I've looked through all the literature that originally came with phone and there is no symble legend!

it has an icon legend but doesn't show one like what you describe. are you sure it's a battery icon with an exclamation point? and do you have any battery management apps installed? it could be from one of those apps, as the legend doesn't show what you describe.
