Razor Maxx Gorilla glass just popped in my back pocket! Is this normal? Its 2 weeks old! No scatches or dents. Just broke!
That depends on what you were doing. Gorilla glass is shatter and scratch "resistant" It's not bulletproof. If you sat on it or ran into something you could very well break it. The only other explanation I can think of at the moment would be an abundance of temperature extremes. like from really cold to really hot . You don't work in a freezer all day or anything do you?
No temperature extremes. Didn't run into anything, just sat down in a chair and felt a pop.
There you go. Yes, it is scratch resistant, but if you put strain on the glass by trying to bend it, yes, it will most likely crack.
Sitting on your phone will do just that.
No disrespect but it wasn't built to be sit on, its not surprised that it broke when it was put under the pressure on your body weight.
You should never carry your phone in your back pocket. Carry it in your front pocket.
Just don't tell them it was in your back pocket when you try and get it replaced

Think about it for a bit, buddy.
3 weks with my maxx now and no problems...as for your screen cracking, well nothing just "happens" by itself...
ummm...is this real life? You can't be serious, right?
*sigh*
If you did not take out the insurance it might not be too late. my daughter did something similar and I just picked up the insurance and payed the $75.00
I carry mine in my Front pocket all the time -- either in loose Cargo-style shorts or tighter jeans .. i always make a habit of turning the screen torwards my thigh. just in case I bump something while walking around ... I've yet to have any issues with the screen; no cover, no case. knock on wood.
That is not a Good place to put it. Mine rides on my person in it's Holster that way it's free from stress on the Glass..
Yes i would say that when you sit on your phone and it breaks i would classify that as normal!
I do the same thing as you. Hard items such as keys and loose change in my left pocket. Razr Maxx with screen facing my thigh in the right pocket. But I've gone one step further and added an Otterbox Commuter case and a Boxwave screen protector. I think of Gorilla Glass as a selling gimmick. Sitting down with a smart phone in your back pocket is a BIG "no-no".
Gorilla Glass is a Good product but any Glass it Will Break and as for the Otto Box Smart Move..b33
If you sit on your phone, there is a really good chance that you will break it. I carry mine in a belt case with the screen always turned in.
I sure hope that you get what you deserve when you brink it back - nothing.
DON
I would say that carrying it in really any tight pocket would put a strain on the phone and thus the glass. I have had mine in my front pocket with the screen toward my thigh. I started this habit when I had my Droid Inc. But my DInc was a much smaller phone and easier to carry in my jeans pocket. With this phone I can feel the strain as I sit. I can do it if I have a large front pocket in say cargo shorts or slacks. Beyond that I have an Otterbox Defender case with a belt holster. I keep the phone turned in (it has the option to turn out and be used as a stand). Yes the case is quite bulky but it is better protected.
A screen protector and a good case/holster will go a long ways in keeping your phone safe. Also, there's two things that most people don't know about their phones.
1. If you keep your phone in your pocket, it raises the phones temperature to that of your body, having a dramatic effect on it's overall battery life. Keeping it below 85- 86 degrees will help your battery last longer. This is where a belt holster comes in. Quick access and it keeps your phone in the open where air can circulate and the phone can maintain normal temperature (this is only IF the temp outside is a normal temp, we've been having 95 - 100 degree days )
2. Even if you have Gorilla glass on your phone, it can still shatter. Here's one way to avoid that: Buy a screen protector(preferably Zagg). The screen protector actually helps prevent more than just scratches by forcing any external shock to be distributed over the entire screen through it's binding effect. This is just physics, and it does really work. All I have is a droid 2 with a Zagg screen protector. No gorilla glass. But I've dropped mine (twice now) from the top of a 10 foot ladder at work onto the solid concrete floor. Each time I was thinking "This is it. This is the time it shatters into a thousand pieces." The glass is still perfect. Bear in mind I don't have anything but a holster (no TPU case) for my droid 2. This will have less benefit when dealing with a focused impact on the glass, ie a hammer or sitting on it, or something like that, but it is immensely helpful when dealing with everyday drops. Besides the ladder, I can't tell you how many normal (6 foot or less) drops that it has survived.
Another thing one's can use and i have is Shirts with Pockets i have put my phones there before. But you have to remember they're there when you bend over to get something. But most of the time Now i put them in the Leather Holster..
In the past two weeks I've had screens crack on two Droid Razor phones. For the first one I'll have to accept some blame because I dropped it. Not a long drop mind you, just from my pocket to the ground. About 2 1/2 feet total. The second one broke while it was in my pocket. I'm not sure how it happened but it may have cracked when I leaned against my car door. Very little weight was put on the phone and I'm not even sure if that is what caused the problem. I do know that there seems to be a credibility issue with the advertising done for Gorilla Glass and the actual experience of the users of the product. I believe the manufacturer should be reimbursing consumers for a product that doesn't live up to it's advertised performance. Perhaps a name change from Gorilla Glass to Teddy Bear Glass would more accurately describe the products performance.
Dear CSGstuff,Good morning. I appreciate you taking the time to inform us of your concerns. A cracked screen is never a good thing. I apologize you have experienced this not once but twice with the same devie. Unfortunately, a cracked screen is considered physical damage and would not be covered under the manufactures warranty. If you have insurance through Asurion, you may file an insurance claim. Click here to start your claim http://bit.ly/07CrqPK . MichelleS_VZWVZW SupportFollow us on Twitter @VZWSUPPORT
I had my phone for only 30 days. I use a zagg screen protector. I have not dropped my phone or had it in my pocket. I just picked it up from my desk and the screen was cracked. I have read other posts where over 60 people are having the same problems. The screens are just cracking. Its so sad we have to pay the deductible for a new phone when this seems like a manufacture problem.
This is Very True i'v had my one Maxx for now over a Year and i'm constantly reminding my self that even though the Glass is Gorilla it can still Break.!
In my opinion, for the vast majority of cracking screens it is just a matter of people not being as gentle(or careful) with their phone as they believe. Or they are purposely trying to minimize their responsibility in the cracking. I don't believe that these screens are "just cracking".
If so many of these screens are "just cracking" there would have been some instances where a person had gone to purchase one of these phones and the salesman would have taken an untouched phone out of an unopened box and held up a phone with a cracked screen. I have seen no reports of this being the case. If the screens are "just cracking" on their own, there would have been reports of this.
I think it MUCH more likely that people are a bit harder/careless with their phones than they believe or are willing to admit. I know 15-20 people with these Razr phones(both Maxx and regular, both HD and regular) and have yet to actually see one with a screen that "just cracked" let alone seeing one which cracked because it was mishandled. I am by no means overly cautious with my Razr Maxx HD yet have had no problems.
I believe the problem people are having is that the screens are cracking under what is considered to be normal use. I have owned numerous smart phones over the years and never had a problem with screen breakage until I purchased a Razor. It appears from reading the comments here that the screens on Razor phones are more prone to cracking than the industry standard. I would love to see a breakdown of screen breakage comparing Razor phones to other smart phones. If the Razor phone screens are cracking at a rate greater than other smart phones then they are falling short of the industry standard and the manufacturer should compensate purchasers for the loss incurred.
I'll go with that RC :smileyhappy: i will say however my behind Cheeks get a little on the tight side when i accidentally let my Maxx slip out of my Fingers in a Uncontrolled kind of Way.. it don't happen Much but when it does my Red hair also changes in Color b
I can imagine it may have slipped out of your fingers a few times on Saturday when the Shockers let that game slip through their fingers.
I would tend to believe that as phones get larger, the "industry standard" you seem to be referring to will keep changing.
After all, what is one of the other phones you hear most about "just cracking" for no reason? Could it possibly be the Galaxy SIII with an even larger screen than the Razr phones? I tend to think if both of these phone have increased instances of cracking it is more a result of people treating these phones the same way as they would a phone with a screen size 20-30% smaller. Of course there is going to be more stress on the screen if you put a piece of glass in your pocket which is 25%+ larger in size(and thinner to boot) than what you have had in the past.
The larger and thinner a phone gets, the more prone it will be to having the screen crack. Plain physics at work. The fact people do not take more precautions will just exacerbate the problem. The fact people don't "think" they should take more precautions is beyond me.

No what I think it people hear "gorilla glass" and hear "scratch resistant" and think "shatter proof" and and handle it as if it was.
Thanks for providing additional info on your issue Lorri4612. Is this an internal or external crack? For internal cracks, the glass will be smooth to the touch. This can be sometimes caused due to overheating. If no other damage, we can review warranty options. I would suggest having your phone checked out in a corporate store. If the external display is cracked then this would be considered physical damage and caused by some type of pressure to the phone. MarquiaF_VZWFollow us on Twitter @VZWSupport
There are over 60 people including myself that have cracked screens with no explanation. My phone was well taken care of, fine when I sent a text, picked up 10 min. later screen was cracked. I don't think everyone here is making this up.
Why should you pay $75 for a phone that has known problems with the screen and they sold it to you to begin with? Something is not right. Why should any of us have to pay another cent for being deceived and products being misrepresented?
Oh yes it does !
My husband has had his Razr Maxx HD for 4 days and the screen is cracked . He is very careful with his electronics so this is obviously a flaw in the design.
This is his second Razr Maxx in less than 2 weeks because he had to send the first back . It was DOA.
