Any word on when we will see the 4.2.1 update for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus? It's been out for a while. Seems like the other carriers are beating Verizon to the punch.
Don't hold your breath. The LTE Galaxy Nexus is an orphan. I think Verizon, Samsung, and Google would all like to pretend it doesn't exist. Despite being a "Nexus" device, our updates come out weeks or months after the GSM version with all of the above companies blaming each other for the delay in the LTE version's update. Eventually, a leaked version of the LTE update starts circulating but Verizon waits weeks before providing that exact image to customers.
And we still get the shaft because, even after they make the update available, we have to manually clear the Google Services Framework in order to trick the updater into downloading the new software. I've had to do that with the last two updates.
It's a sad state of affairs.
What's sad is how people question when updates will come out as if they NEED them. If you want the updates THAT bad then root your phone. I've been on 4.2.1 since it hit AOSP.
I don't think you understand the concept of the "Nexus" line.
Your new to Verizon and updates aren't you? I don't say that in a mean spirited way. I'm simply saying that VZW dragging their feet on updates had been going on since they launched the original Droid from Motorola. As long as they have the best network and are #1 in the US in terms of market share they will continue to screw the people that pay their bills. They could care less about pushing updates out to customers in a timely fashion because they don't have to.
If you get bored you can always file complaints with the FCC and the BBB. It won't accomplish much but it does cause someone from corporate to follow up and assign a case # for review.
It is frustrating how they take their time "approving" updates. Even though I have the technical skills to <Comments deleted per the ToS>, I have been trying to be patient with Verizon and play by their rules. A week, two weeks? Fine! But when significant portions of your phone's 2-year lifespan are spent waiting on updates, I feel like I'm being cheated out of my user experience. If you renewed your Verizon contract for another 2 years and you had to wait MONTHS to get your new phone, during which time you are forced to use your old phone, you're be furious. This is really no different.

It looks to me as though they see it as "waiting for updates" is part of our "USER EXPERIENCE" maybe. AT least you have a version of jelly bean those guys over on the tablet forum are still trying to go from 3.2 to 4.04 then every day or two VZW teases them with a small 29.3mb update which always fails. They are really getting upset with that cause some of them may get the update 2-3 times a day. Good luck with your newer version of jellybean hope you get is soon.
My Nexus works perfectly fine an smoothly with 4.1.1, I suspect the complainers on here are experiencing the same thing.
When carriers released the 4.1.2 to other devices, several bugs appeared, and there were small bug fixes issued to address them. The LTE radio VZW uses is unique, and likely part of the very reason that the near unanimous opinion that VZW is the best, fastest and widest coverage carrier out there. So don't look at the delay in the updates as you being punished, neglected, or ignored, think of it as being protected from any possible interference that some updates may inflict on those radios and the functionality of your Nexus to access data and voice at the speeds you've come to expect.
I would certainly rather wait for VZW to finish testing than rushing to push an update that could severely degrade the GNex performance, and having to install 2 or 3 hastily crafted "patches" and spend time on hold with customer service who are getting hammered by complaints just like mine.
I am so right along with you. As I could <Comments deleted per the ToS> cus I have another one that will be here by Tuesday. This will be my 3rd nexus due to auto reboots and black screens etc. I do feel that the Galaxy Nexus has been neglected and for my first Android I am not so impressed. I even had to force push just to get JB 4.1.1 on here now cus it had been out for at least a month and for some reason Verizon was not Auto OTA so thanks for youtube that showed me how to get it. I have a Galaxy 3 also that just came from sprint and now the Galaxy 3 we got from verizon will not play imbedded HTML 5 videos. I talked to a Tier 1 level tech support and they pointed the finger at Samsung. HMMM same phones Galaxy 3 from Sprint played HTLM 5 no problem. Galaxy 3 from Verizon does not play HTML5 and gets a blank screen but points the finger at Samsung instead of wanting to resolve the issue.
Wasn't one of the selling points that was that because the phone was by Google it would recieve updates much faster then other phones?
On any other carrier that's what it means.
Yes it was. That was explicitly said to me by the rep(s) from whom I purchased my phone. It worked great until Jellybean. Now the battery dies in about 2 hours, it thinks the charger is plugged-in when it isn't, and the bluetooth got very flakey. All the day of the update.
I pay verizon and should not have to wait for bug fixes. It is their (neglected) responsibility and this is why I'll be changing companies when it becomes convenient.
Here's the thing, it's not necessarily a matter of need. Some people like having the latest version of the OS and you shouldn't feel like you HAVE to <Deleted> your phone to get them on a Nexus device. (Full disclosure: <Comments deleted to comply with the Verizon Wireless Terms of Service.> I wanted the stock android experience and all that comes with a Nexus device.)
Bottom line is that we were SOLD a Nexus phone. For most Android users that name means things and there are certain expectations that come with it. Verizon has not delivered ONCE since the phone's release and frankly, Google would be foolish to let them have another which is sad.
Although to be fair, Verizon isn't the only party to blame here. Google allowed all of this to begin with.
<Discussion of rooting and hacking of any device is not permitted on the forum per the Verizon Wireless Terms of Service.>
Unfortunately it will never come from Verizon. They EOL'd (End of Line) the Galaxy Nexus (the Verizon version). This means that Verizon will no longer be doing anything about it.
They have updated phones after EOL before, just today the Thunderbolt got ICS for example. My Droid 1 had at least 2 updates after eol that I remember. End of life usually means just end of them selling it. If they have discontinued updating it they better release back to Google to update it then, because Google will update for at least anther year or two more.
Even the original DROID Incredible is scheduled to get a minor update this month too. Its update pages were updated shortly after the Tbolt's update was announced.
I've been following the clamor over the update for some time. On the realistic front......I can't MAKE Verizon do it now however I am a bit frustrated because there is no explanation as to why. I can concur with Starkiller that one of the pitch points for the galaxy nexus was how it would update directly from Google and thus bypass a lot of time delay in carriers pushing updates. Since Google was directly involved it would be a phone that had a longer life to it and someone immune to changing phone model lines for the sake of sales.
I can agree with re4ee's comments also that perhaps they are taking more time to see how it is working in real-time for customers from other carriers. Let them suffer the bugs and ensure that Verizon doesn't follow suit. I know that Verizon received a lot of problem calls with it when it first came out I am sure that they don't want to do that again. Samsung was useless to assist. But in that regard it is only speculation. Without some open communication to the customer it makes it rather frustrating and without answers.
I do know that during my original introduction to using my galaxy nexus that there were problems with it and in just a simple principle that I stayed with was they toted it as the best for the uses you require....I paid the price and was told it performed at a certain level so that means that my expectation is that it does exactly what it was toted to do. Offering excuses that it was Samsung's fault or that it is just the way it is when you have a new line of phone is not an acceptable answer. It is skirting responsibility and it is false advertising as it did not perform as stated. I've worked out those bugs but I still expect a high level of service and customer care. Just say it like it is and give the bottom line....not excuses, I could handle that a lot easier. I am not saying that it is at that level yet because I have not been given any factual information however if it cannot perform as intended then just for integrity's sake of the company and customer loyalty provide everyone who has one with the offer of a phone of the same original retail value paid for it and same expectation of quality presented by Verizon as an optional choice. That would engender customer trust.
In the meantime though I expect something to happen.
If "waiting for updates" is part of the "User Experience" then Verizon has finally figured out how to exceed customer expectations.
4.2.2 update will start to roll out today

Let's hope it works well after all the waiting and screaming. I'll put my trust in Verizon. I really believe they waited untill all the bugs were taken care of. I'm a very happy FIOS subscriber and I want to keep my cell with them.
