It's not like my phone will not function. So I can wait. We will get the update soon enough.
Well, I just found a little item that I hadn't seen, it's from Androidandme posted a day after 4.1 source code was posted by Google. On July 10th they wrote these words.
"Jelly Bean, was made available in the Android Open Source Project. But that’s not all that happened. Along with the introduction of Android 4.1, the Verizon Galaxy Nexus LTE earned back its supported title in the AOSP.
That should mean at least a somewhat shorter wait for the OTA.
Google does indeed have the binaries for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus they are labled.
Well I think this article pretty well sums it up. If you are looking for the so called TOTAL Android experience then VZW isn't the place to be. I think most of us feel misled as to how the update process SHOULD or SHOULD'VE go/gone. Yeah VZW has millions of phones, but outta all of Android only 18% are running ICS which in turn means that less than that are Nexus devices so why can't they update them like they do iphones? Because Apple makes the carriers bow down to them and Google plays Mr. Nice Guy when they should grow a pair. I like my phone and I got VZW for the coverage. To me that is more important then being the first to get an update. I am disappointed with VZW but being that COVERAGE is most important to me I won't fret..
Complaining on a customer peer to peer forum is going to help your cause, how?
I am happy with the phone as it is now. I will wait until the update is approved. If I wasn't, I wouldn't be here complaining. I would be elsewhere voiding the warranty I don't even have on my second hand Nexus.
pay $99 and join the ADC. You will find out how and why they seem to update better. Apple spends months to even deliver a basic update unless it's a basic security fix. It seems they are delivering updates all at the same time because Apple holds updates until all is ready at the same time.
When I purchased my phone at the Verizon Wireless store, (switched from AT&T), I was verbally told by the manager of that store that since the Google Nexus was a "pure Google phone" that I would receive updates directly from Google as soon as the updates were available. This was stated in the presence of two witnesses. I would call that a "verbal contract" and can hold, if not Verizon at least the store manager, to that contract.

In a perfect world Verizon, Google and Sammy would have come together to provide you with the perfect Nexus experience…they didn’t. Should you have to manipulate your phone to get that experience? No! However, if the manufacturers cannot, will not or are too slow to deliver for you, take matters into your own hands. You don’t have to be a programmer. My 12 year old daughter can do it because she can follow simple instructions and execute a few key strokes. I’ve been running Jelly Bean since the day after it was released at Google I/O and am now on Vicious Jelly Bean v5. It is considerably better than ICS. It is stable and it does EVERYTHING I want a phone to do and much more. So you can either take matters into your own hands and fix the problem or you can continue to come back to an online forum everyday and complain about how Verizon, Google and Sammy are screwing you over and never come any closer to being happy with your phone.
I sure hope Verizon pushes the Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) software update before August. I switched from AT&T because I was told by the Verizon salesperson that Verizon works directly with Google and they should be the first to get the updates on this "pure Google" phone. Now I've discovered that AT&T is rolling out Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) HSPA+ version to its customer NOW! If I do not have Android 4.1 by August 1st, I'm going BACK TO AT&T to get the HSPA+ version! And I will be AT&T's BIGGEST spokesperson for comparison between service from AT&T and Verizon because I NEVER had this problem with AT&T!
AT&T doesn't sell the GSM version of the Galaxy Nexus. You can purchase it directly from the Play Store. AT&T doesn't support the GSM version for hardware and software. AT&T only can provide the cellular service.
While I am disappointed that I must wait for this update, I understand that Verizon must do their testing and make changes to the software, like blocking Google Wallet (okay, that part is actually unacceptable). In the meantime, I can brush up on the new features with my brother's GSM Galaxy Nexus in preparation, but it will be less understandable after a month passes.
That was my understanding when I bought my Galaxy Nexus. Had I known then what I know now I would have waited for Google to release their GSM phones and gone to TMo.
In a way though I blame Google for not being more stern with Verizon. They should have never agreed to let Verizon add to the Nexus experience. And by add I mean take away. Apple doesn't let this happen with the iPhone. Google should have the same stance when it comes to the Nexus.
Well, if Verizon were a bit more open with its customers as to WHY there is a delay, people wouldn’t have to GUESS why it takes so damn long, now would they. Also, it isn’t “whining” to complain about someone not providing the information we are entitled to regarding purchases made from their company. It is the companies RESPONIBILITY to freely provide this information to us in order to keep us as customers. It’s a little thing called “CUSTOMER SERVICE”. Something many companies, including Verizon, have seem to have forgotten about!
I don't suppose you have instructions on how to turn those binary into a
bona fide package?
>Those instructions if posted are in violation of the VZW Community ToS concerning Rooting/Hacking/Jailbreaking....etc<
Since when are you entitled to anything beyond what is in the contract you
signed? Verizon is a private corporation and they don't have to provide
any information about updates. If you want entitlements go ask the
government.

So sent this to VZW Official Twitter account few days back, "@VerizonWireless Nexus S now getting Jelly Bean. When does the VZW Galaxy Nexus get Jelly Bean? It's about time....#JellyBeanOnVZWGalNex"
Next day morning got a response from @VZWSupport "We haven't announced Jelly Bean for any of our devices. Keep an eye on http://news.vzw.com for the latest. ^MS"
So I replied back..."@VZWSupport, Google already so publicly announced Jelly Bean on all Galaxy Nexus. Does that not cover VZW GalNex?#JellyBeanOnVZWGalNex "
And got another reply back! "Verizon Wireless has not announced availability of Jelly Bean on any devices yet. ^MS"
Finally I replied back..."@VZWSupport #JellyBeanOnVZWGalNexhttps:// plus.google.com/app/plus/mp/766/#~loop:aid=z13xctnbxmiqibjof04chteh4kmhxrar5w00k&view=activity … Isn't VZW GalNex a Nexus experience device? Why hold back an update Google provides?"
Obviously did not get any response back to this! If you all have a twitter account why not ask them? Maybe a lot of folks asking will get us some answers? Please include hash tag (#JellyBeanOnVZWGalNex)
I don't get it. So many of you all are so impatient to get the latest and greatest update for Android. Why do you care? So many of us have had Jellybean on our phones for weeks. If you don't care enough to learn and go through the process of unleashing your phones the latest and greatest update for Android is going to make ZERO difference for you.
Cheers,
~D
Because some of us don't want to void our warranty. When I switched from AT&T to Verizon I was lied to. I was told that because the SGN was a "Pure Google" phone, any updates that came from Google would IMMEDIATELY be pushed down to this phone. Now I'm discovering that was is in fact a LIE. Verizon technicians themselves told me that they would be delaying the Android 4.1 update until they have a chance to test it. Meanwhile, other phone companies (Sprint, T-mobile and unlocked phones) are getting the update. >Rooting comments removed to comply with VZW ToS<
@davegr I don't get it why do you even bother to troll on this thread when you already have Jelly Bean for weeks. I care because I am technical enough to know what Jelly Beans offers. I am particularly interested in Google Now. It's not that I don't care to learn enough to unlock, root and flash my phone, but I would rather not. There are some really great ROMS out there but truth be said, all of them do still have some of their own quirks. Why should I not stay on the Official Google image and keep my warranty. This is after all a Nexus Experience Device. If Galaxy Nexus GSM and Nexus S GSM can get the updates and if Google already announced Jelly Bean with such fan and fare for Galaxy Nexus why should I have to wait ( if you are listening)? Again, I am just voicing my opinion and so are you. Just because we believe in getting the official update, does not mean that we are any lesser or don't know what we are doing. Give everyone some credit, don't assume.
The main reason to get a nexus device is to put unofficial software on it not to have Verizon's crapy bloat that's why the Boot loader is so easily unlocked. If your not going to do this you should have just got a razr . After the data and upgrade fiasco that will be waiting for me after my nexus contract is up (if I want to keep my unlimited data I will need to pay full price for my next phone) I will be moving to sprint or straight talk unless Verizon trays to please me in some way.

Not all versions of the GSM has gotten 4.1.1... A lot of people "hacked" their phones to get it from Google or put it on themselves. Only the ones sold in the play store have gotten the update. All CDMA versions which WORK DIFFERENTLY than GSM on the underlying code has not gotten 4.1.1. As I said BEFORE the CDMA version comes out that there is going to be a difference on the update process. It is how Qualcomm has the code setup which requires multiple signatures to make the radio work correctly. If any of the code is modified well you need signatures again. With the way a lot of people complaining about signal issues and voice dropping on the CDMA/LTE version I can see a delay.
Doing the unspeakable will not void your warranty. If you do it right. But once again you're not technologically inclined like that. So...as I said before...Why do you care? It's like morons who buy a $400 fishing pole to go fishing once a year. Wow, awesome trout you caught there at $400/lb.
Once again, if you do it right, you stay in warranty. But you're technical enough so I'm sure you knew that.
The SGN is a (on the inside) a dev phone. People like tinker with it like it because of that. You don't like to tinker. RAZRs are nice.
Does anyone think that Verizon can/should be taken to court for false advertisment?
After all, when you buy a Nexus phone the understanding is that because is a Nexus, there will be no intervention from the carrier (Pure Android Experience). So since Verizon did not changed the name of the phone it seems to me that they were attracting costumers with the Nexus name. Again, Nexus means no intervention from the carrier or anyone else which is not the case with Verizon's GN... false advertisement...
Its a Nexus...they should not be intervening at all
please do and waste your time and money. :smileyhappy:
Anyone that gets a Nexus phone, expects no intervention from the carrier.
If you say so. Google is the one who made the agreement. They didn't have to, and no one forced them to.
Again Google made that decree and didn't have to make a deal with Verizon. Since they agreed to Verizon's terms Google is to blame for breaking their decree.
That is a patently false statement. I had no expectations of that sort when I bought my GNex. I got it, because it is a really good phone.
Except for Verizon's GNex, all previous models of Nexus are pure Android...Averyone that is interested in the tech world and/or Android/Google know this. I can guarantee that at least 90% of people that gets a Nexus device has that same expectation.
Well I've had a chance to play with Jelly Bean and I think that their are actually more people on it now than their are people waiting on Verizon to take their fat fingers out of the process. I have played with JB, seen what it is like now I'm going back to ICS. Too buggy for me personally..
I am surprised that you think JB is "buggy." Every other source I have
heard from that has tried or is trying JB says just the opposite. Perhaps
you got a bad version, which is why I'm waiting for Verizon's technicians
to work their magic and push out a "tested" version of JB. I do wish they
would hurry up though. I WANT MY JELLYBEAN NOW!!!!

Unless you run the AOSP version(compiled from source with proprietary files) you will get bugs. Most people overlook them because they are true "fanboys" and nothing can go wrong. :smileyhappy:
I compiled my own, and have been using it for weeks, and there are a few bugs which I have sent Google a bug report on. There's even a security flaw, and a corruption bug(won't go into details on this to protect users, but Google knows about them and they are working to fix them and can be hotfixed without a bump in OS version).
I wouldn't classify myself as a fanboy, just someone who wants their phone optimized. I know warts when I see them and I had plenty of them during my days using an Eris and DX1. I've been running Vicious JB on my GNex since the first version was released and while initial versions were a bit buggy, I haven't had ANY issues with the last 3 releases and the latest version has been flawless. It's also fair to note that I really haven't had any issues with my phone since the first OTA back in January, which makes me one of the lucky ones. I say this everytime I post on here, do your homework and take matters into your own hands to make your phone work the way it should.
Well, the first one I had I put it on a replacement that I got about a week ago. Come to find out that the replacement had the IMM76Q instead of the 76K and according to tech support that isn't even out so of course it was crap for holding a signal AT ALL..I changed it to 76K but then I put on CM10 and my location, signal drops have had me irritated to no end. But I must say it was cool to play with for the time being but now I'll just wait..CM10 everything works fine for me except what I mentioned..
