Droid RAZR Maxx no sound problems

I recently had discovered that my new RAZR Maxx was not ringing for incoming calls. Then i noticed that the speakerphone had no sound, alerts weren't sounding, etc..After verifying everything was enabled in the sound settings, I decided to reset to factory defaults to rule out an app causing the issue, and presto...sound started working, Then 1 week later, same issue. Turns out I found several other folks in forums having the same issue and it appears to be a hardware problem. If you rub back and forth just below the speaker on the back side of the phone on the kevlar backing, the sound will return. You have to apply a little pressure, but to my amazement the sound returned. I've had to this twice in the past week and both times this fixed it, so i hope this will help you if your having the same problem. I called Verizon and they are shipping out a replacement which i'm hoping does not have the same feature.

I also had the same issue with the speaker on the Razr Maxx. If took 2 trips to the verizon store to get the issue resolved, but the verizon representative at the store on my second trip was very helpful and ordered another cell phone for me. I am concerned that the work order indicated the replacement phone would be "like new". The phone I had purchased was new and did not work properly. Am I not getting another new phone instead of a used phone? I didn't pay for a used phone, but it seems like that may be what I will end up with.

VERIZON, I ask that you reconsider if you haven't been replacing these faulty phones with new ones and that you start doing so. After all that is what we had bought, new phones.

Well i'm not up with that kind of thing as well an to me they should have kept it 30 days but i Guess an this goes against my Grain i will accept it an Go on..b33 :smileyhappy:

12 year customer with Verizon here. Having the same problem with a month old Droid Razr Maxx. Push on the speaker and it works a little while, then stops again. There is an obvious connection problem and Verizon & Motorola are pretending to not be aware of it. Sent to Motorola with a description of the issue. They sent back stating that couldn't find a problem. Called Verizon. The only thing they are willing to do is send a refurbished phone. Infuriating! A 1 month old phone and they are going to send me an old refurb. Unacceptable.

Well as upset i know you are this is what we Deal it's just like any thing We buy these days that goes to Crap. Case in point My folks have a new 2011 Chevy extended Cab. That Truck in a year has had New new Seat cushions & covers , New Carpet the Glove Compartment Door Replaced and a New Steering Wheel. An were not at all Abusive to the pickup it just that the Materials that they use any more is Junk an it Breaks Down or Wears out in a Very short Time..And GM there not going to allow a Return...

I am having issue with sound also, however pressing on the area of the speak is not a solutions in my case. This is what I experience. I can be listing to music and then plug in an external speaker, the external speaker does not have any sound. I remove the cable from the audio jack and the phone plays with the phone speaker. The only way to get the external jack working again is to reboot. After a reboot, the external speaker works. This same scenario happens with Bluetooth, I get in my car the phone is connected to the car radio, I play music on the phone and no music from the car speakers. I reboot the phone and bingo sound over Bluetooth. There are other times when doing these things work just fine. I have not been able to establish a pattern. I would guess it has to do with some app on my phone. I have lots of apps, so its a long process to find the issue. I know I can do a factor reset, but if you are like me that means quite a bit of work getting your phone all tweaked out again... The search for a solution continues.

You Want to Plug the External speaker into the Maxx Before playing the Music there is a safety feature that Cuts it off. And make sure the speaker is Designed to be able to work with your Maxx before you go any Further! because if it's not it could cause Damage to the Maxx..b33

Thank you for your reply, I have tried that as well, and sometimes it plays just fine other times it required a reboot of the phone and then it play fine. Shouldn't the safety feature cut off the speaker every time?

Curious, where would I find a list of approved speakers?

Also, please note this same behavior with Bluetooth.

I do still have the problem with Bluetooth, and this should not have anything to do with an approved speaker... I am confident this is a software issue, some app is gumming up the works. I have for example one app that records via the microphone on the phone and after a recording I try to play back the file and it shows it playing but no sound (just the phone in this scenario), I then reboot the Maxx and bingo it plays fine... The diagnostics continue... If I find the answer I post here so that others who may have this issue can share...

Well the Reason i posted this is there are some speakers that won't work as well as the ones i showed in the Link they may have sound but just not as Good..b33:smileyhappy:

I had that exact problem, they are sending me a replacement, I didn't realize I could temporarily restore sound by rubbing that spot until reading your post. Thanks. I received a "new" refurbished razr maxxit took 1.5 days of using that razr maxx for this problem to surface.

I suspect that is probably the reason it was turned in to begin with. they probably refurbished it by wiping the memory and just sending it right back out.

More in Likely they'll Pull the Piece that the Speaker Housed in it. Replace it Retest it Throw a New Battery in pop a new Case on it.. then send it back out..

Thank you! After days of dealing with only a vibrating phone & trying to get ALL my sounds back; ringtones, notifications, speaker volume etc., then to have Verizon tell me I would have to return the phone to fix issue. BUT after reading your entry, about "pushing on the back of the phone near the speaker" ALL was restored back to normal instantly!!! I canceled the replacement phone for now! Wished I had talked to you at Verizon... Thanks again for the info- It Worked!

I have had the issue of sound not working on my Razr Maxx as well. My girlfriend figured out if you take a screenshot it comes back on. I haven't tried pushing on the back of the phone beacuse the screenshot trick has worked for me every time. I am still pretty upset that this phone has so many problems!

I have been having the same issue. As mentioned by someone previously, taking a screenshot (or rebooting) seems to clear up the problem. This leads me to believe it is a software problem and not a hardware problem. It will happen to me once every couple of weeks. Annoying to say the least.

Also, pressing the speaker trick did nothing for me. So there may be two different issues here.

I don't have the maxx just the razr......but it is highly annoying try and play music,watch a video and have no sound have to reboot to get it to work again....Nothing better when you say hey guys check out this video oh wait give me 5 minutes to reboot my phone.And then it does it again on the next song or video.And the best thing is i bought these phones when they came out, for me and my wife with the hd dock car dock and everything else spent just short of $900.00.And the best VERIZON can do is replace it with someone else's used piece of crap.I take great care of my things these phones were to last us 2 years,then our children could have them for use with wifi to watch netflix and listen to music.Oh wait no they can't because no matter how good you take care of them there garbage right out of the box.VERIZON I HAVE BEEN WITH YOU FOR OVER 8 YEARS SPENT ABOUT $12,000 ON PHONE BILLS AND DEVICES THANKS FOR STICKING IT IN AND BREAKING IT OFF TO A LOYAL CUSTOMER.YOU SERIOUSLY HAVE TO RETHINK YOUR REPLACEMENT PLAN WHAT'S THE POINT OF PAYING FOR INSURANCE JUST SO YOUR BROKEN DEVICE IS REPLACED WITH ANOTHER BROKEN DEVICE.

Well all i can say is it's getting that way any more when you buy stuff and Warranty sometimes doesn't really mean a thing. I think the Policy when a person buys Like a phone could change a bit especially if an individual is having repeated issues. Verizon could Sell a new unit at half price or could give the individual some money for the Unit there turning in or trading in if they stay with the same class of phone. But that's a wish of just one person..

Since the issue did not appear for me until ICS makes me believe it is more of a software issue rather than a "faulty" hardware issue. I am guessing there is an app that is conflicting with the sound. The fact that taking a screenshot clears up the issue makes this even more likely.

I got the Razr Maxx and had to return it the same day because the speaker wasn't working. Month later the 2nd phone had same issue. Now on my 3rd phone and again same issue.

Half the time the speaker doesn't work. The only way to get it to work is to stick a headphone plug into it and wiggle it around. Half the time the navigation voice doesn't work, again speaker issue.

The only thing Verizon does is to ship off your phone and send a refurbished one back.

I would think a lemon law would allow us to get a brand new phone. Anyone looked into that?

I have had the same (or similar problem) a few times. The first time, I tried the screen shot method, and the sound immediately came back. The second and now, as of this morning, the third time the pressure on the back near the speaker worked. I don't drop the device.

I only had the phone a week before the ICS update, so I'm not sure if it's a software or hardware....but since it's seemingly fixed with a gentle massage, one has to assume hardware.

As a note, I have not gone in to get this fixed, but have talked to a in-store Verizon rep and they agreed it was a known problem among them, but nothing official through the store. I have not tried communicating with Motorola.

Phone purchased in June 2012.

Have been missing calls because the Razr Max sound does not work. Put in vibrate mode. Probably last time every buy another Motorola. No point in calling Verizon because they will act as if the problem is unique and at most ask to send the phone back to get a refurb.

Did you try a soft reset power plus the down volume hold for at least 20 to 30 sec. Let go of the buttons let it repower itself.. then try the setting again the volume see if it works..

I was having the same intermittent problem with my Motorola Razr with the sound. I also thought that it was an app hanging it up and also maybe an issue with ICS after it updated BUT... It was in fact a loose connection or a short at the speaker.

Fix: Applying pressure to the speaker area of the phone itself and it works just fine now. The question is, for how long? We will see.

Michael the speaker it self doesn't have any wires that are attached to the Board it basically sets in a Round style Shaped Bowl that is on the Board and that has Contacts that Rest up to Speaker in a Picture i Provided shows how the speaker set in there.. b33

You might try a system cache clear or soft reset and see if either of those help.

The first one had the no sound issue and the second one as soon as i turned it on portions of the screen were flickering. And as far as the option of buying a certified like new phone that is a joke. why would i pay money for a phone that you have "fixed" when you have proven to me you cant.

I am having the same sound problems. I got a replacement phone and now the replacement phone is having the same sound issue. That is two Razr Maxx's I have had with this issue. I went to the Verizon store and the guy says he is not aware of the issue. Like I believe that and I don't think the expect you to, but they don't want to admit to the problem. Mean while I am wasting my time dealing with this. They won't let me have a different kind of phone even though I pay the extra few dollars for insurance. And while I was at the Verizon store, the sound started working so there is nothing they can do. I just love being treated with no respect.
