Update 4.1.2 deleting large blocks of text following backspace correction

OK, this is a difficult for me to explain, but here goes nothing. I have been having an issue since the update. When typing a message, when I backspace to correct a wrong word/spelling, and then select the correct word from the predictive text bar, most of my message gets erased and replaced with the one word I selected. Even weirder, the word gets inserted in between the few characters of remaining text. The first couple times it happened, I thought I had accidentally selected the block of text with my cursor, but that was not the case. The text is not selected, but acts as though it is and gets overwritten/deleted. This is happening in Messaging and Gmail (and I am assuming all other typing applications).

Is anyone else having this issue? It is making me wan to throw my phone out the window! Please let me know if you know a fix for this.

Mine is doing the same thing! I got the update last night and it is deleting practically my entire message when I backspace. Also, the puncuation options do not pop up anymore like they used to at the top of the keyboard unless you hit space and then backspace.

I'm right there with you...I want to throw this thing out the window. I've seen some cool things this update did, but things I hardly ever would use. The fact it messed with my texting (something I do a lot) has really pissed me off.

I'm sorry to hear you are having the same problem! I will let you know if I discover a fix for it; please let me know if you find a solution. I can't believe more people aren't complaining about this; it is so frustrating!

Yes, I've had this problem as well. First time I had re-type a message 3X. Seems if there's a misspelled word that involves a predictive text, a back space will delete a whole or two of text. For now, just have to be careful not to hit the backspace & use caution when "correcting" misspells.

I came on here to see if there's an official way to report bugs, but haven't found it yet. If anyone finds that or a solution, I'm glad to hear(read) it!

Although I only have a Galaxy Stellar, the OS Updates have caused more problems that all other Verizon products I've owned--combined. (And that's saying something.) Screen wont respond, phone wont turn on, phone wont recognize SIM card or connect to Verizon networks automatically, etc.

I'll have faith that Verizon is actively searching for a resolution.

I thought I was the only one and that I hit the wrong button, but it keeps happening. Large text messages and long emails have been erased! Overall whenever I type anything it's just extremely sluggish hope it gets fixed soon.

Same here OP, I hate it. worse than ever before. I KNEW better then to download the update. Whenever they say something is better...WRONG, it's worse. And really, who cares about taking a picture when on a call?? How often that gonna happen, I'd rather have the Texting back to what it was and loose the pic/call option. Argh,. hope they fix this crap fast. Really the first issue I have had with this phone.

Same Issue here, everytime i have a misspelled word and choose the correct spelling, most of the message if not hte entire thing gets deleted -- so frustrated!

VERIZON....This update SUCKS, Fix it, will a Verizon Rep please come to this thread and advise, this Update sucks and needs to be addressed immediately. I have had NO issues with this phone till now. I will post on this thread every day all day till we get answers.

I have this exact same problem. I thought the sensitivity of my screen was causing it, but it happens too often to be the screen. It's a real problem when you've typed multiple sentences of text, to only have it lost with no way of recovery. Additionally, the new predictive text system tries to learn from your linked accounts, rather than the phone and they changed the keyboard setting. Also, it automatically inserts a space after a punctuation, with no way to turn that off in the settings. Horrible update IMO.

There are VZW employees that roam this community, but their participation in any particular discussion isn't guaranteed nor is it immediate. It might take a week or so before they could post in a discussion. This is to give the community members/customers a chance to respond to the posts.

The keyboard predictions and settings are from a third party applications that has been added as default to the phone. It is called SwiftKey keyboard and what you are describing is that keyboard default behavior.

That's great community Leader, an I understand that, but this Issue isn't a community fix so to speak, it's a verizon/sammy/swift key or whomever fix and it needs to be addressed cuz it SUCKS. Worst update ever, and I know cuz I switched back to Verizon from Sprint recently for this phone and 4G. And their HTC EVO 4G updates were horrible, but this one , is the worst, I text a lot and I lose over half of my texts trying to correct a word or delete a word. SO maybe as a CL you can Hail a VZW Rep? Hehe. OR are you only a CL cuz you have so many posts.

You can change the settings so as not to "learn" for your other accounts... Settings>Language and keyboard> under default, the samsung keyboard is greyed out, click on the settings icon next to that>predictive text>uncheck the Personalized data box. Or you can leave it checked and then choose the options under that, each one has a sign in or update requirement, aldo you can clear any data learned. Hth, any Qs reply to this.

Also, under the Samsung keyboard settings is Advanced>Auto Punctuate. Check or uncheck,

If you want Samsung to fix it, then you should contact Samsung. Complaining about it on customer forum is like spinning your wheels in a puddle of mud.

Same problem too. I contacted Samsung and they said oh, we don't know of any issue. I said it happened with your update. So PLEASE go to Samsung.com and start complaining. I used the contact us page, get support and chatted live. I told them the upgrade sucks.

I am currently on LIVE chat with Samsung...Pfffttt. talking about clearing cache and what not..That is NOT the issue, the update is the issue. Argh

FURTHER UPDATE: Wanted me to do a factory reset>>>> NOT. Another Dead end, Reminds me of the Sprint HTC days, that I left and came to Verizon to get away from. If we don't know how to fix it...Factory Reset. Gawd.

Contacted Samsung Support...same as everyone else..clear cache, factory reset..blah blah...nothing...Maybe if enough people contact them they will contact Verizon...who knows...good luck everyone

I contacted them yet again. Told me to factory reset. Still same problem. So I contacted them yet again. Do the factory reset this way and let us know if you have the problem. I said the problem isn't with the phone, its with the update. I said it's your keyboard update that ***** up. I had no problem till I did that.

Yesterday I went to the Verizon store and they said they hadn't seen the problem. They erased my phone and I am still in process of setting it all up again. And guess what, problem still there. Based on this thread, I contacted Samsung today and received the SAME reply - no known problem. I told them about this thread and said people here have said they contacted you so how could there be "no known problem". They said to go to http://www.samsung.com/us/support/contact

and enter an email complaint towards bottom of screen. I did that so we'll see if I get even acknowledgement. In meantime they stabbed at erasing this and clearing that... but I put my foot down when they were going to wipe my phone again.

I called Verizon back today and they are willing to replace the phone but I'm not convinced that's the issue (and then I'd have to re-setup the phone once again!) The person I spoke to said that she uses a different keyboard - Jelly Bean keyboard. I have downloaded the jelly bean keyboard and so far I haven't had the problem (not sure if I just haven't hit the right combination?) I like the keyboard, so I'm suggesting this in case anyone else is interested in trying it. So far it works for me but I will update this if I find I still have the problem.

Thanks for the info, just downloaded the Jelly bean keyboard. Looks good so far, been playing with it tryin to create the issue. Sad that we have to use a 3rd party app to make this phone work like it did before this update. I SO knew better, I said to myself, "self, wait awhile to see how this update is and read up on it" but Nooooo....Kicks self ...

Pretty SAD that Samsung/Verizon is tellin us no known issues (sounds like a Sprint move) when I am pretty sure that the phones that received the update are having the same issue. I refused to Factory Reset my phone as I wasn't about to start over and I KNEW it was the software update to 4.1.2 with out a doubt. No issues of this nature minutes before I updated. Also, the punctuation bar is gone. ARGH. Getting a new phone won't help, (unless you are lucky enuf to get ir with the 4.1.1 software) Hmmmm.

Ok, after installing the Jelly Bean Keyboard and playing with the settings I can't find if it has the "swype" option. However, while in the settings of the phone, I found that this phone has a built in "Swype" keyboard option which is different the Samsung Keyboard. Settings>>Language and Input>>Default.. Then highlight the Swype option and then you have a new keyboard, so far I have not been able to replicate the issue with deleting text. So we don't have to download the JB keyboard if you don't want to. Still testing

I'm glad the swype default is working for you. Samsung had me try that but I did not like the swype keyboard at all - personal preference! I prefer the jelly bean keyboard and so far it seems to be working for me - again, still testing too

I'm also having this same problem. Extremely frustrating! A few friends of mine are field engineers with Samsung. I've made them aware of the issue and asked them to forward it ASAP to the dev team. I haven't tried the Jellybean keyboard yet, but will do so soon and then report back with my results. Even if it does suffice as a fix though, this sort of thing should not happen. Samsung employs hundreds of people specifically to test for, identify, and prevent problems like this from reaching consumer devices. Somebody just got lazy and copy/pasted "PASS" too many times haha. There's no way this could have been missed if the update underwent any kind of user experience QA before release.

For me I'd say I see it most commonly when using Facebook, but then again, this is my most heavily used app since I'm out of the US right now and it's my main line of communication. So I haven't been using SMS at all. I've also experienced it once or twice using Google Talk. The more info the better. I'm also looking into how to capture logs from the device to send those along to Samsung.

It occurs anytime the Samsung default keyboard is used, Emails, Texting, FB, Etc...not getting it on the built in "swype" keyboard or the JB keyboard. We shouldn't have to install a 3rd party App to allow this phone to work properly. This should have been known/trouble shot before the release as you stated in your previous reply. Thanks for the good info.

I tried downloading the Jelly Bean keyboard, but couldn't live without swype like on the Samsung keyboard, so I switched to the Swype keyboard as my default for now. I do not find it to be very intuitive, but at least it is not deleting my text.

If someone hasn't already mentioned, this is a peer to peer customer forum where customers can give suggestions and advice to other customers with their questions. There are VZW employees who occasionally roam the community and respond to posts, but it isn't guaranteed nor is it immediate that they would respond to your post. It can be a week or so before they might reply.

Your post is marked as a unanswered question, so that definitely helps with your chances of getting a response from a VZW employee. Again it isn't guaranteed.

Verizon or Samsung won't reply , they don't even acknowledge that there is a problem...Sprint-esque...

Anyway, I actually find the Swype keyboard working very well, check you settings to make sure it has the preferences marked for predictive, auto cap and auto spacing, etc...

So, after read all the stories here, I contacted Samsung as well. (Basically because of all the "FUN" we've had at Verizon and their lack of support with my husband's phone.) However, they did run me through the gamut of clearing the cache, soft resetting the phone, etc. I did however, REFUSE to factory reset the phone letting them know that they need to come up with another software update, as they are FULLY aware by now of the keyboard issue between Verizon and Samsung and I'm not going to reinstall all of my apps due to their incompetence.

The tech basically told me I needed to go back to Verizon and they would have to help me. They said because, "the update was released through Over the Air update by your carrier support team, it clearly seems that the issue has been occurred on your phone after updating the device. I should inform you that, Over the Air update will be send only through carrier support team. So, if you contact Verizon Support team, they would be able to send you an another update to fix this issue." (Taken directly from my chat.)

Needless to say, I still have the same issue and will be downloading the 3rd party app reference above to fix my issue. Yay! :-/ Thank you to all of you that have posted previously helping those of us who have waited too long with our frustrations.

Ok, I might be loosing my mind, but I went back to the Samsung keyboard and played with it a lil bit,(a friend has same phone and said they don't use predictive text, and has not had any issues, which I found to be the case)but it seems that with the predictive text on, it seems to be working now?!?! I think, I haven't been able to recreate the loosing text issue right now. Will keep trying, has anyone seen that theirs is working now? And if so, How is that, no new update.

My wife and I are experiencing the same issue. Go to make a simple correction and the whole message is gone. Yes, this must be resolved soon. I will email Samsung myself as well. I wish I had had a choice about the update. It just came on one day. I was excited at first but this inconvenience makes it hardly worth it. Samsung, get it together!

FYI, I have the same issue and I am on Sprint, galaxy s3. So it's not a Verizon thing. Would appear to be a Samsung-Jelly Bean issue. Thanks for the suggestion about downloading a new keyboard app.

It's definitely a Software update not related to any carrier. The 4.1.2 update is the culprit, and it's junk.

I'm really stunned that this conversation has gone on so long with the new battery life issue since the last update. I'm sure there are more important issues than the keyboard.

I hear you. But I suspect you haven't randomly lost 2-3 minutes of typing in one key stroke. It is pretty frustrating. Maybe if I was a faster Android typist ;-)

Having the same problem. Funny thing is, the phone only seems to do it when it's a longer message. I've used the correct feature in many 1-2 liner texts and it works, well...the way it should.

That said, I've had the phone a total of four days and I'm almost ready to return it at this point. Somewhat glad to see it's a software issue—hopefully they fix it.

I'm honestly dumbfounded that more people aren't complaining about this. As soon as the 4.1.2 update completed, auto correct broke on text messages, native email, Good for Enterprise email and basically anything else that let's you enter text with the Samsung Keyboard.

Typical Verizon though. Takes them 100% longer to release firmware updates for their phones and when they finally release one, it is extremely buggy. Still baffled this didn't get caught in QA or in any soak testing. BIG problem.

BTW, I did factory reset my phone and it didn't fix anything. Shocker....

I have this typing, text deleting problem since the pushed over the air update about 3 weeks ago. Before that, my gs3 was perfect. I've done everything upto and including a factory reset and getting a replacement phone and it still happens. Verizon told me this is a known problem and a software fix is planned for release in early june. In the mean time, verizon said to use the swipe keyboard instead of the default samsung keyboard that I was using and see if it continues. I don't like the swipe keyboard. Other than that, good luck to everyone with this very annoying problem that is not our fault. Verizon fix this already!

Found a potential fix!

It looks like it replaces the Samsung keyboard with the Swype keyboard, but all seems to be working just fine so far (ie. not deleting large blocks of text when you go back to autocorrect a previously misspelled word.) (BTW, you don't have to use the swype motion, you can still type regularly with this keyboard too)

Follow these instructions:

1. First open settings.

2. Then open application manager.

3. Swipe left twice so you are on the all tab.

4. Find the app called Samsung Keyboard and click it.

5. Click clear data and push OK.

This worked for me. Let me know if it works for you!

This actually worked for whatever reason. Please keep in mind, I did a

factory reset (battery issue) and after the reset there was the same auto

correct issue. But doing this just fixed it! Good luck everyone else!

Deleting text was happening to me. Did factory reset and even got a replacement phone and still happened. I changed from using the default keyboard to a free app keyboard SwiftKey I think. Phone is fine now. Hope it helps.

The same thing is happening to my Galaxy SIII. So annoying! Now I am not receiving my sms text messages. I can't log into my bank account, because it uses this as a security verification. Help with any of these would be appreciated.

Mine does the same thing. Thought it was something I did. Looking into downloading a different keyboard to see if that helps.
