Re: Android 2.1 Updates for Droid and Eris

This is a verizon Blog site is it not.

Do you not think that Verizon should somewhere in this blog, answer some of the questions we all have regarding the 2.1 updates that are going around. Why so secrative? It is so childish for the company to just allow all the speculation to go around from all the people as well as many of the professional Tech magazines and Blogs and websites... you name it, and not come out with any statement to assist their customers? Makes absolutly no sense.

I have not seen one blog answer or assistance from one member of a verizon rep on any site. let alone this site , which is theirs.

by not giving out information is actually better than stating a time line of what is currently happening.

the minute they announce that they are close to completing testing of the new 2.1 update or give a date of a potential release, all heck would break loose if that date comes and goes with no update.

Verizon has to test, test, and re-test the 2.1 update to make sure they give us the best possible product. in doing so, i figure that if a problem arises then they have to go back to Motorola/Google and have certain things fixed. by doing so, this will prolong the release date more and more until everything is fine.

there is no way Verizon can forsee all the problems associated with the 2.1 and it's compatibility with the Droid/Eris to give that definate date of release.

but answer this, would you ever post here again after the 2.1 update and discover that somethings dont work or force closes your phone and complain about it?

you would, just like a lot of people would. this is what can be avoided by having Verizon throughly test the 2.1.

I am not saying they have to give a specific date and or time...but it would be nice if they actually acknowleged they were working on it?

I am not certain, but aside from Motorolla stating they have given the ROM to Verizon to do what they may, there has been nothing at all.

And complain.... I am sorry but there is nothing but complaints on most of this and most other blogs I have read. I am not a complainer, just like to make sure my Company is keeping my purchase up to date with the new stuff on the market. When I purchased the Droid I was advised it would be one that gets updates to keep it current with what is out there...Just protecting my investment, just like most.

And after all teh time it has taken, this update better be pure silk!

Actually Verizon is doing things the hard way. I manage a software development group and we release products simultaneously in 17 languages on schedule as we planned months ahead of time. Test and debug is important and is planned for. Final testing of a release candidate is always supported by a host a of beta testers and goes quite fast. By the time a product gets to that stage there should be low risk of a show stopped. I would hope that HTC delivers a release to Verizon in a well tested state, after all , they built the hardware. The only thing that should delay it would be Verizon crippling the features they don't want the customer to have and branding things.

It is a little more complicated than releasing a software product for a PC. Do you remember the fiasco with Windows when Vista was coming out. The announced date got pushed back several times and when it finally did come out it did not have all the features they said were coming. This is more like that. When 2.1 dropped into the SDK Motorola got to work on it to build it to their phone. Probably that happened pretty quickly but then there were problems with 2.1 on the N1 possibly the same problems existed. So they waited till Google had a solution then worked on that. Maybe it worked maybe it didn't. Maybe they are waiting on another update or maybe they were working on fixing the problem themselves (doubtful).

Also releasing an OS for phones is a lot different than releasing one for computers. Consider the sheer volume issue. An OS on a computer can take up 1.5 Gig or more these days even Linux takes up ridiculous amounts of space. The OS for the phone has to take up less than 256mb in order to leave 256mb for apps. That being the case specific hardware has to be supported by the manufacturers not by Google as an OS that would cover all the equipment support would be way too big unless or until off Rom app loading is supported. Which at this point it is not. Also when you consider that 2.1 dropped into the SDK in January it really hasn't been that long considering all the development and testing that has to be done by the manufacturer and the carrier. Also the carrier does have to go through and make sure the update doesn't make changes that affect their service. For instance if part of the update Motorola decided to change all the phones compression. Well some phones wouldn't pick up a signal others would be outstanding but would be taxing the system at a higher rate or it could be changed to where all of the Droids which are on the Verizon network in tremendous numbers could be set to use ridiculous bandwidth. Basically the manufacturer has to make adjustments at a system level and the carrier has to make sure those changes don't interfere or put undue strain on their system.

So it can be complicated and more complicated than software development.

I believe it doesn't need to be said that they are working on it. And, take into consideration how large Verizon Wireless actually is. Just because it's a big deal to us, in scale and comparison to the benefit of a whole company it really looks tiny. I understand your concern, however testing and releasing an update that gives not only great features but a huge UI overhaul takes more than just a few people to test. It takes time.

Whether if Verizon is fixing it for their network, bloating it with their own Apps, whatever -- they are working on it. And aside from that, announcing:

Verizon: Hey folks we're not working on the update now!

Customers: WTH WHY ARENT YOU I PAID GOOD MONEY FOR THIS.

Verizon: Hey folks we're testing out the update now and we'll get back to you ASAP.

Customers: Lol how hard can udpating a phone be??????????1!1111shift+1111 Why don't we have it yet? How long is "Asap?" I expect this update to be given in about one week or else!!!!!

The aforementioned shows that if they admit that they aren't focusing on the update that most people will start a riot. The latter only shows the impatience that most people on these forums have.

And besides if you really wanted an clue on how Verizon is working on the updates then I would just suggest keep browsing your regular tech sites (Engadget/Gizmodo/Phandroid/Androidandme/AndroidGuys) as they will have information faster than this site (See: The Touch Pro 2 Update threads).

New to Droid, Smartphones and this board - but happy with my purchase. I was ticked at ATT for jacking up my bill for over a year, so I cancelled their service, went out and bought a plastic 9.99 phone and held out past the iPhone (ATT = nope). But I did get the iTouch as a compromise.

After all this time and all the $$ I saved on a plastic phone (lol) - I broke down and figured I'd give it a try, went in to simply look at the iPhone (possibly cave after all these years) and what else was there and was lucky enough to have two phone teckies working to help me out. Once they handed me the Droid I was a goner.

Ironically, the same day there was an offer for the upcoming ATT version of the new Droid coming out this Thursday? It has a bigger keyboard, flush and the camera lens is on the inside of the keyboard without the toggle piece on the keyboard. It was similar to the Clique's shape they said. Another thing the Droid guy said was that this phone has the advanced Google GPS included and the new one coming out will be extra (and not as good? - not all that saavy in the area, just learnig)

Matter not ---- I felt the current one was best for me. ..Puurrr

They did mention some update as I walked out the door....and Lo' and behold, could this be it? lol

Now I see all these comments and wonder how long they have been announcing this. One of the phone techies was pretty hot and saavy on the Droid and would have held back mentioning it if he knew it was an anticlimax or some delay or ED (lol - figure it out). So how long have they been mentioning this, eh? Is there a problem with the Droid for a non-tethering kitten type?

Any helpful words of wisdom?

First, I just want to say I enjoy reading your posts. With your knowledge and understanding, I get the feeling you're an employee.

I just have a question and need some of your wonderful feedback because I'm not understanding what you are saying. Since I'm not good at expressing myself, please forgive how I ask this. Allow me to just bare my thoughts in the form of brainstorming.

I am gathering due to the size of VZW, the quickness of the release of updates gets delayed even though the Droid has been (with millions of VZW dollars) marketed as the one phone to break the matrix and usher in a new era of openness for VZW's customers. So within the scope of things, this just is a small matter and people need to be patient and wait on Big Red until the company is ready to communicate with the people that keep it alive. Even though the number of Droids sold are huge, these customers are still a small part of the customer base and they need to remember that. Big Red really should not communicate with it's customers because it's are not understanding. It's customers are overdemanding and never are reasonable.
