Data usage for phone calls

About a couple of months ago I installed an app called Onavo that can track data usage for each service or app running on your phone. One of the apps/services that has surprised me with the amount of data usage is the Phone service. For example this month it is reporting that the Phone service has used 386MB of data. Why is it that the phone service is using so much data? I thought the voice was voice and did not run over the data network. Or what is it about the Phone service that is using so much data?

Thanks for the post! It's a great idea to monitor your data usage! Your actual phone calls will not take away from your monthly allowance. Do you check your usage by dialing #DATA, or on My Verizon? That would be the best way to monitor the usage that is taken from your allowance. Let us know if you need anything else!

Could it be the data files for voice mail?

Everything is data. It's all digital so it's all data. Analog voice was killed off nearly a decade ago. Why do you care how much data the phone uses when voice data is unlimited? Unless you're using something like Google Voice then that's not on Verizon? Besides 386 MB would be at least 2200 minutes used so I think you're app is off. If it was VoLTE I might understand that number.

Onava is meant to measure real data, i.e. stuff used in a data plan, not voice. It's got some good reviews so I really doubt if for everyone is it also measuring 2G call/text data! So, the OP wants to know what can be generating this apparent usage.
