Can we get any details on 4.0.4 Update for the Galaxy Nexus

Verizon,

Can you give us any information on the 4.0.4 update for the Galaxy Nexus? Any information you could put out here would go a long way towards calming users that at present feel both abandoned and left in the dark. We have no details and our expectations for a quick update cycle have not been met. Please tell us why, there are surly some good reasons. Without any input from you we are left to speculate and it is never in your favor.

Just a little insight into what is causing the delays of the roll-out would go a long way. Until then, it'll just be crickets and the angry mob of dedicated Android fans.

I do, but is there a better forum to go to? Is there another venue where VZW would be more likely to answer anyone's questions? If there is, I would happily post there.

Sadly, VZW doesn't make it easy to get answers.

I have seen the 4.0.4 ICS update with my own eyes on a Galaxy Nexus device inside of the Verizon store. I was on my way home and decided to stop into the store to see if their Nexus had 4.0.4. To my surprise, their Nexus is running 4.0.4. When I noticed the update on the phone, I asked an employee why I have not received the update and they fed me the same line that every other Verizon employee is feeding others. You know the line, "they are rolling the update put in waves, but if you keep checking for the update, you might see it soon."

Before I left the store, I took pictures of the phone showing the update. Also for those that live in or around Douglasville,Ga you can go to the Verizon store that sits on the corner of Douglas Blvd and Chapel Hill Rd to see the update for yourself.

I have added photos as evidence.

I went into the Alpharetta GA store today and saw their galaxy nexus' running 4.0.2. I even checked their phones for the update but got the standard "your system is currently up to date" message.

As a top-tier provider of telephony services, it is shocking that Verizon is unwilling/unable to adopt an agile approach to software fixes and releases. They have not addressed critical bugs in over 5 months despite the fact that fixes to some of the more significant ones (OS battery drain, lousy radios to name but two) have been available for months. Finally, it is most surprising that despite an outcry from it's customer's, Verizon is unwilling to have someone from marketing take an hour or two to craft an honest, transparent and intelligent response to its customers on this matter.

I don't mind waiting, provided I understand why. A two sentence response akin to "Engineers are working on the upgrade, but we don't yet have a release date" is insulting. An honest answer like one of the following would go a long way in improving their reputation within their customer base:

"We have been unable to release the 4.0.4 update due to pending legal actions with xxx"
"Our infrastructure will only support OTA updates for 20 million customers per month. Accordingly, we must provide updates to our most popular phones first. We expect to roll-out the update to the Galaxy Nexus a year from next Tuesday"
"Our engineering department found several critical problems with 4.0.4 including (list them). Accordingly, management has decided to forgo the release and hold out until Android 5.0 is ready. We expect Android 5 to be available in late 2012. Should you find that the issues you are facing with your Nexus running 4.0.2 are insurmountable, we will allow you to trade-in your Galaxy Nexus for one of our other smart phones at the new-every-two price

Google has called Verizon's bluff. The 4.0.4 updated is available on Google's server. I would suggest a little reading and searching will give you additional information.

Verizon still hasn't released it OTA, and I suspect they never will.unless we do manually download and install updates

I would be totally down for that. There has to be some algorithm of how they determine who gets phone updates based on how long you have been a verizon customer and how much money your account has generated over a certain period of time. I am probably last on their list. 4.0.4 exists but apparently we don't deserve it. I am frustrated because my phone just shuts off randomly. Is there a way to manually install it or just have to wait?

The update comes out based on serial number. Lowest serial numbers first. But Verizon still hasn't released the update

I have been on the phone with support every other day for the past month. I just need a phone that works. If I had any options to change providers or phones without costing next months rent I would, but I am trapped. Please Verizon, just give me the service I pay for monthly!

I also took note where you check the software updates under the galaxy nexus device support is missing as of earlier today.

I'm also seeing info where VZW has approved 4.0.4 and published support docs for the new version. However, the link you posted (and I've seen the same doc on a few other sites) is actually for 4.0.2 - build ICL53F. It is not for 4.0.4. Hopefully this is just an oversight and the supposed support docs really exist.

However, given their history and the huge mess they've made of this, I'll believe it when I have the notification on my phone.

I've had my Nexus over a month and it uses all battery power searching for a signal. When I try to make a phone call, I get the message " Mobile Network Not Available." It will not send text messages. The signal drops in and out. The phone gets HOT in my purse trying to find a signal. I was told by a Verizon employee who called "SUPPORT" that the upgrade would be sent sometime in the month of MAY. Today is the last day of May. I am still waiting. This is beyond frustrating.

With that said I can give you some information. This update does alleviate a lot of issues. Should really help with data drops and fluidity of the OS. It should give a significant boost in battery life, your mileage may vary. Should also help with random lockups and reboots. That's the good news.

The bad news is that the new radios that are rolling out with this update DO NOT solve dropped calls, audio screeching, popping, crackling, squelching and microphone cut out issues. Which to me, is the biggest deal of them all.

I do not work for verizon wireless which is even more sad that I have to pass this information on instead of the company supplying the service.

I filled a complaint with the BBB. I don't know how much good that will do, but that is the only practical weapon that I have against Verizon so I used it. I would get out of my contract, but I will have to pay the ridiculous cancellation fee and I am not doing that.

I don't know about y'all, but I plan to purchase the next Google flagship Nexus device directly from Google and take my business to T-Mobile when my contract is up. At first I thought about my unlimited data plan, but since Verizon is ending that, this actually is another motivator for me. Also, I only use about 2.5gigs of data per cycle. T-Mobile's coverage is pretty good in my area. Once I buy the device straight from Google, I can have true satisfaction (from a phone viewpoint) knowing that Google will push their updates and I will get them without waiting too long. I think that Verizon is a trip and deceiving to be quite honest. They waited too long to push this update and left everyone that purchased a Verizon Galaxy Nexus up in air about software updates. They stated last year that they were pushing an update to correct the "non-signal problem", but it is May 2012 and still no update on my phone.

i am seriously considering canceling all my lines and moving carriers over this failure and the failure to do anything about it in a timely matter.

the whole point in me getting this phone has been defeated by someone.
seeing that google put the update out long ago and i can't see samsung holding software up i have no choice but to blame verizon, which i do believe to be the culprit.

i also believe they were responsible for the botched release of the phone and for the removal of google wallet but that is for another discussion.

i have been a customer for over ten years and every time i upgrade i think to myself "should i switch".
this past upgrade i talked myself into staying because of this device along with my granfathered unlimited data plan kept me here but due to the failure in both i think i will be calling it quits in the near future with verizon and moving on to another company that i can get a pure nexus and support from the software developer.

it's unfortunate but i think verizon will (as they should) be losing a bunch of long term customers over this one..

Is the only part about the "Google Experience" that any one cares about is the updates? I was and still am very happy with my Google Experience on my Galaxy Nexus. Google Experience to me means no overlay, no ( or in vzw's case less ) bloatware, and when I got my Galaxy Nexus in December it was the only ICS Android on VZW. I have been through a lot of VZW Androids and it's always the same story just breeze through other device forums on this very site. You'll probably see me crying all over the Thunderbolt section but I got that switched out for a Charge and my crying dropped to almost nothing. Now I'm here trolling for posts of happy people reporting they got updates and results of their updates. Could everyone take a little break and a deep breath then when you actually get the update post about it (good or bad).

Based on this http://support.verizonwireless.com/pdf/system_update/samsung_galaxy_nexus.pdf the update is only going to " + Successfully send text messages without experiencing network connectivity issues " and " + Complete calls without experiencing choppy audio, clicking noises and one-way audio noises. ". So if your Galaxy Nexus WON'T make calls or send texts you NEED a new/different phone. From my experience if your phone doesn't work for you in an acceptable manor the way it is now it's probably the wrong device for you.

Of course not, because Verizon does not care about you or your concerns. Even when Google leveled thinly veiled contempt for the treatment of the Nexus line, Verizon did not bother with a response. Do you think they care about this? Give me a break. All other carries issue some kind of communication to their customers about software updates except...You guessed it, Verizon. It was the same with my Thunderbolt and it's nightmare litany of problems. Not a word from the monkeys at Verizon. Endless delays in update, no communication, phone reps clueless, etc, etc. No word until it showed up through "leaked" websites, and then a glacially slow roll out. Here I am with the G. Nexus, and this is all so very familiar. Over five months and nothing but crickets. I can not wait for my contract to end. Verizon's descent to the worst company in America is nearly complete. It takes conscious effort to achieve that status. Congratulations.

Further proof that despite record profits, Verizon cares little about keeping you happy through software updates, reasonable rates, etc. It only exists to make its CEO insanely wealthy and shareholders happy. If it has to treat employees and customers like garbage along the way, so be it.

One thing that seems very evident in this forum is that most Galaxy Nexus owners on Verizon don't know that the Nexus line ( line meaning the Nexus One, S, 4g S, and Galaxy Nexus ) is or was intended to be geared toward Developers. Hence the extra settings in the menu ( compared to say a "Droid") and the ability to unlock the device easily ( superusers correct me if I'm wrong ). In my opinion it might even be why Verizon has kinda kept quite about their Nexus. We begged for a Nexus and Verizon gave it to us, I'm happy. It is obvious that Verizon pushes the Razr harder than the Nexus because it's more user friendly and packed with that bloaty stuff that a lot of people cry about but don't really realize they miss it until moving to a hack-able, fully customize-able, clean, sexy, all stock Android that's probably over their heads. For those of you with issues you need to just realize that it's not just the phone's fault or Verizon's ( ok maybe a little ) but it's partially yours. If it's not working for you and you're not willing to install some custom OS then cut your losses and let it go. I did it with my Thunderbolt and Verizon actually gave me the newer Droid Charge. If you're having problems call Verizon demand answers, make sure it's documented, escalate the issue to a manager and just keep on them. I got 3 or 4 TBolts before getting the Charge it took work but Verizon rectified the issue. One thing you must remember is those VZW reps are people like you and I they don't want to be yelled at or told what to do. Be calm play the game and you will come out happier. Then when your contract is up bail and buy an iPhone ;-)

I know exactly the history of the Nexus line. Most smart phone users do not, hence the popularity of the iPhone. If Verizon/Google only intended the phone for developers, or aimed its main purpose for this, they should have limited its sales, marketed it as such, and warned customers of this on purchasing the phone. Of course this did not happen, as this would be contraindicated in Verizon's profit scheme.

The reason Verizon keeps "quiet" about their slow, half attempts at updates is, it costs them money. Again, something Verizon is loathe to do.

I too was given a used Droid Charge after months of torture on 4 Thunderbolts. Verizon of course, refused to reimburse me for all the accessories I bought, their highest profit margin items. The Charge was a cheap, slow, plasticy, often returned phone. The very reason Verizon was all to happy to get rid of them by "upgrading" the masses of highly irritated Thunderbolt legions.

I have called Verizon. While sometimes friendly, they know less than I do, thus a completely useless waste of time.

I received my update last night, June 1st around 11:00 p.m. in Northwest Arkansas. I had been experiencing some random reboots but it wasn't a problem I had consistently so it really didn't bother me all that much. The main problem I had was the one way audio followed by my phone dropping the call. At times it was annoying and frustrating but rendered my phone in no way unusable.

The overall impression since the update is that everything runs a little smoother. I haven't made any phone calls yet but hopefully there is some improvement to the radios but it seems as if that is more of a hardware problem. As this was the only problem I was really having I won't know for a few days whether it helped out or not.

Got mine this AM, too. same info as above. Seems to work so far, though signal strength in my house is lousy, but that is old news. new radios didn't seem to help that.

Technically, the Nexus line was not built to be primarily a developer phone. It was meant to be a continuation of the HTC G1 etc....and because of it being a stripped down phone with out the sense and blur type interfaces, it made for a good developer phone, just as the G1, G2, and so on. Most developers, only use phones for tests and testing. So, though, these phones have the "developer options" in the settings, that was not the primary focus for the intent of the phone.

Got my update about midnight (June2). Since then I have noticed that the volume has been greatly improved. I have yet to test call quality, but I think that it should be better. If you take a look at some other posts, you can manually get the update without waiting for the OTA. That method is successful as far as I know if you don't want to wait.

Just did this and I'm getting update now. It is the actual OTA not a scary online download. This only clears out data that is in your phone and for some reason gets you the update to push.

The 4.0.4 update is pushing out to a massive batch of Galaxy Nexus owners as you read this, however, there are still a number of you that have yet to be prompted. If you would like to speed up the process, you can try this little trick that dozens of readers have submitted as working like a charm.

1. From your phone, head into Settings>Apps>All.
2. Search for Google Services Framework.
3. Once found, tap on it and choose “Force stop.”
4. Then choose “Clear data.”
5. Back out of Apps to your About page in Settings and check for the System update.

You may have to repeat the steps a couple of times. Good luck!

Just worked for me as well, had to try it a couple of times. btw how did you get the temp indicator in the top left corner of your screen?
