Cannot receive text messages from AT&T customers.

I have been a Verizon customer for years. I recently upgraded from a Treo 650 to a Droid. I am unable to receive text messages sent to me by my friends with AT&T iphones. I can text them and the message goes through, but if they send one to me it never arrives. It is interesting that they can attach a picture and the message (now MMS, I guess) will get through to me. I do receive text messages from Verizon customers with no problem.

This has been an ongoing problem for many years, but until I had the Droid, I was not doing much texting. I am fairly certain that it is not a problem with AT&T since these same friends can send texts to other verizon customers and they go through without delay.

I sincerely hope that someone can provide some insight and tell me how to proceed.

Wow. I just did a spell check and the program did not recognize "droid", "iphone", "MMS", or "texting". Ironic.

My son also has the same problem..... he can call and send texts to 3 of his AT&T friends, but they cannot call or text back - he has a ENV touch. There are no blocks - I spent 1 hour on the phone with verizon but got disconnected and they never called back. BTW, those same people can respond and call my phone - a rogue.

Thanks for the response pjc11801. It is good to know that I am not the only one with this problem, but not so good to hear that an hour on the phone with Verizon did nothing for you. It is very frustrating.

I too, am having this problem. My sister has an enV and she can receive texts from at&t just fine but I cannot with a htc ozone.

Wow. My phone is having a problem similar to this. But more like the opposite in a way as well. I can't send messages to anybody who isn't on Verizon. This started like a couple days ago. I can receive messages from non-Verizon customers, but if I reply, they never get my message. I have tried this with all the other networks. The only I can send a receive texts from is Verizon. I don't know why. Any help?

Same thing here, I have a friend on AT&T who has multiple friends including myself with Verizon who can receive texts from but can't send texts to. Would be nice if this was resolved but I'm not holding my breath.

Even people on the AT&T Forums complain of how they have troubles messaging with Verizon customers. I've seen it for months or maybe even a years now. I wonder when it'll get fixed?

Glad that I'm not the only one who having the same problems, i sent messages to AT&T customers only a couple message get through and it very frustrating when you are having a important conversation. I thought it was my phone at first, but this is my second Droid, the first one keep freezing and shutting down for no reason on me, and I am still currently have problems with texting not getting through!!!

and P.S look like VZW is good at taking your money but nothing is getting done.

this is totally crap. Me and my boyfriend are sick of this crap. i have verzion and he has Cingular and only get to see each other on weekends and we love to text...... 4-5 weeks ago it just became **bleep** is wrong for texting

looks like both companys are doing this on purpose because they give u **bleep** ways fix this. Its them because this lame law suit and they are completing with each other

My sister had the same problem. She found out that ATT had given out the same phone number to a prepaid phone so she couldn't receive texts from ATT users. When ATT cleared the mistake she's never had a problem since.

I hate that Verizon can send ATT users a text over 160 characters. ATT to ATT appears to be unlimited. I have a Iphone also and I receive text that are 4-500 characters long from other ATT users with no problems. Verizon sucks with this limit. I am constantly having people retype the last part of a text because if gets left off. This is one reason I'll wont change to a DROID or any other Verizon cell phone product.

Same problem here with a Storm and a Droid. It worked with the LG Venus, and quit when I got the Droid. It's very frustrating. My whole family is a bunch of iphone converts and we're the last hold out. Looks like we may have to convert to solve the problem.

My friend had the same problem. He is a verizon user and could never receive texts from Iphone users. He could send them no problem. Iphone users could send him picture messages with text no problem.

Please have patience with this, as is was hard for the people to figure it out. What they did was check the logs of text messages to that Verzion number in their system. They did not see any record of the texts leaving my iphone, which is odd. The had me reset my phone, clear contacts with his numbers, etc. Nothing worked. I read to the tech support person what I read on one of the online help forums, and she then asked her boss about it. They checked their ATT text message database, something called MIND or MINE, and they found a record of his phone number in that DB. They submitted a request to have it deleted, and that took a couple of days to complete. The form itself took the tech support a while to fill out. Keep in mind he never moved his phone from ATT to Verizon, but apparently ATT owned the number at one time. To find out if this is your problem, you will need to call ATT and have them transfer you to tech support, the first level support will not be able to help you. But you might have to go through them the first time. It will also help to have one of your friends with an IPhone do the calling, as it be easier for ATT to help them.

I'm having a similar problem, and it's extremely frustrating. I have no idea how to fix it. I cannot send or receive any messages to or from AT&T Users. I think it's only AT&T, because I can still talk to some of my friends that have Sprint. It's really frustrating, and I really hope this gets fixed soon, as about half of my contacts are AT&T and I can't text them. The strange thing though, is that when my AT&T friends and I are in close proximity, like at school, I can send messages to them, and receive their messages.

After a bit of a hassle, my problem is finally solved. The first 2 VZW reps I contacted about this, simply blamed the problem on AT&T's network. I finally got lucky and a nicer/smarter person answered the phone. She actually researched my problem and took the number of one of my AT&T contacts (to trace the problem I guess). At any rate, 2 weeks after creating a trouble ticket, they fixed the problem. Now I am able to send/receive text messages from AT&T subscribers. My advice for future readers who still have this problem, is to just contact Verizon customer service again and have them open a trouble ticket. It seems they're turning over a new leaf in customer service.

i have some question i went over my texts by about 200 i have the 500 a month plan i was wondering how much money this will cost...also does it cost money to just recieve a text? one more question does it cost money to text a person with an ipod touch...thankss

I don't know the charge for overages. I know without any plan it is 20c a message so $40 add'l . If 15c a msg, then $30 or $20 if 10c a message. You could call and ask to upgrade to the next level of texting, however you MUST ask that the charge be backdated so to cover the overage.

It does not cost any add'l to text an ipod unless like now, you are over your limit.

Texts over your allowance are billed at $.10 each, sent and received (if you are on a texting bundle plan; the 500 for $10 qualifies for that). For $5 more, you can bump up to the $15/mo, 1500 text allowance plan, and as budone said, BACKDATE it to the first of the billing cycle to cover your overage; it will be less than the $20 you pay in overages, and you can always take it off next month.

Texting to an ipod touch, or IM, or any other means of texting all counts as text, yes. Sent and received messages both count towards your allowance.

I think I may do the same. Recently just started messaging my AT&T friend. She doesn't get any of my picture or text messages. That's from my verizon phone. Although I message on my other T-mobile phone and she doesn't get that either. I wonder if something is wrong with her phone instead.

Question for those of you that are having problems receiving texts from AT & T. Did you have your phone number ported over from another company? I had the same problem and sent a message via customer service about it. I received a call from verizon that stated they were going to make a troubleshooting ticket on it. After a couple days I received a test message that was sent from a at&t phone. Turns out my phone was still listed as a sprint number and for some reason this was messing everything up. Needless to say it is corrected and I know receive all of my texts including AT&T customers.

Customer Service number : 18009220204 - IF you did port your number maybe mention that you did and ask to see if they could look into your number and see if it is listed under the old company. Also, I have been a verizon customer for over 4 years so apparently my number was listed as a sprint number this whole time......

I had my second call with a Verizon tech this AM. I cannot get texts from anyone not with Verizon. After 2 calls and almost 2 hours, they have opened a trouble ticket. We didn't know we weren't getting texts from others at first. Now we have tested and have confirmed we are not receiving texts from AT&T and Sprint. Two friends with US Cellular also tried to text me and both received a message - unable to send.

When I first called, the tech spent 45 minutes checking things only to tell me that it was Sprint's problem. That's when I later tested with someone on AT&T and figured out we aren't getting those texts either.

We'll see what happens from the trouble ticket and how long that takes. Wanted to post that this happened to me with other carriers besides AT&T.

I just switched to a Motorola Devour. When I first activate the phone, I get all texts from all carriers. Then the next day or so I can only send, but not receive texts from AT&T customers. When I reset the phone, it works again, but I never know when I'm not receiving them until I talk to someone who sent one I didn't receive, and then have to reset again.

Verizon customer service had no answers and didn't offer to open a ticket or investigate further.

I'd love to help you with your messaging issue vjacobs! Does dialing *228 option 1 affect the performance at all? Are you using a 3rd-party messaging app? Also, is the issue consistent once it develops or intermittent?

Since posting this message, I did a system update, the phone restarted, and I have not had the problem since. But when it was happening, it was consistent.

I've had this problem for a while too. Can't receive texts from AT&T customers, so far all of the problem numbers have been iPhones. This has happened for my last three phones. I figured it might stop when I upgraded to a smartphone, but I just got the iphone 5 and have the same problem. Did anyone ever find a method to fix this?
