Verizon Remote Diagnostics Tool

I was talking to someone on another forum and found out that it IS on my phone.

To see it on your phone touch Settings>Applications>Manage applications and at the top of the display choose the tab ALL. Then go down the list to Verizon Remote Diagnostics.

Bring it up and scroll down to see the LONG list of PERMISSIONS. The only one they missed was permission to see my personal Bank Account.

That was in the FP1 update right? I still haven't installed it.

Wow, i just read that list of permissions. I would NEVER install an app that gave anyone that kind of permission. Apparently, they have access to my calendar, the ability to use services that cost money, my GPS location, send email to guests, etc.

Even if Verizon can be trusted with all this information a) they don't need all of it and b) it seems like a bit potential security hole, especially for something that is installed on so many different devices, whether people want it or not (and without giving people the ability to opt out or remove it).

I think I understand the intention of things like this but it is very big brother-y . . . not super cool with being forced to have certain programs installed on my phone. I understand that Verizon subsidizes the cost of phones to make them affordable at upgrade time but there is a certain point where I think they're abusing their influence on devices we ultimately pay for (whether up front or over time). Maybe I'm just being paranoid but it doesn't sit well with me. It's things like this that make me want to . . . "set my phone free."

Thanks for the information. Microsoft does the same thing. I have consented to their expert going into my PC to take a look-see and help me. You have to give them permission and after they finish you can remove (delete) the permission. I trust that Verizon's works the same way.

Simply put, I will NOT install "Super CarrierIQ" on my phone. I get notified about this update 10+ times a day, which is insanely annoying, so in a couple months when my contract is up, (if I last that long), I will be leaving Verizon. You will not force such software on me.

....verizon is really trying to get your info....lol

its ment for the thousands of users that dont know where their menu button is on the phone and take 45-50 mins for a basic 4 min call.. its not ment to spy on you

Then make it optional, do not force something that has the POTENTIAL to gather every bit of info on my device and open security holes.

It could easily be included in the update and be removable/uninstallable after it is installed, but it is not.

On top of that, what is the real point? You've clearly never dealt with Verizon support. Their solution for everything is either reboot the phone or factory reset it. Verizon support is about as helpful, probably less actually, then Dell support. So what are these highly uneducated, inexperienced, "techs" going to do when they remotely connect to my phone? Either nothing or factory reset it.

The fact that this is not optional is the main problem. To force something with the POTENTIAL problems, for lack of a better word, is overly suspicious and simply the wrong choice.

If you're having software problems call the manufactuer if you want better support. Verizon should not hold your hand because you downloaded lookout or advance task killer and dont know what you're doing..

most of the time with android phones a factory reset is needed because people dont keep things up to date, or have no clue of their settings.

I think the reason this feature cant be installed as a 3rd party app or a optional software is because simply the access and permissions that would be able to access a device remotely cant be supplied by any applications that are not integrated into the software, all remote software that exist now requires SU access.

Besides it seems that the Verizon Remote Tool may not interact with the device but be able to view data stored in the default system diagnostics software kind of like a system logcat file that developers use to identify and troubleshoot software bugs.
