Nicer basic phones??

Is it possible to get any nicer basic phones? I would love to upgrade both my kids phones however the phones that Verizon is offering don't look very nice and they reviews aren't that good.

Can Verizon PLEASE think about kids wanting cool phones, and the fact that parents don't' want to pay for data. So basic phones it is. Or else offer some nice choices for basic phones w/ wifi so us parents don't' have to pay for data. There is no reason a kid couldn't use an "iPhone" type phone without the data package. EXcept that Verizon (or whoever makes whatever rules) is too GREEDY and wants all that money.

Talking and texting is what basic phones are for, you want more you gotta pay more. Buy your kids an iPod Touch. Then they'll have everything they "need" of for the same price.

what you don't get is that there's no way to disable the radios to keep your kids off the data network. do what lewis suggested and get them an ipod. if they are really only going to use wifi, then an ipod will accomplish what you want. they tried selling cheaper, limited data plans and guess what happened? parents threw fits when they got $300 bills from verizon and didn't think they should be responsible because there kids used the data. my son has the lg octane (he's 12 years old)and loves it. i loaded all of his music on it and he can take pix and shoot video with it. what more does a kid need to do with it? when he wants to play around with apps or video call or whatever, he uses our pc, tablet, or my phone. by your reasoning, you kids would have to be within a wifi network to use it....so just use an ipod or tablet or pc.

Verizon may be GREEDY, but it seems you are teaching your kids to be just as GREEDY. But mom, I want want want the cool thing. Get me the cool thing.

I am also a parent, and I take offense to your plea for Verizon to help you to teach no self control to your children. I have a hard enough time teaching my children self control. Not everything in life should be available at the exact moment you want it. You should work for it and earn it. Just because my child WANTS something does not mean I am going to give it to them. I will first determine if they NEED it, whether or not they deserve it, whether or not I want to provide it and last, but not least, whether or not it fits into my budget. Then, I will make my decision.

just an fyi, some of us adults would like a wifi enabled phone also, without the data packagae costs. It's not greed, it's practicallity.

Did the OP say they wouldn't pay for the phone? Did they say they wanted it for free? No, they would just like the option. An option that companies don't want to provide.

At one time, they offered decent phones. They called them Multimedia phones at the time. They had a decent camera, ability to hold music, keyboards for texting and a nice screen. You remember them, the LG EnV Touch, Samsung Reality, et al. My wife and daughters all have Realities. They like them, but they are aging and may need replaced some day. When that happens, they won't have a good choice. They don't want data, so we block data. They can still use them for quite a bit. I don't know why it's too much to ask for decent non-smartphones. Data for smartphones is sky high. If they offered shared family data, we might be interested, but they won't do that either.

I will say, it's not just Verizon. No company offers good non-smartphones. It's the manufacturers, though the carriers might be in collusion with them on it, to get more people on smartphones.

the lg extravert looks fine. decent cam with video, qwerty, and music play. what more would someone need that doesn't need a smartphone? the problem is that these "in between" type of devices are difficult. they have data/web/app capabilities, but most users don't get them and pay for data. parents don't realize that they need to block data on the plan and the next thing you know their 11 year kid has been using a facebook app, the browser, and email on it. then the parents don't want to pay the $300 overage bills resulting from the data use. and i suspect you are correct. none of the carriers are requesting more and nicer feature types of phones because i'm guessing that they would rather have everyone on either a smartphone or VERY basic phone. not sure if it's quite collusion.....but they are definitely pushing smartphones.

I wish Verizon would offer smartphones with cheap plans like AT&T. Maybe $15 for 250MB like AT&T. I know the problem comes up with people going over but Verizon just wants to sell cell phones so I don't see why they couldn't.

$15 for <1gb of data isn't worth it. As soon as you go over you will pay more than $30 in the end. At less than 500mb it is very easy to do.

Yeah but the point is you still get the smartphone which has WiFi. Maybe they could implement something that stops you from using data on that plan, past your limit? I don't know just throwing out some ideas, ha.

Honestly if you are going to be on wifi that much... Might as well get a tablet... It's almost a null point to get a smartphone if you are going to be on wifi majority of the time. Get a mifi + tablet and it does the same as a smartphone.

Hi milomlo. All vzw phones can access the internet. Their basic phones provide what i call basic access to the internet. Their smartphones provide what i call advanced access to the internet. When i used the moto w385 (basic phone), i had access blocked. So all i could do with the w385 was talk and send the occasional text. Which was fine with me. Right now i have the env touch since june '10. If you're willing to do the research, you can check the ratings of vzw basic phones at Cnet, or phonearena, or phonescoop. Good luck. :smileyhappy:

This is the same thing I dealt with recently when I wanted to replace my old one, was looking for an Android or something like that without the REQUIRED data package which adds minimum $30 per month. Unfortunately that is not possible to have a smart phone active on a cell service without paying loads for it. You can buy a used smart phone and not activate it (aka do not use the "phone"), just use wifi, but that defeats having a phone you can travel with, or being forced to carry 2 "phones".

In the end I had no choice, so I went with the LG Extravert which has touch screen, can be used with prepaid or normal monthly service, still has web access for those emergencies like on the road and need to see the radar soon... but that is as close as we can get without being forced into an expensive data fee and contract.

How old are the "kids"? My kids got what WE, as parents, allowed them to have, what we, as parents, were willing to pay for. It happened, at the time, to be the basic, texting Env3 phones. When they got older, got jobs, and could pay for what they "wanted", then they either split off onto their own plan or paid for the data to have the iPhone they wanted on our family plan. My 23 yr old son is still using his ENv3; 20 yr old has the iPhone but she pays the data....

I have a 4 line family plan. A decent non-smart phone would be nice for my wife and I as well as my kids. As my kids have gotten older (15 and 17 year old boys), they have transitioned from talking to texting. They started out with the Samsung Juke's. At 10 and 12 years old a "switchblade" phones with music was pretty "cool". Christmas of 2009 (I think) I upgraded them to the Samsung Alias 2, an awesome phone for them. A dual mode flip phone with E-ink that could be used as a phone or as a QWERTY. At that time = NO DATA PLAN. The next Christmas (2010 I think) I went to upgrade my wife and I to the same phone - SORRY exact same phone requires a data plan NOW, so I said screw it and canceled the upgrade. Tired the Intensity II but the voice quality was TERRIBLE canceled and went back to older VX8350's. Waited another year (Christmas 2011). Now, no data plan again, but only on NEW basic phones, couldn't jsut add an after market Alias 2. Finally broke down and upgraded to the Extraverts. Seems ok so far, but had hoped for more. Verizon (and ALL of the carriers) seem content to abandon the BASIC phone customers in exchange for the $100 a month smartphone/data plan market. A family plan/share plan with data would be an AWESOME idea. I believe that you are seeing people minutes are going down but the text and data are going up. I saw a recent commercial for Virgin Communications, with limited minutes, but unlimited data/text. They are catching on and seeing the shift.

I went online and added a data block and a "get it now" block to all of my lines years ago after on eof my kids got a $5 charge for just "browsing" available ring tones. I accepted responsibility for the charge. I didn't complain, cry or whine. I paid my bill and added the blocks. I have had it that way for YEARS. There are tech savvy parents out there who do teach personal responsibility.

With today's technology. there is NO REASON at all not to integrate Wifi into basic phones, other that it is a data plan KILLER. Verizon saw this when they got the KIN phones on clearance after Microsoft abandoned them. Built in Wifi with a way to bypass the utilizing the 3G side. If they weren't such a crappy phone, they would have been a better seller. The technology is out there but it would cut into the mandated data plan $$$. In the famous words of Jerry McGuire - Show me the MONEY.

With the way most basic phones are... It's pointless to have wifi on them. Most of them have screens smaller than 3 inches, and are cumbersome to even to type out an address out.

I as an adult had been looking for a basic smart phone too. Data is not something i need or want i dont feel the need to be plugged in 24/7 to live my life and dont want my daughter to think that way either. I bought the Samsung Brightside, verizons newest edition of basic smartphones and i luv it!!!

A few of you seem to understand my point. I am not just giving in to every whim of my children. I mean good grief. I didn't ask to be ridiculed on my parenting skills. GROW UP.

My kids phones are OLD. One is one of the first model chocolates and it was originally my phone. I have never gotten my kids a NEW phone. They have always used the ones that my husband and I have used. When we upgraded they got a "new" phone. However, I now have an iPhone and I am not giving them an iPhone as I plan to keep mine. I am not paying for data. The new phones are basic flip phones.

My kids do have iPods which they used for everything. I was just thinking it would be nice for them to be able to have have one item that does everything they want. Listen to music, use the calculators (like my son does in school for his Cal class).

Others of you are correct. I had a verizon person tell me that they are trying to PUSH everyone to use smartphones. So yes I think that is being GREEDY. So the less in basic they offer the more they think people are going to switch over which means more money for them on data. I'm sorry but I think my phone bill is high enough as it is. Maybe if they offered decent family data plans or go back to the unlimited them maybe I'd be more inclined. My son would pay for his own data if he got one. I just don't' think it is necessary. Therefore he is NOT getting one. I think a WIFI accessible phone would be great.

OH just for those who think I give in to my kids every whim.....ALL DATA AND ANYTHING EXCEPT TEXTING IS BLOCKED ON BOTH THEIR PHONES.

my daughters data is blocked too but the phone i got for myself was a last choice because my rewards discount was going to expire at the end of the month my upgrade date was last december and rather than lose it altogether i got lucky enough that they came out with a new basic smartphone it requires data but you can choose a pay per use plan and if you never use it then theres no worries. dont listen to a bunch of people who probably cant handle not being "plugged in". some of the older smartphones if bought used elsewhere wont be required to have data. LG chocolate touch(daughters)/and LG envy(my old phone) are two that you can do that with, just make sure the esn is clean.

Here's the deal. This is Verizon's network and they can do what they see fit. If you don't like their terms move on, and find another carrier, or drop their service all together. Just like the data plan... You don't need a cell phone. We did fine more thousands upon thousands of years without it...

To tell you now. As soon as I don't like the terms I am moving on myself. I don't agree to it, and then complain about it.

Not sure what that's supposed to mean, but i dont usually get involved in blogging. I opened an email from verizon & it took me to the community page and people were attacking this persons parenting skills suggesting she get them iphones at one point and then telling her she was teaching them to be greedy, just wanted her to feel like there was someone who understood.

There are a lot of people(not everyone) out there who feel the need to be plugged in entirely too much and then companies make you feel like you are missing out if you're not.

but. . . isnt blogging supposed to help accomplish getting your complaints heard, if not then i'm sorry, i missunderstood its purpose.

It's not about blogging. Anything that is said can travel quickly on the web. People have complained about the lack of basic phones since a few years ago. It's that most people don't care much a long as they can make calls. You fall into the category that do care which is a small amount of people.

whatever it is, i was just trying to identify with the woman. i understand her wish to not have data on the phones i dont either. technology is great i dont have anything against it, i just think its overated to have it at your fingertips constantly when you dont really need it(not including people who do need it for their jobs and everything else to keep track). it just gets to be too much

i dont know if you can block the data on the new Samsung Brightside, but its a

basic smartphone that allows you to use the pay per use instead of buying an

actual amount of data. It's my own phone so i just dont use it. but i know that

there are some older smartphones (LG Chocolate/Envy) that you can get used and

not have to have a data plan if you block it.

I agree with the original post. My dd and I were due for upgrades on our phones so we stopped in the local store to browse. Iphones at $99-$400, Smartphones at $200-$400. And, for these phones you HAVE to upgrade to a data plan at $30 per line, per month. Only two bare bones models, at $140 & $160. We are a family of five, three of us with phones through Verizon (dh now gets his thru work.. it used to be four). We have been with Verizon for YEARS, before it was even called Verizon. On what planet can a family afford this? We turned around and walked out.

My dd has the same phone as me b/c it was a buy one/get one deal. My other dd has a nicer phone, b/c it was her Xmas present last year.

I feel like Verizon is abandoning families as customers. We can't afford to data package everyone in our family and if we keep the bare bones phones (which, I must say, we only use in our family to facilitate SAFETY and knowledge of where our kids are) we will have VERY limited choices. It feels like extortion. Not upgrading until I see something different from them.

Here's to hoping no one drops their phone!

i get that people want the cool phones without the data plans, but if you honestly aren't going to use any of the data related services, then i think 14 basic phones is a pretty decent selection. sure, they don't all have touch screens, or even qwerty keyboards......but it doesn't sound like you "need" all of that.

I think it is a shame that Verizon offers 3 or 4 non flip, full screen phones $79-$99 one is free and it is the Pantech Jest. The same type phones used to be approx. $50. You can buy a netbook/laptop for the price of some phones.... There was a time when the data charge was by the minute on your plan until they realized what a money maker it is then it went to data plans unlimited and now it is just getting worse. I just feel if people are willing to pay they are just going to keep accomodating those who are willing to pay for it. Corporate Greed and the fact that people want instant access to everything is terrible these days. They used to give $100 if you had a phone for 2 years and then took that away told me phones cost more. I am not buying one of those fancy phones so why do I lose. If someone at Verizon reads these blogs please recognize the issue. I just want to be able to see picture bigger than a stamp, send pics, text and talk. We can only wish the competition will make them make some changes soon. Very frustrated customer.....thanks for letting me vent:)

The LG Extravert & Cosmos 2 are good phones for kids and will satisfy your kids "needs" for texting. They have slide out Querty keyboards and work great. I've tested them, Texting plans on basic phones are as low as $10/line for a 1000 messages. If your kids are doing more than 1000, they have too much free time on their hands and ignoring other things like school work etc. So there's really no need for WiFi. Regarding phones as it relates to kids, kids rarely have "needs"........it's more "wants" with them.

I understand the frustration with Verizon though. I have an old family plan that has 1000 minutes. My plan averages about 835 minutes shared per month. To go to the next plan which is more expensive, I'd have to go to 1400 minutes. I'd never use them but I'd have to pay for them. There is NOTHING..... plan wise that is in between 700 & 1400 minutes. Verizon has it down to a science. It's like the data plans..............many were grandfathered in at UNLIMITED for $30/mo......you can't get unlimited for $30 anymore. However, 95% of data users use less than 2 gigs a month. So Verizon cut the plan to what drove the market.....95% of data users. My point is, since more than 50% of cell phone users are using "Smartphones", Verizon's product offerings are going to be driven where the market is, and is heading. That's bad news for people like us who don't use or want smartphones.

So if your kids don't "NEED" a smartphone, and you don't own a tablet, get your kids a phone from what's available, & if they balk, tell them they can pay for it themselves. Are your kids aware that they can send a text message to friend from a PC, MAC or Laptop also?

But it's not just verizon, other carriers like AT&T don't have unlimited data anymore for new customers. I don't understand why if people are so unhappy with verizon they don't just leave and get like boost mobile or some such with unlimited everything on a smart phone to satisfy their needs. Mary

I think that the mom in the original post is right in the fact that Verizon is skimping out on their basic phones. Which is, from what I read, all she meant by her post. It's not that she wants to give her kids an iPhone but something better constructed than the crappy ones they offer under 'basic phones'

I am 23 years old and I, like your 12 year old, have the LG Octane. I love the phone but Verizon discontinued it and there is nothing else like it available. I've been told plenty of times by Verizon associates that they are purposely limiting the number of basic phones you can buy (heck, they don't even have them in the stores for you to even look at anymore) in an effort to move people in data contracts.

I tried to purchase my dad a new phone for Father's day because he still had the LG VX3200 (that flip phone with the blue/grey lid and no camera) and he wanted a simple flip phone to call home on lunch. When I went to the store to look at them and determine which one had the biggest font, the easiest buttons to type with, etc. they pulled a couple out of their 'donation' bin that were beat to hell for me to look at haha

For people like myself and my family, who only text and call each other, the pickings are slim.

As far as the iPod goes. I bought myself one so I could use it on campus a couple years ago but I too wish phone companies would give you the option to just use WiFi instead of paying for data (it's not like I will need internet access when I am driving or at the grocery store) because it is annoying to carry both with me. I too would love an "iPhone" type phone that I can access the internet with when I am home or somewhere with WiFi

I think it's funny that when you posted this in March it was 14. Now it's 11....

And the numbers are getting slimmer and slimmer haha.

And if you're like my mother who cannot text T9 and cannot use a touch screen your options are cut again to 5.

But probably because services like Boost and Cricket and Virgin Mobile have 1/2 the coverage of Verizon. If not less.

Where I live, anyone that doesn't have Verizon, doesn't have service. (I live in Monmouth county in NJ, mind you, not a swamp down South haha). They can walk around all they want with their phone raised in the air but it's not going to happen. We do have a home phone so we barely use our cells while home.

Also, no family plans on Boost or the others. Right now my family shares 700 minutes, and between the 4 of us, we don't come close. With Boost, we'd be paying $45/mo each

I agree with the request for basic phones with better features shy of a data plan. I bought my teenager a Kin One by Microsoft when they were available from Verizon. It was the only model of basic phone that included wifi. He enjoys watching YouTube while still being able to text and call. No such option exists today and I don't want him carrying two devices.

Please bring back an option for wifi without data. {8^)>

You might try walmarts talk text and web they do offer a little nicer phone. Bill is at least prepaid and can't go over. That is what I got for kids. They run on verizon network. I can't see any difference in their service.

The only reason for not allowing people to activate smartphones without data is GREED! The Kin ONE and TWO are perfect examples. They went from being "smartphones" to "basic" phones and kept all the same features! Come on Verizon, why not do the same thing again...????? Your selection of basic phones is a disgrace! Most of them have what is BARELY classified as a camera , none have wifi, and most are laggy and poorly designed.

My son had a Kin 2. It was garbage, didn't even last a year. The wi-fi? He never used it because the browser was slow as heck. Not to mention the screen was way to small for browsing anyways.

So based on your post you want a basic phone with smartphone features. Then it wouldn't be a BASIC phone. Perhaps you should learn what the definition of BASIC phone is.

There is a good reason to require a data plan on smartphones. You may say you only use wi-fi but it would be very easy to accidentally use data. And if you did you'd be charged $51.20 per GB. And even though that would be your fault you get all mad at Verizon for your high overage bill.

You apparently don't understand what I'm talking about. First off, I have had MY kin 2 for the last year and it's fine. Not the best phone ever, but the wifi does work and I can do basic web browsing. But that's why I'm asking them to come out with better ones. Second, I also called Verizon when I bought the phone and had them block any data usage, so even if I tried or accidentally tried to access internet without wifi it does not work...I'VE TRIED. Third obviously a basic phone with smartphone features would STILL be a basic phone because that's exactly what the KIN phones are. They use to be smartphones and Verizon turned them into basic phones. LAST BUT NOT LEAST I'm not saying I want a basic phone with all the smartphone features, I'm saying I want a basic phone with a good camera with a flash (if that's not too much to ask) and WIFI. You can keep your iphone with SIRI, navigation, angry birds, and everything else for smartphones, but give us something a little better than a 1.3mp camera that was outdated 15 years ago. Please read and understand before replying next time.

I agree, I think they should come up with another option that offers wifi. I'm very close to switching wireless carriers. Just waiting for contract to expire.

PS. go to e-bay and buy a KIN2. . . if offers free wifi.

I hate to admit it, but you can get a basic data plan with 150mb for about $15/month. But then again, that doesnt help those of us who may not want to pay verizon for data at all. I hate the way they advertise their plans. Lets be honest, they do it to make people not want to spend $100/month per phone. If they were to advertise that, most people would have sticker shock and wouldnt buy their service. Instead they simply get their bill and say to themselves "darn it, im stuck for 2 years on this, so I gotta pay this $130 phone bill (with taxes). They sign the check and try to forget how badly vzw just hurt them. In my area, I do that simply because there is no other carrier in my area. So to me, they are violating the Sherman ACT, with their monopoly by pushing these unusually expensive phones and plans upon their "customers". Just like they split up MABELL in the 1980's, I think they should do the same to this new telephone Monopoly (and att too in their monopoly area's)!

I have the LG Octane, but really really miss my Envy3. I love to text and talk but have no need for a data plan as I work from home and I am almost always online anyway. When I leave I do not need data. I really agree with the original poster. I am an adult by the way. I want a phone with the characteristics that the Envy3 has and I do not want a touch screen. My daughter has the Brightside and hates a touch screen too. It often calls people randomly too

I have decided since I cannot get a decent phone with decent reviews without a data plan I am going to get my next one maybe on ebay or something. I won't be forced into a data plan. I think it would be cool to have a phone that has wifi capabilities. It isn't possible because Verizon refuses to honor those of us who have been a loyal customers for over 10 years by offering decent basic phones and the list is getting smaller every month.

Verizon "honors" you by giving you the service you pay for. All customers are equal and no customer deserves any more than any other customer. We all pay for service and we all receive service. Verizon's business model seems to be moving more and more toward the high-end smartphone market. They are not a phone company, they are a network company. They sell voice and data network capacity. You might do better with a company that caters to the basic phone market segment. If you want a device for WIFI, get a tablet such as the Nexus 7.
