Incredible and international travel?

Hello all,

I am a current AT&T/Iphone user and am tired of getting raped on international travel. $20 a MB with places with no plan.

I am on the edge of switching over to Verizon and buying the new incredible, I am leaving for South Africa in about a month for about 3 weeks and I am here to try to get a couple of answers. I have called Verizon 3 times today, spoke to 3 different people and got 3 different answers.

I understand that Verizon offers a global data plan for like $64.99 a month.

Will the Incredible work on this plan?

I have been told yes and no. The last person I talked to actually made the most sense and really seemed like she knew what she was talking about. She said no because under the spec it doesn't say Global capable. Now the other guy I spoke to said it would work because it's a smartphone and its the same data all around, I just need to get on the global plan.

Can anybody get me a definitive answer?

NO, The Incredible is not a global phone, thus it cant use a global data package.

I just found out today that my brand new Droid Incredible is not a global phone. I was literally speechless when I found out, because for some reason, I missed the fact that this phone was a dual-band CDMA only. I stupidly assumed that this phone was an iPhone competitor, and I could use it abroad.

I switched from the iPhone/AT&T because I too was tired of getting a$$-raped every time I traveled abroad and used my phone (in addition to all the other iPhone/AT&T complaints I have).

But now I can't use my Droid Incredible abroad, and that was verified by a Verizon global services rep. I suppose I could use the Wi-Fi features if I tried (for all the travel apps I downloaded), but what is the point of taking it with me if I can't make calls or send/receive texts?

Verizon's solution is their Global Travel Program. They are going to send me a phone to use while I am away, which will have my existing number attached to it, so I can make calls and text, and it will also have wi-fi/network capabilities so I can check my email and use the web.

I will only get charged for what I use. By the looks of it, it will be cheaper than the Global Data Add-on packages and roaming rates from AT&T, but I will only really know how good this plan is once I get back.

I have to tell you Verizon, this might be a deal-breaker for me. But I am going to give this Global Travel Program a chance because I otherwise like my Incredible.

I went to india recently with my incredible and it was working all fine and good.

Basically if that country has CDMA carriers (verizon being CDMA) then its most likely that u would get the coverage.

I just called up and askd cust care if they have tie ups with indian carriers and they said yes.
i diabled the data plans/sms/ etc which i did not wanted to use or pay hefty bills on roaming.
I did not take any global plans but it was "pay as u use" for gloabl roaming....i used to receive calls but did not attend any, so i never got charged anything. u can attend the cals as per ur requirement. but if the volume of calls is huge on roaming u can take up their global plan of 64$ something..

I have a question about this. Why do the Verizon Employee's on the forums bother suggesting this for people needing a solution now. LTE won't be available until the end of this year and that is only for Modems. No word as of yet as to when an actual phone would be available and besides that most of Europe is going to be a little behind Verizon on releasing their LTE. SOoooooo Would it really be any benefit for someone going to Europe this summer to look into Verizon's LTE. That won't be a practical solution until the end of 2012 or beginning of 2013 and for global roaming who knows? Also just because it is LTE doesn't mean it is Global because Europe will be on a different frequency so you will still have to get a phone that is capable of operating on the European frequencies.

A better solution would be to watch out for the Droid Pro and other solutions coming this Autumn. There are a few Global roaming capable Droids on the way this year. Don't remember about the Droid 2, my instinct says no but I would have to check to be sure but there are some killer global droids on the way.
