Incredible not connecting to computer

I am hoping that someone might be able to help me with this issue: I cannot get my phone to connect to my computer.  When I plug it in though the USB cord all that happens is that the phone charges, but neither the phone nor the computer notice the connection, and HTC Sync says that no device is connected.  I have switched around the settings on the phone, and it is not set to just charge when connected to the computer.  If anyone could help me with this I would greatly appreciate it.  Thank you.

Also, I have tried turning off the phone, disconnecting the battery, reconnecting the battery and turning the phone back on, but that did not help me.  And yes, it is set under settings to ask me when connected.
